Storytelling Panel Summary at World Comm Forum, Davos Switzerland

Storytelling Panel Summary at World Comm Forum, Davos Switzerland | The world needs bigger stories | Scoop.it
On March 9, Katja Schleicher, Kirk Cheyfitz, Shawn Callahan and myself were invited to a debate on Storytelling at the World Communication Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The panel was brilliantly moderated by Guntram Kaiser, CEO of KaiserCommunication. It was designed as an interactive debate with the audience. This post is a summary of what was asked, and what was answered during the hour we were on stage. ExpectationsFor starters, and after welcoming everyone to the session, Guntram had collecte

Heaven knows how I missed this great piece but I'm glad a colleague sent it to me yesterday. It's a fabulous summary of the panel Q&A about storytelling that several colleagues were on. The panel was part of the World Communication Forum held in Davos, Switzerland this Spring.

The questions are fabulous and so are the answers! You will learn a lot from these folks. The article is very enjoyable, and was put together by my biz storytelling colleague Eva Snijders, who was on the panel.

Go have fun reading this rich, meaty post!

"Believe me, in the end this is about storytelling …
The meeting lasted maybe but twenty minutes, but if you get into a conversation about the financial sector and the world of consultancy with a Canadian banker of Indian origin, stories pop up quickly. I had ‘bar duty’ at my tennis club (that’s what a dedicated member does), it was not crowded and I read the book ‘ Mind over matter ‘. He ordered a drink from me and saw the title of the book, which was the cause of our conversation. He had an impressive knowledge of finance and economy, but what was really engaging was his narrative approach, it was in his Indian genes. When he got wind that I have a soft spot for storytelling, he used examples from the Western classical mythology to illustrate his point. We talked about analyses, methods and models and also about how some consultancy firms and individual consultants almost rigidly seem to stick to certain theories and methods."

Psychology Student Explores the Healing Power of Digital Storytelling

Psychology Student Explores the Healing Power of Digital Storytelling | The world needs bigger stories | Scoop.it
Virgil Moorehead, a psychology student in California, is studying digital storytelling and how it can help with Native historic trauma and healing.

“Red Moon” is one of nearly 70 digital shorts through which clients and staff of the Native American Health Center in Oakland, California have told their stories, and psychology intern Virgil Moorehead, 31, believes they are not only a way for Native people to control the narratives about their people but can serve to heal the scars of intergenerational trauma.

“Helping Natives tell these stories can help break the conspiracy of silence, the way we’re not talking about these issues,” said Moorehead, who is Yurok, Tolowa and an enrolled member of the Big Lagoon Rancheria. “It can help with the shame, guilt and depression that is so prevalent in Indian country.”

Inside Stories: "RADICAL LISTENING": AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KAETHE WEINGARTEN

Inside Stories: "RADICAL LISTENING": AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KAETHE WEINGARTEN | The world needs bigger stories | Scoop.it

There is a view that stories are always a contrivance, that they make meaning out of essentially random events. Is there such a thing as a “natural” narrative that emerges in postmodern narrative family therapy, as opposed to a constructed narrative?

My position would be that all narratives are co-constructed through the process of conversation. If a different group of people were present, a different narrative would emerge. At the same time, I do think that there are constraints on how varied the narrative can be. So I’d probably take a more moderate position on that.

Using Storytelling to Change Behavior

Using Storytelling to Change Behavior | The world needs bigger stories | Scoop.it

Storytelling is the key to employee engagement during change and communicating important messages internally so they are understood and retained. This article will help you understand how organizational stories can be used as part of a wider effort to change opinions, attitudes and behavior. Based on the advice and guidance of Tony Quinlan, principal consultant and chief storyteller at Narrate consultancy, we also tackle the concept of out-of-date stories, where a change story hasn't been concluding, leaving employees with "change fatigue."

Interpretación del concepto "storytelling" desde las 5W+1H. Me parece interesante el punto de vista desde el proceso sin embargo el celo por el oficio hace cuestionable el "todos" del Who (aunque a veces hay que recurrir a un profesional. : )

eva snijders's comment, October 9, 2013 3:04 PM
Hola Ricardo. : )
Ricardo De Leon's comment, October 9, 2013 7:13 PM
Hola Eva. Comparto lo mismo, tu guiño ; ) bastó para no sacar el "Who" de contexto.

Listening and Telling: Reflections Eight Years Later

"In 2005 I was part of a group who produced stories about the impact of child sexual assault through The Center for Digital Storytelling’s Silence Speaks initiative. Initially after viewing the stories at the end of the workshop, I felt curiosity and surprise at the immediacy of impact: I felt proud, visible, and necessary – quite different from how I had walked into the Berkeley lab feeling on the first day. What has become clear was that this process of internal re-structuring has continued to this day. Making Listening and Telling was the beginning."

The Power of Storytelling, by Christopher Rosche

The Power of Storytelling, by Christopher Rosche | The world needs bigger stories | Scoop.it

"I’ve seen this effect up close and personal dozens of times, especially in my early years as a consultant. Companies hired us to find creative solutions to challenging problems. After months of study, we would build massive PowerPoint presentations filled with bullets, facts, and numbers to present a way out. But for more times than I care to remember, the cold hard facts did not always motivate our clients to change.

Beginning around 2004, we found a much more effective approach. We still conducted interviews, research, and formulated solutions that made sense. The method of analysis remained largely the same.

What did change was the way we presented the solutions. When we told our clients a well-designed story that illustrated the correct set of solutions,  there was an incredibly marked difference in the reception. As we developed this narrative or story-based approach, we saw employees, corporate executives, and military leaders far more receptive and motivated to take on tough changes to their old behaviors."
