This 'breakthrough' #protein glue could save lives in emergencies #medicine #health  | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it

Australian and American biomedical engineers have developed a stretchy surgical glue that rapidly heals wounds, a "breakthrough" that has the potential to save lives in emergencies, its designers say.

The injectable glue, MeTro, is based on a naturally occurring protein called tropaelastin. It is applied directly to the wound and is then activated with UV light to form a complete seal, eliminating the need for staples or stitches. Its elasticity means it's designed to work well on shape-changing internal organs like the lungs and heart.

A study published in journal Science Translational Medicine showed the glue quickly and successfully sealed incisions in the arteries and lungs of rodents and the lungs of pigs.

Circular #RNA linked to #brain function

Circular #RNA linked to #brain function | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it
For the first time, scientists have shown that circular RNA is linked to brain function. When a RNA molecule called Cdr1as was deleted from the genome of mice, the animals had problems filtering out unnecessary information -- like patients suffering from neuropsychiatric disorders.

While hundreds of circular RNAs (circRNAs) are abundant in mammalian brains, one big question has remained unanswered: What are they actually good for? In the current issue of Science, Nikolaus Rajewsky and his team at the Berlin Institute of Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC), as well as other collaborators within the MDC and Charité, present data that -- for the first time -- link a circular RNA to brain function.

RNA is much more than the mundane messenger between DNA and the protein it encodes. Indeed, there are several different kinds of non-coding RNA molecules. They can be long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) or short regulatory RNAs (miRs); they can interfere with protein production (siRNAs) or help make it possible (tRNAs). In the past 20 years, scientists have discovered some two dozen RNA varieties that form intricate networks within the molecular microcosm. The most enigmatic among them are circRNAs, an unusual class of RNAs whose heads are connected to their tails to form a covalently closed ring. These structures had for decades been dismissed as a rare, exotic RNA species. In fact, the opposite is true. Current RNA-sequencing analyses have revealed that they are a large class of RNA, which is highly expressed in brain tissues.

Researchers Have Developed Microchips That Behave Like Brain Cells #tech #PC #AI #Skynet | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it
The human brain is used as a comparison for how computer's function. But, honestly, computers are nothing like human brains. Not yet, at least.

That could change as researchers have developed computing technology that uses light to mimic the functionality of a nerve's synapse, opening the way for hardware that combines the speed of modern processors with the efficiency of brainpower.

Brains and computers are both systems that can model, manipulate, and store information. From there, they don't tend to have all that much in common.

While processors in computers combine electrical impulses with tiny on-off switches to perform functions, neurons use chemical tides to distribute impulses across multiple channels called synapses.

The difference is significant as far as memory and power consumption go – no hardware can come close to the efficiency and storage capabilities of a human brain.

Not that our grey matter is an all-star performer; those waves of electrolytes and neurotransmitters can't beat the speed of electrons zipping through logic gates.

A team of researchers from Oxford, Münster and Exeter Universities has nailed what it sees as a "holy grail" of computing, creating a photonic integrated circuit that acts like a synapse.

"The development of computers that work more like the human brain has been a holy grail of scientists for decades," says senior researcher Harish Bhaskaran from the University of Oxford.

You Can Eat This #Algae-Based Water Bottle When You’re Done With Your Drink

You Can Eat This #Algae-Based Water Bottle When You’re Done With Your Drink | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it
Unlike plastic, which stays in landfills for centuries, this bottle design will start bio-degrading immediately.

A plastic water bottle may take hundreds–or even thousands–of years to degrade in a landfill. A new conceptual design for a water bottle is at the opposite extreme: Immediately after you drink it, it starts to fall apart. And if you don’t want to throw the bottle away, you can eat it.

The bottle is made from agar, a powder made from algae. When it’s mixed with water, it turns into a jelly-like material that can be molded into shapes–like a bottle.

“What makes this mix of algae and water an interesting solution is the lifespan of the bottle,” says Ari Jónsson, a product design student at Iceland Academy of the Arts, who created the experimental bottle. “It needs to contain liquid to keep its shape and as soon as it’s empty it will start to decompose."

