Our STEM Vital Signs research shows that, while a STEM background offers no guarantees—nothing does—it sure does improve the odds. In the past three years, jobless people outnumbered new job postings by more than three to one. In the STEM fields, by contrast, job postings outnumbered the jobless by almost two to one.

AmSafe® Industries, Inc. today unveiled a new scholarship program at the Team America Rocketry Challenge (“TARC”). Established in the honor of Brendan M. Kutler, who suddenly and unexpectedly died in his sleep on December 29, 2009, at the age of seventeen, the $5,000 annual, four-year scholarship will be open to all students who participate in the TARC competition during their Junior or Senior years of high school.

America has a crisis. First, of the 3.2 million students who earned high school diplomas this year, at least one third of those who attend college from this group will require remediation. Second, while the news is better for students earning diplomas, over 1 million students who should have graduated in 2012 did not. These underprepared and disengaged graduates and dropouts are part of a crisis in the United States.

 

Industry-education partnerships in Kentucky, California prove STEM solutions are out there.
