Walmart Makes HUGE Move After LA Makes $15 Minimum Wage Hike

Walmart Makes HUGE Move After LA Makes $15 Minimum Wage Hike | The Unintended Consequences File | Scoop.it
Liberals argued, “Try making a living on minimum wage.” Employers argued back, “Try making a profit paying $15 an hour to an unskilled laborer.” Many people who have gone to college and have advanced degrees don’t earn $15 an hour. No wonder Walmart said no way. And it’s not just Walmart that’s rebelling against unreasonable liberal demands. Many restaurants say the $15 minimum wage has eaten away at as much as 50 percent of their operating costs. A $15 minimum wage is a job killer — and a good reason to relocate, automate or jack up your prices. At UC
James Schreier's insight:

Is this a biased or balanced view of the demand for a $15 an hour minimum wage?  Are the obviously predictable consequences identified here short term -- or long term?  A challenging question that demonstrates how we generally fail to explore consequences!  Ought to be explored thoroughly!

But the reason I looked at foster care is that it’s a microcosm, it’s a sample set that we have pretty extraordinary data around to date, even though we can’t seem to fix it. It’s a microcosm for what happens when displacement happens abroad as the unintended consequences of our actions or in actions in the rest of the world.

Walmart’s Out-of-Control Crime Problem Is Driving Police Crazy

Walmart’s Out-of-Control Crime Problem Is Driving Police Crazy | The Unintended Consequences File | Scoop.it
There’s nothing inevitable about the level of crime at Walmart. It’s the direct, if unintended, result of corporate policy. Beginning as far back as 2000, when former CEO Lee Scott took over, an aggressive cost-cutting crusade led many stores to deteriorate. The famed greeters were removed, taking away a deterrent to theft at the porous entrances and exits. Self-checkout scanners replaced many cashiers. Walmart added stores faster than it hired employees. The company has one worker for every 524 square feet of retail space, a 19 percent increase in space per employee from a decade ago.
