I visited the Virungas about 15 years ago. The NP is surrounded by subsistence farmers farming land that was once rainforest. There are few trees left outside the park, and the temptation to cut timber and grow extra crops is great. What they really need is REDD+ or similar to encourage them to replant the forests and derive a decent income from the land. It is a very poor region and they need real help to develop beyond survival.
