How many of your customer facing people are trained to be able to ask the right questions to get the whole story before we jump in and state our "opinions" of what is going on.

Whether in sales and/or technical support, one of the worst things we can do is "tell" a customer where they are at. We do not know without asking questions first. Remember the saying, "There is more to the story than meets the eye".

NOTE: Read the input from Karen Dietz on how using questions helps to "evoke the customer's story". http://sco.lt/6wO3QP

Michael Brenner has put together a useful list of the top 30 news sources you should be following if you are interested in online business and marketing news.

Useful, resourceful. 7/10

P.S.: In my humble opinion, this list is tainted by the author placing the magazine he writes for (Forbes in this case) as the top one in the list. As a curator this is something I suggest to avoid like the pest as it instantly taints your supposedly impartial collector skills with a way too evident marketing effort, which dents significantly into the credibility of the overall list and the on the reputation of the writer.

In my effort to help others recognize effective curation from simple-minded content marketing efforts I feel quite important to highlight such small details, as even though they may appear of no relevance to some people today, they will have enormous importance - in my opinion - in the near future.

Key excerpts...

In 2012, business owners indicated that they would focus on crafting thorough content marketing strategies to engage their audiences online. While custom content creation remains an important practice in 2013, professionals recognize that their strategies must evolve to build online narratives that draw in audiences, not just increase PageRank in SERPs.

As content marketing evolves alongside web media, the level of depth marketers must create for their campaigns will rise substantially. The volume of content types will ever increase, but marketers must remember their bread and butter – don’t forget to lay the foundation before starting to build.

15 Important Tips To Help You Keep Your Customers

15 Important Tips To Help You Keep Your Customers | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article:
"According to the Harvard Business School, increasing customer retention rates by 5 percent increases profits by 25 percent to 95 percent.
In order to help you increase your own retention rates, we’ve compiled a list of our 15 favorite tips (backed by academic research and case studies) on increasing customer loyalty, divided into five easy-to-browse sections.

- Communication
It’s hard to create loyal customers if they aren’t paying attention to you. Given this fact, below are our favorite bits of research on clear communication with customers.
1. Stand for something;
2. Utilize positive social proof;
3. Invoke the inner ego;

- Selling
If customers don’t enjoy your selling process, they’ll likely never do business with you again. Thus, selling to customers the “correct” way is an integral part of creating customer loyalty. Below are a few studies to help you improve the process.
4. Use the words they love to hear;
5. Reduce pain points and friction;

- Reciprocity
Reciprocity is the social construct that makes the world go ’round… or in your case, keeps your customers coming back. The premise is simple: Go above and beyond for customers and get rewarded with repeat business. The execution, however, can be trickier, so below is a compilation of interesting research on how to improve reciprocity with your customers.
6. Realize that budget is negligible;
7. Utilize surprise reciprocity;
8. Make it personal;

- Support
This one is a no-brainer: You can’t create a tribe of loyal customers without an exceptional customer service experience that keeps them coming back. In this section, we’re going to bust a few customer service myths wide open, as well as tackle some important things you need to keep in mind when offering support online.
9. Speed is secondary to quality;
10. Customers enjoy businesses who know them;
11. Choose the right platform;
12. Make it a communal effort;

- Loyalty Programs
The key to creating customer loyalty programs that work is to know why customers use them and what gets customers to keep using them. Below you’ll find consumer research that answers these questions.
13. Get people started;
14. Get ideal customers to be VIPs;
15. Label your customers..."

Gaurav Pandey's curator insight, March 14, 2013 4:42 PM

Excellent post.

I'd like to add a few thoughts here:

Customer retention is all about value creation and engagement. Don't make it all about your brand, some fun and entertainment such as polls, infographics, sweepstakes, pictures, videos etc. go a long way in retaining interest in your brand.

With the overload of one-dimensional posts on social pages of brands, it's even more important for marketers to go that extra mile  to gauge the pulse of your community. That said, you have to build a community first.

Social networks and communities are different, although there may be some overlap. It's these communities which will really provide momentum to your campaigns. By brining like-minded people together as part of these communities, businesses come across as more transparent and supportive than agressive. This is because in a community individuals come together and that gives them the power to decide collectively, to spread the word and take actions which are not forced on them.

If brands recognise this, they will understand that building communities and not just social networks is the way forward. Community building takes more than a few promoted posts and luring customers in with discount coupons, it takes sustained effort at building trust. And if a company manages to achieve this, the rewards are plentiful as their customers will then act as their brand ambassadors helping spread the message organically.

So my advice to marketers is be open, be responsive, be socially responsible and build trust through sustained effort.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!

