Edtech’s Next Big Disruption Is The College Degree

Edtech’s Next Big Disruption Is The College Degree | Thinking About It | Scoop.it
By 2020, the traditional degree will have made room on its pedestal for a new array of modern credentials that are currently gaining mainstream traction as viable measures of learning, ability and accomplishment.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Think of higher education as a glacier. It moves slowly and grinds fine.  This glacier is now calving.  Microcredentials, nanodegrees, competency based programs are a response to a growing demand for work relevant learning.

It's time to get over thinking of education as a 4 or 6 year degree track.  The demands of RIGHT NOW will create lifelong learners.

"The future belongs to the educated" and education must be ongoing.

Are you Degree Worthy? MOOC-based master's degree initiative expands globally

Are you Degree Worthy? MOOC-based master's degree initiative expands globally | Thinking About It | Scoop.it
MOOC-based master's degree initiative expands to more than a dozen universities. Will learners opt to enroll or settle for a certificate?
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here's a grand experiment backed by some  name brand universities.  Will lowering the cost of a MIT masters degree attract applicants?  You bet.  Will the applicants we 'degree worthy'? There's the rub.

This model deserves a test. Those that complete the MOOC side of the training earn a certificate. Certificate holders  can then apply for a more traditional (and expensive) Masters degree that grants approximately 1/4 to 1/2 of the degree requirements based on the MOOC performance.

Don't expect everyone with a certificate to be admitted to the Masters program.  Unlike a traditional grad school application, the school will have a good idea of the capabilities and intellectual horsepower of the applicant.

Let's hope that MicroMasters are a way to help highly motivated and highly qualified learners earn a degree they could not otherwise afford.

For Free.

For everyone.

Simplistic? Yes, but it speaks to the heart of a lifelong learner.  For me the one thing we need to learn anything is the ability to ask questions.

Tips To Use Blended Learning In Corporate Training - eLearning Industry

Tips To Use Blended Learning In Corporate Training - eLearning Industry | Thinking About It | Scoop.it
Blended learning offers the best of both worlds. Not only do you benefit from the implementation of synchronous learning, but also you have the chance to benefit from “go at your own pace” techniques that are part of asynchronous learning. However, if you want to take full advantage of blended learning, it's a good idea to learn about the various blended learning models and how to utilize them.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Face to face training time is precious. Do you use it presenting the nuts and bolts of your training objectives or do you use it intensely applying the learning to the immediate needs of the job?  Blended learning solutions seek to leverage online delivery of fundamentals with the dynamics of face to face group work.  Is it right for your needs?

The mission of Gapminder Foundation is to fight devastating ignorance with a fact-based worldview that everyone can understand. We started the Ignorance Project to investigate what the public know and don’t know about basic global patterns and macro-trends. He is now a Professor of Global Health at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.  His ability to transform health data into a realistic global global vision (combined with a showman's dramatic timing) helps us all see more clearly.

Udacity's Sebastian Thrun, Godfather Of Free Online Education, Changes Course

Udacity's Sebastian Thrun, Godfather Of Free Online Education, Changes Course | Thinking About It | Scoop.it
Higher education is an enormous business in the United States—we spend approximately $400 billion annually on universities, a figure greater than the revenues of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter combined—and the Professor has no trouble rounding up a group of Silicon Valley's most prestigious investors to support his new project.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This is a blue sky big think about MOOCs (Massive online open courses).  I like the imagining part of this article.

Here's the idea that makes me think about it all:  "Imagine," an investor in the Professor's company says, "you can hand a kid in Africa a tablet and give him Harvard on a piece of glass!"

The article goes on to deal with the practical difficulties of offering free education online.

Seymour Papert's Mindstorms: Relevant, Thoughtful, an Essential Read for Educators

Seymour Papert's Mindstorms: Relevant, Thoughtful, an Essential Read for Educators | Thinking About It | Scoop.it
Mindstorms: Children, Computers and Powerful Ideas by Seymour Papert is a brilliant book. It’s as relevant today as it was when first published in 1980. Its applications to learning and teaching in 2013 are no less than startling. Mindstorms ranks in the top ten education books I’ve read. It describes not just how children develop intellectually, but frames the role that educational technology plays in teaching and learning.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I first read Mindstorms as a young teacher well before the turn of the century. Papert's ideas, and the embodiment of those ideas in the Logo programming language changed the way I teach and propelled me into the world of robotics.

Among the best experiences I've had teaching in public schools was the Mindstorms inspired Sumo Robot tournaments we had back at Kingsbury Middle School at Lake Tahoe.

It's fair to say that Papert is one of the Fathers of the modern day making culture (even if the steampunk kids don't know it).
