A $5 Light For The Developing World With An Ingenious Fuel: Gravity

A $5 Light For The Developing World With An Ingenious Fuel: Gravity | The WOW Factor | Scoop.it
The GravityLight gets power from the slow lowering of a weight. All it takes is enough elbow grease to hoist the bag, and you can light a room with nothing but a bag of sand.

Many of the solutions out there are ingeniously solar powered. But GravityLight an idea from two British designers, is something completely different.

It gets its energy from gravity: a 22-pound bag of sand that gradually cranks a gear-train attached to a D.C. motor.

One lift is enough for 30 minutes of light, and recharging is as simple of pushing the weight up again.

The World’s First ‘Wikipedia Town’ - Great idea! #qrcode

The World’s First ‘Wikipedia Town’ - Great idea! #qrcode | The WOW Factor | Scoop.it

In a six-month collaboration project with Wikipedia, Welsh country town Monmouth is now the world’s first ‘Wikipedia town’.

The project—which is jointly funded by Monmouthshire City Council and Wikipedia UK—involves installing 1,000 over QR codes or ‘QRpedia codes’ onto every school, public building and monument in the town, and every exhibit in the town’s museum.

When the QRpedia codes were scanned by with a smartphone—it directs users to Wikipedia articles.

Visitors can even get a virtual tour of the town by using Wikipedia’s mobile app.

The purpose of this project is to raise the town’s profile and provide a unique visitor experience.

In order to support this project, free public Wi-Fi has also been set up throughout the town to allow visitors to connect online.

Will the world be ‘Wikipedia-ed’ in the future?

Visual Content Production is The Future of Content Marketing

Visual Content Production is The Future of Content Marketing | The WOW Factor | Scoop.it

"When we think of content, we often think of a compilation of words, words that tell a story relevant to our buyer and connect to our brand. The problem is that our prospects have less time to read these words, even when they tell a well-crafted story that can be useful in their jobs.

Why?"

Because there is just too much of it to find what really satisfies and interests you. That's why visual communication increasingly helps breaking down barriers of shorter attention spans, differentiate it from others and make it more interesting to understand and digest, than reading a buch of paragraphs of text. (Robin Good)

We’re in a state of information overflow and many are looking for a way to dig out. Simultaneously, we have learned to digest information faster – sometimes even at a glance.

This quick consumption of data lets us know the big message and allows us to decide whether or not we need to keep reading. The headline of an article is commonly used to make this decision, but how can we rely on more than a headline to get our point across?

The answer - Visual Content Marketing

Visual content marketing is the utilization of images to engage your prospects through the buying cycle. This can include Infographics, images, charts and graphs, memes, comics, photos, videos, and even visual notetaking. http://bit.ly/Qa2XZ3

This presentation, created with Column Five - http://bit.ly/LooubE , not only explains different types of visual content, but also to give examples to inspire your own visual content creations.

From Blog To Book: Hyperink

From Blog To Book: Hyperink | The WOW Factor | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Hyperink is a new publishing service which picks new blog authors and builds great story-books out of their already published content.

From FastCompany: "If you're a blogger who'd like to add the line "book author" to your resume but are too busy, well, blogging to get that far, e-book publisher Hyperink has a new solution for you.

The e-publisher today launched its "blog to book” service, with the goal of make the publishing process a whole lot easier, accessible, and profitable for bloggers who wouldn’t typically have access to a book deal.

...

Hyperink’s demand-first philosophy flips the way books are selected on its head.

Instead of starting with the writer, which is often the case with traditional publishers, they look at Google search trends, what people are talking about on social platforms, and what areas are selling well on Kindle. Once they analyze the data to identify areas where people want books, they then look for a writer (or blogger in this case) for that particular area.

With their blog to book service, eBooks are created using existing published content which means there’s no new writing on the blogger’s part.

...Hyperink identifies your most popular posts based on comments, views, shares, etc. and then assigns an editor to layout the content with a narrative flow.

...the typical amount of time required is just about 5-10 hours total.

Once the eBook is complete, Hyperink publishes it to its marketplace, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Kobo (iBooks coming soon). They then provide the blogger with copy, widgets, and tools to promote the title via his/her own blog.

Proceeds on books sold are split between both parties, giving bloggers the chance to turn their content into a passive income stream and enabling Hyperink to recoup their costs and generate revenue."

WOW Website: Curating Presentations

WOW Website: Curating Presentations | The WOW Factor | Scoop.it

Where is the WOW Factor?

Robin Good: Note and Point is an elegantly curated set of high-quality visual presentations selected and described/commented.

The collection is organized in four sections: Keynote, PowerPoint, PDF and SlideRocket.

This is a great example of how effective curation can create value, while providing greater visibility to the authors showcased and integrating an elegant and perfectly fitting advertising model (AdFusion) which is both inobtrusive and highly contextual. (I found the ads on Note&Point so interesting that I reloaded their home page multiple times to see them all, and clic the ones I was most interested in.)
