Don’t be afraid to unleash your entrepreneurial spirit on the world. Choose to live life by your rules, not someone else’s. As George Bernard Shaw so aptly reminds us, “The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, they make them.” Be that person.

LaPorte County now has a veterans court dedicated to adjuticating cases of former servicemen and women whose combat duty is the root cause of the crimes they've committed.

Mike Masin's insight:

Veterans accused in this county of misdemeanors and low-level felonies may now be adjudicated in a Veterans Court if their combat duty is a factor in their case.

Including PTS in a judgement is only fair. Some of these veterans (hopefully many) will heal and be able to 'come home' with appropriate medical treatment.

Watch out: What you're not seeing in the office

Watch out: What you're not seeing in the office | The View From Under My Hat (tm) | Scoop.it

I've learned the curse of the native eye extends beyond the work of a foreign correspondent. It relates to all of us, in our lives and in our offices, every day. We stop seeing what's odd, unusual or special about our environment. We take for granted how things are done. And we stop questioning the parts of the status quo that would strike any outsider as downright silly.

Via Steve Krogull, Bobby Dillard
Mike Masin's insight:

Don't let "native eyes" dull our sight. We're used to the regular routine and we become desensitized to information that can help or hurt us. Take a fresh look!

Casey blasts VA for not revealing Legionnaires’ reports

Casey blasts VA for not revealing Legionnaires’ reports | The View From Under My Hat (tm) | Scoop.it
U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs insulted the families of the victims of the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the Pittsburgh VA by not revealing two internal investigations that showed what caused the deadly outbreak of 2011 and 2012. “When a federal government agency has information that could shed light on and give information to families searching for answers, but doesn’t release it,” Mr. Casey, D-Pa., said in an interview, “to withhold that is insulting and I don’t think in any way fortifies the confidence that people have in the VA, and, if anything, will undermine that confidence.” His comments came after he sent a letter to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki asking the VA to release the internal investigations to him and the public that were
Mike Masin's insight:

By refusing to release its reports about the cause of the deadly Legionnaires’ outbreaks at the Pittsburgh VA (2011, 2102), we can only assume the VA is trying to sweep its failure under the rug or blame it on the cat.

Pattern of Misconduct

Pattern of Misconduct | The View From Under My Hat (tm) | Scoop.it
Mike Masin's insight:

Psychological screenings are mandated by Congress to protect vets suffering from PTS, and related injuries, from being discharged for misconduct and losing their benefits.

They aren't working as intended. The connection between soldiers' injuries and their behavior isn't being considered, and the screenings are being manipulated. Wounded troops can be diagnosed with combat wounds like PTS and still be unfairly discharged and denied a lifetime of benefits.
