Ship Study Should Favor Existing Designs

Ships that look like littoral combat ships (LCS), but armed with SM-2 surface-to-air missiles, bigger guns and Aegis combat systems. A grey-hull patrol frigate that takes the hull of a white coast guard cutter and increases its combat power.

In the midst of budget cuts and shrinking defense budgets, the US Navy is looking for innovative ways to expand the effectiveness and capabilities of existing platforms.

 

Navy Brass will have to balance current capabilities against the projected mission profiles and determine what is the best use of their resources. The shift towards modular ship platforms is a great idea, but only if it fits within the United States' overall defense and security strategy.
