Andrew McLaughin's insight:

This concept was very interesting to me. It is amazing to imagine the new technology that is being developed and what it could do to change the every day lives of consumers, and the business practices of major corporations. Would this be a bad thing? Would it change the way people treated their personal electronics?

Closing the Loop on Electronic Waste

Closing the Loop on Electronic Waste | TheSecretLifeOfHeadphones | Scoop.it
Best Buy's in-store drop-off program has made the consumer electronics retailer one of the largest e-waste collectors in the nation.

Andrew McLaughin's insight:

After reading this article I was able to realize that there is an alternative to throwing out headphones when they break. Although I assumed there were options to recycle broken/used electronics, this opened my eyes to just how many options there are.

Say goodbye to knotted earbud cords for $10

Say goodbye to knotted earbud cords for $10 | TheSecretLifeOfHeadphones | Scoop.it
Earbud headphones are great to take everywhere you go, but getting them untangled for use tends to be a frustrating experience.

Via Efraim Silver
Andrew McLaughin's insight:

This article lent a great deal of insight to my topic. I think that if more people invested in this product they might be able to keep their headphones for longer periods of time. However, for this to be the case, the consumer must, first, value their belongings more than they do now. If this were the case these headphones could potentially move out of the realm of predisposed garbage.

Visual Loop - Consumerism Stats

Visual Loop - Consumerism Stats | TheSecretLifeOfHeadphones | Scoop.it

When we look up at the numbers behind the impact of everyday pleasures and think about the ongoing debate about climate change and the all the other environmental impacts caused by that lifestyle, one thing gets clear: we need to change.
Take a look at some of the numbers we’re bringing you here, and think about it.
Or better yet, act upon it.

Via Lauren Moss
Andrew McLaughin's insight:

When considering this topic it is important to spend time thinking about the overarching issue of waste and consumerism. The infographic points out the issue with plastic production and waste. These products, oftentimes, are disposable very quickly if not immediately.

Andrew McLaughin's insight:

Why isn't there an option for broken headphones to be fixed? Why is it easier/cheaper for consumers to just buy a new pair of headphones once theirs break? I guess it makes sense but it just seems wrong.

Andrew McLaughin's insight:

I found it very interesting that amazon was selling Panasonic headphones in a "2-pack". It makes me wonder if this product would be going to the same consumer. Why does the consumer need two pairs at once? Shouldn't they only need one?

Empathy: College students don't have as much as they used to

Today's college students are not as empathetic as college students of the 1980s and '90s, a University of Michigan study shows.

Andrew McLaughin's insight:

This scoop sheds light on my topic because it introduces the "generation me" of college students that are neglecting their headphones. It also sheds light on why these students are so concerned with themselves and less with others.

La Life's curator insight, October 16, 2013 7:57 AM

Empathy with things other than oneself may well be a key purpose of knowledge. In French, to "understand" is not etymologically to "support" or "provide a foundation" (under-stand), but to "take together", "take with" (com-prendre). It's a big difference. And knowledge is for understanding.
