Digital Marketing: Pandora’s Box, Panacea or Global Equalizer?

Digital Marketing: Pandora’s Box, Panacea or Global Equalizer? | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

This is the first in a series of planning and executing successful digital marketing campaigns by Michael Nelson, for Curatti
Jan Gordon:

Digital marketing can either make or break a small business.  If you do it well, you’re rewarded with a reliable and growing stream of customers.  If you do it poorly, you can kill your brand or your business with wasted time and blown budgets.

How do you give your business the best chance to be on the successful side of the equation?

Here are a few highlights:

Marketing is about generating sales for your business.  That is and should be the purpose of marketing regardless of whether you are building your brand or specifically trying to grow your revenue.

We have inbound marketing, attraction marketing, email marketing, influence marketing, network marketing, content marketing, outbound marketing, affiliate marketing and so on.

How do we pick one, especially if we are small business owners and not marketing experts?

The most important word in those phrases is “marketing.”  It’s the root of what we’re trying to do.

If you charge ahead with digital marketing without a clear goal and way to measure your progress, then it doesn’t matter which marketing method you select.

Begin with setting the theme for your campaign.  Your theme will be high level and visionary in nature.  You then create three (no more) goals that if reached will propel you towards your goal.

Now you plan.  How will you reach your goals, what needs to be done, what level of resource will be committed to each action and so on.

The next article will address creating marketing messages,

Circumstance Marketing, and crafting those messages for the digital world.  So stay tuned!

How to Hire for Emotional Intelligence

How to Hire for Emotional Intelligence | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

We know from research (and common sense) that people who understand and manage their own and others’ emotions make better leaders. They are able to deal with stress, overcome obstacles, and inspire others to work toward collective goals. They manage conflict with less fallout and build stronger teams. And they are generally happier at work, too. But far too many managers lack basic self-awareness and social skills. They don’t recognize the impact of their own feelings and moods. They are less adaptable than they need to be in today’s fast-paced world. And they don’t demonstrate basic empathy for others: they don’t understand people’s needs, which means they are unable to meet those needs or inspire people to act.

What kind of hire to you make?  Do you base your hires on IQ or EQ, both are important, but for me emotional intelligence is critical when making hiring decisions, especially at a senior level.

Six Things You Don't Owe Your Boss

Six Things You Don't Owe Your Boss | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

The typical workday is long enough as it is, and technology is making it even longer. When you do finally get home from a full day at the office, your mobile phone rings off the hook, and emails drop into your inbox from people who expect immediate responses.

While most people claim to disconnect as soon as they get home, recent research says otherwise. A study conducted by the American Psychological Association found that more than 50% of us check work email before and after work hours, throughout the weekend, and even when we’re sick. Even worse, 44% of us check work email while on vacation.

A Northern Illinois University study that came out this summer shows just how bad this level of connection really is. The study found that the expectation that people need to respond to emails during off-work hours produces a prolonged stress response, which the researchers named telepressure.

The Truth About Wasting Time At Work - Forbes

The Truth About Wasting Time At Work - Forbes | The Twinkie Awards | Scoop.it

If you look at the standard organizational model, the first thing you notice is that it’s a pyramid. It is narrower at the top than at the bottom. There are a lot of worker bees at the bottom of the pyramid — that’s why the base of the pyramid is broader than the top of the pyramid is. There are fewer managers than employees, and there are a very small number of executives at the top of the organization, calling the shots.

Since the typical organization has lots of non-management employees and only a small number of senior-level leaders, it stands to reason that every minute of a highly-placed executive’s day has great impact. The decisions C-level leaders make have huge ramifications on everything from the company’s stock price tomorrow to the firm’s existence or nonexistence five years from now.

A sales manager recently told me about an embarrassing scene that unfolded before an important client meeting. “Two teams from our firm were waiting in the lobby when the client walked in, and the groups didn’t recognize each other,” she said. “What a contradiction of our promise to provide integrated solutions! Firms that want to unite far-flung units often struggle to get employees to collaborate.

Marja van Solkema's curator insight, February 1, 2:59 AM

This piece actually touches the important subjects of System Thinking and Value Thinking, two important cornerstones of Agile organizations. System Thinking covers the subject of knowing your own organization: understand the impact of your (team's) activities on the organization, on the product, on the service your provide. Value Thinking covers the subject of adding value to the end-result with everything you do.

It's not a simple task to implement this. Start with dialogue, with inquiring about what this looks like in your organization. Tell your stories from top CEO level to the cleaning lady and all roles in between and around, as those stories make your company's story... Dream your dream together and make this dream come true, together! Grow Appreciative Inquiry (cause that's what I'm referring to) into your company's DNA and make the Agile mindset work!
