Cloud communications company Twilio is making that possible. Today it is announcing a new native iOS software developer kit for its Twilio Client, allowing voice-over-IP calls from any app.

 

The future of telephony is in data connections, not wireless minutes and Twilio is looking to make the mobile carriers' networks programmable for the next generation of app developers.

Today, Twillio is launching their cloud-based VoIP offering that enables developers to add VoIP capabilities to any website with just three lines of code. Twilio's VoIP developer toolkit called “Twilio Client” enables realtime two-ray audio to voice-enable browsers, iOS, and Android Apps. Twilio's product uses the Flash plugin to access the microphone. But since Apple's iOS doesn't support Flash I'm told for mobile they are integrating with iOS and Android through custom mobile SDKs. The mobile SDKs will allow the Android and iPhone mobile platforms to offer Twilio-powered VoIP to their applications.

The new version lets Skype users instant message their Facebook friends via Skype, making Skype a nice consolidated app for all your IM needs. You can also comment on friend's Facebook status updates. You also have the ability to use the Facebook News Feed within Skype to "like" a friend's status or comment on it without logging into Facebook.

Research carried out by infrastructure solutions provider Mavenir Systems on behalf of mobileSQUARED suggests that carriers are already finding that third-party solutions are beginning to impact their business, and it’s only going to get worse for the bottom line…

In order to get a clear picture of what is going on, Mavenir spoke to 31 different cell carriers around the globe, and the general consensus is a simple one: applications such as Skype, WhatsApp, and iMessage are causing carriers to notice a reduction in voice calls and, importantly, a reduction in the revenues generated from the lucrative SMS services they offer.

The app is called the ePhone and it is developed by Comwave. The app even allows for free video calls to other ePhone users. The bad news is that unlike other VoIP apps such as Viber, Comwave ePhone will not be free and will come at a subscription fee of $20 per year, although first time users will be able to enjoy a 30 day trial with 100 free minutes to over 60 countries. Purchasing the app will then net you 250 minutes per month in talk time.
