Why You Don't Need to Force Your Heels Down in Horseback Riding

Deborah Spector's insight:

This post contains some very useful clues to helping with your heels.

I hope everyone has good rides in 2014!

Diana Shaffner's curator insight, January 27, 2014 2:36 PM

This is a great article that should encourage riderss to cross-train their bodies. If the leg is supple and all ligaments able to stretch freely, the heel will "sink" down on its own. It should not be forced or pushed down as this will only tighten muscles in other areas where they in turn will interfere with your much needed "looseness". Riders with muscles tightened in order to force the appearance of a proper riding position are often bouncy and rigid riders who are hard for a horse to carry. Instead of forcing your heels down spend some time in the saddle at the halt or walk and just observe your body. How far will your heels "sink" on their own? Whatever the answer try then during non-riding times to find opportunities for stretching the back of your leg. As the article mentions, stairs are a good place to do this. Riding WELL is an athletic thing to do. Your riding will benefit greatly from a cross-trained and flexible body. Your horse will thank you as well.
