Connectivism offers a theory of learning for the digital age that is usually understood as contrasting with traditional behaviourist, cognitivist, and constructivist approaches. This article will provide an original and significant development of this theory through arguing and demonstrating how it can benefit from social constructivist perspectives and a focus on dialogue. Similarly, I argue that we need to ask whether networked social media is, essentially, a new landscape for dialogue and therefore should be conceived and investigated based on this premise, through considering dialogue as the primary means to develop and exploit connections for learning. A key lever in this argument is the increasingly important requirement for greater criticality on the Internet in relation to our assessment and development of connections with people and resources. The open, participative, and social web actually requires a greater emphasis on higher order cognitive and social competencies that are realised predominantly through dialogue and discourse. Or, as Siemens (2004) implies, in his call to rethink the fundamental precepts of learning, we need to shift our focus to promoting core evaluative skills for flexible learning that will, for example, allow us to actuate the knowledge we need at the point that we need it. A corollary of this is the need to reorient educational experiences to ensure that we develop in our learners the ability “to think, reason, and analyse.” In considering how we can achieve these aims this article will review the principles of connectivism from a dialogue perspective; propose some social constructivist approaches, based on dialectic and dialogic dimensions of dialogue, which can act as levers in realising connectivist learning dialogue; demonstrate how dialogue games can link the discussed theories to the design and performance of networked dialogue processes; and consider the broader implications of this work for designing and delivering sociotechnical learning.

Establishing a Culture of Student Voice

By co-developing classroom norms and practicing reflection and feedback, you create a culture where students want to be included because their voice matters.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, July 4, 1:36 PM
I think schools where the norm is a culture of having teacher voice and agency exists might stand a better chance of establishing student voice. Otherwise, it is not sustainable. Forming school and classroom norms fit together. Reflecting and offering feedback are part of the agency that comes with voice.
Rosemarri Klamn's curator insight, July 10, 1:24 PM
Organizational leadership and culture are vital in preparing students for the future. Giving children and young adults a safe space for social interaction in morning meetings so that respect for self and others is built early seems like a good strategy if teachers embrace the technique. Another interesting strategy for working on respect and self-respect is meditation in schools, which has garnered positive results in some schools.   This is consistent with new teaching approaches to build student confidence and prepare students for college and workplace skills, as noted in Trends in Digital Learning (Blackboard.com, 2017, p.3). The “ability to work with diverse groups of people” and “teamwork and collaboration” rank number 2 and 4 on parent’s list of skills they think their children require to be successful in post-secondary and the workplace.

Can the integration of a PLE in an ePortfolio platform improve generic competences?

Can the integration of a PLE in an ePortfolio platform improve generic competences? | The tools of the teaching trade | Scoop.it

The study analyzes the improvement in generic competences through e-portfolio/PLE platform and didactic planning. The new version of the platform, Digital Folder, contains utilities for students and teachers and some PLE components that help the learning process through e-portfolios. Didactic planning is compared for students from the University of Vic and the University of Barcelona, with a total of 61 participants. A questionnaire has been applied for measuring the use of functions and how much these functions aid in the improvement of the generic competences (reflection, planning and selection of information). The results confirm that the most helpful functions for students are: the Schedule, the Academic tasks, the Teacher’s portfolio and Dialogue with the teacher. However, the implication of these functions in the improvement of the competences depends on didactic planning overall for reflection on learning.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, July 1, 5:21 AM