New evidence that Siberian volcanic eruptions caused #extinction 250 million yrs ago #history #science #education

New evidence that Siberian volcanic eruptions caused #extinction 250 million yrs ago #history #science #education | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it
A team of scientists has found new evidence that the Great Permian Extinction, which occurred approximately 250 million years ago, was caused by massive volcanic eruptions that led to significant environmental changes.

The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, reports a global spike in the chemical element nickel at the time of extinction. The anomalous nickel most likely came from emanations related to the concurrent huge volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia. These eruptions, the researchers say, are associated with nickel-rich magmatic intrusions—rocks formed from the cooling of magma—that contain some of the greatest deposits of nickel ore on the planet.

Using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, which measures the abundance of rare elements at their atomic level, the scientists documented anomalous peaks of nickel in regions ranging from the Arctic to India at the time of the Great Permian Extinction—distributions that suggest these nickel anomalies were a worldwide phenomenon.

This new evidence of a nickel fingerprint at the time of the extinctions convinced the scientists that it was the volcanic upheaval in Siberia that produced intense global warming and other environmental changes that led to the disappearance of more than 90 percent of all species.

"The Siberian volcanic eruptions and related massive intrusions of nickel-rich magmas into the Earth's crust apparently emitted nickel-rich volatiles into the atmosphere, where they were distributed globally," explains New York University geologist Michael Rampino, the paper's senior author. "At the same time, explosive interactions of the magma with older coal deposits could have released large amounts of carbon dioxide and methane, two greenhouse gases, which would explain the intense global warming recorded in the oceans and on land at the time of the mass extinctions. The warm oceans also became sluggish and depleted in dissolved oxygen, contributing to the extinction of many forms of life in the sea".

“Unlimited #Imperialism”, History of American Militarism #greed drives #America and #history #Roman empire | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it
Today the American people must reaffirm their commitment to the Nuremberg Charter, Judgment, and Principles by holding their government officials fully accountable under international law and U.S. domestic law for the commission of such grievous international and domestic crimes. They must not permit any aspect of their foreign affairs and defense policies to be conducted by acknowledged “war criminals” according to the U.S. government’s own official definition of that term as set forth in U.S. Army Field Manual 27-10 (1956), the U.S. War Crimes Act, the Geneva Conventions, and the Hague Regulations, inter alia. The American people must insist upon the impeachment, dismissal, resignation, indictment, conviction, and long-term incarceration of all U.S. government officials guilty of such heinous international and domestic crimes. If not so restrained by civil resistance, the U.S. government could very well precipitate a Third World War. That is precisely what American civil resisters are doing today!

The future of American foreign policy and the peace of the world lie in the hands of American citizens—not the bureaucrats, legislators, judges, lobbyists, think-tankers, professors, and self-styled experts who inhibit Washington, D.C., New York City, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Hyde Park/Chicago, Illinois. Civil resistance is the way to go! This is our Nuremberg Moment now! Thank you.

Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Have Extragalactic Origins #physics #astrophysics #science

Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Have Extragalactic Origins #physics #astrophysics #science | Limitless learning Universe | Scoop.it
For the first time, astrophysicists have confirmed that cosmic rays with ultra-high energies come from outside our Milky Way Galaxy.

Cosmic rays are atomic nuclei arriving from outer space that can reach the highest energies (exa-electronvolt) observed in nature.

Low-energy cosmic rays come from the Sun or from our own Galaxy, but the origin of the highest-energy particles has been the subject of debate ever since they were first discovered 50 years ago: do they come from the Milky Way or from extragalactic objects?

“We are now considerably closer to solving the mystery of where and how these extraordinary particles are created, a question of great interest to astrophysicists,” said Karl-Heinz Kampert, a professor at the University of Wuppertal in Germany and spokesperson for the Auger Collaboration, which operates the largest cosmic-ray observatory ever built.

“At the Pierre Auger Observatory, cosmic rays are detected by measuring the Cherenkov light — electromagnetic radiation emitted by charged particles passing through a medium, such as water, at greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium,” Professor Kampert and colleagues explained.

“We measure the Cherenkov light produced in a detector, which is a large plastic structure that contains 12 tons of water. They pick up a signal in a few detectors within an array of 1,600 detectors."

“The detectors are spread over 3,000 km2 near the town of Malargüe in western Argentina. The times of arrival of the particles at the detectors, measured with GPS receivers, are used to determine the direction from which the particles came within approximately one degree.”
