At ed schools, a low degree of difficulty | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute

At ed schools, a low degree of difficulty | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute | Thinking Common Core | Scoop.it
Twelve years ago, my wife and I went back to school. Not the same one, though: she went to medical school and I went to education school. I don’t think I’ll shock even the gentlest reader by asserting that the former was harder than the latter, but I would like to offer a glimpse of how differently rigorous they were. Here’s a reconstruction of a typical conversation from our school days: Me: “How was school, dear?” Wife: “I have to master the circulatory system by Monday or repeat the entire year. How was school, dear?”
Catherine Schmidt's insight:
We know the quality of the teacher is the most important factor in student success. How does this translate to commitments in education policy?

Catherine Schmidt's insight:

Teachers may be interested in the high-quality mini assessments found on Achieve the Core in both ELA and Math. The ELA assessment questions, often with  non-fiction and fiction selections for grades 3-11, feature a student reading passage, text complexity analysis and questions and answer annotations. This is yet another quality resource housed here as we move to CCSS-aligned instruction and assessment.

My Common-Core Classroom

My Common-Core Classroom | Thinking Common Core | Scoop.it
We have all heard Common Core bashing. Statements like the Common Core will "undermine student individuality, teacher autonomy, and mark a dangerous takeover of local control." Unlike many of the Core-bashing voices, I am a classroom teacher with actual experience teaching with Common Core, and I beg to differ.

Catherine Schmidt's insight:
"This tool was created to help teachers plan a Common Core-aligned lesson. By responding to a series of prompts about the lesson content, structure, and activities, teachers are guided through the development of a new lesson or the review of an existing lesson in a way that ensures that the Shifts required by the CCSS are at the center." "The tool is still in the beta phase. Please try it out and share your feedback to help improve the tool for you and your colleagues.?
