"This trip has been amazing! Even better than I expected."
Este País não é para Velhos's insight:

It started in the wonderful town of Viana do Castelo.

Beautiful friendly people. Delicious food.

We were interviewed by the newspaper (Jornal de Notícias), and then by TV (RTP1). What fun seeing ourselves on the TV while we ate lunch!

We visited the Gerês National Park in the mountains. Beautiful. And swimming in a mountain stream was great fun. Well, I only got my feet wet, too cold, but fun watching the others swimming in a great pool in the stream.

Then we stopped in Amarante, Diana’s home town. I was greeted by music and many people, with a basket full of gifts from the stores on the street. Diana’s mother and the rest of large family greeted me with open arms and many hugs!

Now we are in Porto, the 2nd largest city, where Diana went to University, so she has been a great tour guide. We visited the Bolhão Market, São Bento, Torre dos Clérigos, Aliados and walked in some old beautiful streets! Then we had a yummy Francesinha in Diana’s favorite restaurant with many of friends.

Keep in touch with you all, i’m having a great great time here, in Portugal!

See the photos below, they speak by itself!

Cheers,

Parkie

Day 1, Viana do Castelo | This Country is not for Old People

Day 1, Viana do Castelo | This Country is not for Old People | This Country is not for Old People | Scoop.it

Day 1, Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo received us with much warmth and not just mean the weather.

Knew before-hand that was reserved for a "little" surprise host, and while we were at the Praça da República talking with a national newspaper, I was staring at the phone waiting for Peter to call me.

However it passes a male tuna. I left halfway through the conversation, I thought it would be for us and when they passed without stopping, I just apologized the journalist for the distraction and continue to talk for a few more seconds until my phone starts ringing. I answered, I looked back at the tuna and I was speechless when I saw someone talking on the phone. With me.

- "Parkie, these people are here for us!"

He tried to say something, but only opened his mouth in a gesture of amazement. But in some way he wanted to ask who were those guys and why they were dressed like this. He didn't ask the question, he did not want to be unpleasant.

When he realized who these people were, dressed in black, singing to us, touched up and clapped. - "Wow!"

We had dinner in O Laranjeira, mythical place in Viana do Castelo. Menu: olives, bagel, cheese, chicken patty, fish soup (amazing!) hake fillets and tomato rice. Tomato rice!

- "Parkie this type of rice is my favorite."

- "Yes, I can see that!"

I poured myself one more time and ended up with the pan that was on the table. I venture to say it was the best tomato rice I ate in my entire life. We spent the night there, in the house of Mr. Laranjeira who welcomed us so well, with privileged views of Santa Luzia.

The Parkie, who was tired, went to sleep. I picked up the bag, closed the front door and I let a little bit of my heart in Viana. A little pretty big.

Who is Parkie? This Country is not for Old People.

Who is Parkie? This Country is not for Old People. | This Country is not for Old People | Scoop.it

What about me…?

I am a retired Certified Public Accountant. (Chartered Accountant in UK).
I grew up in Michigan, a university town in the middle of the US. But it is too cold there. So I moved to California 67 years ago.

I have one kid, a daughter who is also a CPA. She works for the movie company Warner Bros. and I think she is really nice!! She lives also in Santa Barbara. I live with a big longhaired cat named Naarak. He is mostly Siamese. Naarak means cute in Thai!!

I love to travel. I have been to Europe about ten times, each trip from one to six months. And I have been to China two times. Once for three months, once for two months.

But I know my trip to Portugal will be the best of all!!

Because I will be traveling with a bright shining young lady who is Portuguese!! We met here in Santa Barbara through Couchsurfing, a wonderful organization that brings together travelers and hosts. How did I get so lucky??

Cheers,
Parkie

Last week we felt part of the family of Mr. James, as we passed at Viana do Castelo!

The Hotel Rural Quinta de S. Sebastião is much more than just a hotel. They received us in a way that I thought impossible and then I was sure: there is no people like ours... Warm, friendly, accomplices...

Mr. Jaime, Mrs. Madalena and her mother, Xaninha and Xavi, cousin and all the friends that received us: thank you so much for the breakfast and the makeshift reception so warm.

We'll meet again, I'm sure! Even my parents, just by seeing the photographs, said you were good people. And yes they are, I confirm.

We were also greeted by Hinoportuna, and it was a surprise, especially for Parkie! :)

Este País não é para Velhos's insight:

Diana is 25 years old and she loves to learn," probably would be one of the phrases that she would choose to define herself, if we asked her.

It's one of the things that she is sure she wants to do for her entire life. Learn, learn, learn... if possible to travel the world, meet new people and new cultures. A passion that she is learning to love.

With a degree in Social Communications, she is not looking for a job in this area for now. She loves new experiences and that's why, a year ago, she said goodbye to the startup where worked and went to Chicago to work as a babysitter.

It was during this period of time that has passed at U.S. that made the first trips alone and met Parkie.

She lives under the motto "sharing is to be happy," wants to see the world throughout his life, and most of all ... want to have "her eyes full of the world.