#ContentCuration : What Makes a Good Content Curator?

#ContentCuration : What Makes a Good Content Curator? | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the article:
"Sharing good content shows you understand what’s interesting and valuable to your target markets. It will help you increase your followers and establish your credibility.
A good content curator has to sift through tons of content, quickly and efficiently, finding what is both relevant and good quality.

So what does a good content curator look like?
1) Really Long Arms:
You have the expanded reach to know the smaller players with a unique perspective, the powerhouse publishers, and all of the niche players. This allows for a healthy variety of content, with differing perspectives.

2) Super Fast Scanning Eyes:
An efficient content curator knows how to scan an article for legitimacy, value, and relevance to their target market.

3) A Raised Eyebrow:
Each time you come upon something new, your eyebrow is already up, because you’re there to sniff it out to make sure it’ll pass the test. People will lose interest in what you share and you will hurt your credibility if you share content that isn’t high quality.

4) A Belly Full of Hunger:
Good content curators love what they do and are passionate about traversing the wide expanse of the web to find the best content possible."

Robin Good's insight:

Lindsey Weintraub at SocialMediaToday has a short but valuable guide to four key traits a good curator really needs to have.

From the ability to search and tap into sources that should not be what everyone else is looking at, to the ability to know in and out its chosen niche of interest and its players, the good content curator has an uncanny talent for scanning, selecting and triple-verifying anything potentially interesting before even considering showcasing in its selections.

Rightful. Good for anyone just starting out with curation. 7/10

3 Essential Content Curation Best Practices to Boost Content Marketing Performance

3 Essential Content Curation Best Practices to Boost Content Marketing Performance | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

Here is an excerpt from interesting article by Lee Odden on his Online Marketing Blog:

"Curation is the cornerstone of being useful on the social web by finding, filtering and adding insight to content online and sharing with social networks.

Qualitative curation over time helps associate the topics being curated with the company or person doing the curating.
In combination with original content and industry participation, curation can be very powerful for creating awareness and credibility.

Content Curation Facilitates Many Content Marketing Objectives:
- Efficient, topically focused collection of information that appeals to customers looking for a “single source” on a particular topic.
- Grows awareness of your brand as a topical authority based on adding insight to industry commentary.
- Facilitates networking into spheres of influence in your industry. Collecting and sharing content from influential members of your community can get you on their radar resulting in being mentioned, links or even referrals.

Blending a mix of new content with the filtering and management of other useful information streams is a productive and manageable solution for providing prospective customers a steady stream of high quality and relevant content.
Pure creation is demanding. Pure automation doesn’t engage. Curating content can provide the best of both. Here are several best practices to help you with curation sources, types of content and where to publish.

1. Sources of News to Curate:
- Industry specific newsletters sent to you via email;
- Links to content and media shared on Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Reddit and other social sharing websites;
- Curation tools: Flipboard, Scoop.it, Storify.com;
- Real-time search engines: Topsy, socialmention.com;
- Niche topic blogs;
(...and others on original article)

2. Types of Content to Curate:
- Useful resources relevant to your target audience: blogs, news, training, tips, networking and industry events;
- Content created by influential people of importance to the target audience
- Statistics, research and reports;
- Compelling or provocative industry news;
- Tips, How To’s and best practices;
- Compile large collections of resources according to topical theme;
(...and more others on original article)

3. Where to Publish Curated Content:
- Company Blog;
- eBooks;
- Social Media Channels;
- Niche Microsite Dedicated to a Specific News Category.

The key is to do the homework of understanding what motivates your community and to assemble a compelling mix of curated, repurposed and original content to inspire them to engage and buy. Be thoughtful about the usefulness of the content you assemble, create and promote..."

YES!! I agree, YouTube is a powerful advertising tool for marketers. It can change the total aspects of brands and perception towards consumers. I also agree with Shaima’a, this article does fail to outline the negative effects of advertising through YouTube. Consumers who have experienced a positive outlook on a product are less likely to advertise it whereas dissatisfied consumers will vent to the world about their negative experience.

Can Content Marketing Really Generate B2B Sales?

Can Content Marketing Really Generate B2B Sales? | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

Content marketinghas become a bit of a buzzword recently. It’s become a synonym for digital marketing and a catchall term for marketing tactics like blogging and social media. It’s also become an essential part of B2B marketing strategies, recent research found that 88% of B2B content marketing spends are to either stay the same or increase in 2013.

For B2B companies, the bottom line is sales. Most B2Bs aren’t interested in becoming a household name brand, or appearing on billboards. They just want to sell their product. Which is odd, considering that same research found that only 43% of B2Bs listed sales as a measurable target for content marketing.
