Why We Need To Talk About Failure | Daniel Melbye | Things charity | Scoop.it
By sharing our failures and our challenges we can create compelling stories filled with drama
Daniel Melbye's insight:

Don’t get me wrong. Talking about outcomes, about what we have achieved, are important (I write about this a lot), but our failures and setbacks are important parts of the story.

5 Ways that Social Media Impacts SEO

5 Ways that Social Media Impacts SEO | Things charity | Scoop.it

"How does social media activity impact SEO? That's a common question these days as publishers try to make the most of search and social for audience development.

While the role of social media signals in Google and Bing’s ranking algorithms is still evolving there are already a number of ways that social media is having a clear influence.

Here are five ways that social media impacts SEO, or more specifically search engine visibility, rankings and traffic:

1. Annotations in the Search Results

Both Google and Bing use social data to annotate select listings on their search engine results pages.

2. Personalized Rankings

In addition to annotations the engines also personalize the order of their search results based on a number of factors including social connections and activity.

3. Secondary Links

When it comes to ranking factors links are still much more important than social shares. A link from a quality, trusted site has considerably greater weight than a like, tweet or +1.

4. Highlighting Authors

In some instances Google is now highlighting author information in its search results.

5. AuthorRank

Beyond author markup in the search results, both Google and Bing are beginning to utilize the concept of AuthorRank in which trusted, popular authors may be given a boost in search and social media visibility".

Curate Brands, Issues and Stories with Informative Data Widgets Arranged in Visual Dashboards: Sparkwise

Curate Brands, Issues and Stories with Informative Data Widgets Arranged in Visual Dashboards: Sparkwise | Things charity | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Sparkwise is a new, open-source free web service which allows you to assemble and curate beautiful looking data-dashboards containing the most relevant info and data about a person, a company or an issue. You choose.

How does it work.

You simply connect your social accounts to Sparkwise and then you start to drag and configure the widget buttons representing different data types onto your page. For example you can drag a Twitter Fan Count widget and specify for which Twitter account you want that widget to display the data. There are widgets for just about anything from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Google Analytics statistical counters to any data, image or video coming from other sources. You can even type in your own data.

You can create as many dashboard/pages as you like, and publish only the one you want, while keeping control of which widhets and data everyone gets to see.

If you want to create visual engaging story-pages with lots of data to support your focus, this is really a great tool to explore.

Recommended.

New Social Content Discovery Platform: Ping.it

New Social Content Discovery Platform: Ping.it | Things charity | Scoop.it

Giuseppe Mauriello: I received an invitation some hours ago to join into closed beta test of Ping.it (formerly StormDriver).

It is a social content discovery platform that allows people to ping where they are in the Web right now, locate others in real time, and join them on any page.

From About Page:

"Ping.it offers a new way to discover interesting content in a social setting. Instead of leaving updates on social networks, just like notes on a fridge, simply share the experience of discovering content in real time, together. Don’t wait for people to tell you what they’re doing. Instead, take a look at Ping.it and join them on the spot!

With Ping.it you can see what pages others are visiting right now. You can also get pinged about the good stuff they find or ping your own discoveries.

Ping.it is all about the real-time aspect of the Web. Being aware of where your friends are online is one thing. Another is that you can instantly know what’s hot. In Ping.it you can see how many other users are interacting with a page, and if things get interesting you can get notified and join in the fun!

Every ping can be send to a specific topic – and all the people who follow it. This way you will immediately know if a new interesting page was pinged to any topic you follow. You can create your own topics, invite contributors, and together create useful scrapbooks of content. All topics have their own unique URL’s, so that you can share your best collaborations with the outside world.

We use cloud-enhanced browsing in order to let you enjoy your favorite content from within Ping.it. Instead of searching for stuff outside and then reporting on your findings through social networks..."

Try out it / request an invite here: http://ping.it

Photos Drive The Most Engagement on Facebook [INFOGRAPHIC] | Things charity | Scoop.it

According to a new infographic from global communications company M Booth and media measurement and analytics company Simply Measured, visual content is not only taking the online world by storm; it’s also driving engagement!

Here are some highlighted stats from the infographic that make the case:

On Facebook, videos are shared 12X more than links and text posts combined.
On Facebook, photos are liked 2X more than text updates.
42% of all Tumblr posts are photos. On YouTube, 100 million users are taking a social action on videos every week. Photo and video posts on Pinterest are referring more traffic than Twitter, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, and Google+.

5 (or 6?) Reasons Why Web Publishing is Changing

5 (or 6?) Reasons Why Web Publishing is Changing | Things charity | Scoop.it

Excellent summary by Richard MacManus, the founder of ReadWriteWeb, on some of the recent shifts that affect Web Publishing. He lists 5 reasons but I would add a 6th (which actually reconciles his 1 and 4): the shift of value from Creation to Curation.

As he points out, we're moving to more casual forms of publishing and at the same time are hungry for quality. As more and more people embrace curation as a form of expression, they're exactly doing that, using their own particular expertise to identify relevant quality content and publishing more easily than through writing a long blog post.
