Last month, Microsoft introduced Delve, built on top of Microsoft Graph. Graph joined people across the enterprise in a single, unified… well graph. But Delve offered those connected users a way to find each other. There is a lot of reason to be excited about it, especially for those who have been following the Microsoft One strategy. That strategy was further clarified by CEO Satya Nadella’s Mobile First, Cloud First mantra. But it wasn’t entirely clear for those outside the Topic: Information Management.

Last month, Microsoft introduced Delve, a search and discovery engine that sits on top of Microsoft Graph. Delve personalizes all the content that exists across your Office 365 applications. It is built on Office Graph, which analyzes user metadata from the Office 365 environment (Yammer, SharePoint Online, Lync and Office Online) and relates different kinds of content to each other.

 

The result is that it can show what is important using connection information provided by Office Graph to surface the most relevant topics and content that exists in the enterprise. Delve offers different views of this information; It has the ‘Whole View’, ‘My View’ and a ‘My Shared with You’ view, all of which surface insights depending on what is needed. From the early roll-outs, users are discovering content in the ‘Whole View”’ that they didn’t know existed. 

 

The personalization element is interesting (if it works) in that it uses machine learning techniques to track the use of information assets by users in order to identify and surface content that is potentially of greater relevance to the user.

 

It seems Microsoft is at last beginning to understand the difference between content management (e.g. Sharepoint) and enterprise social networks. Office 365 certainly appears be denting the ambitions of Google For Work for the lucrative enterprise collaboration space.

Twitter users who will waste your time

There are certain types of users you should avoid every time you see them on horizon. They are not interested in any way in you, or what you want to tell them. They are just people (and often just machines) whose lone goal is to sell you stuff. Some of them just collect followers for sale. For these reasons, there is no point to follow them.

Some useful tips on what to look out for before you follow that person on twitter. I would add to the list: someone who has 20k+ of followers but has very few tweets. You know, therefore, that the followers have been bought rather than investing time and effort in building a personal network.

I've picked this because it identifies a facet of open knowledge that is becoming increasingly important - the concept of "open manufacturing".

 

Additive manufacturing - or 3D printing as it is more commonly known - is being used in more industry sectors than ever before. New materials and use cases have led to 3D manufacturing in Robotics, Health, Entertainment, Automobiles, Fashion, Construction etc.

 

I particularly liked this quote from David Rowan at Wired: "The democratisation of manufacturing will empower anyone with a compelling idea to prototype, make and launch a physical product at speed and low cost".

 

3D printing is no longer a niche activity for the hobbyists - it is potentially the most important innovation of this decade.

Information Theory teaches  us that almost all information carries extraneous clutter, background noise, padding, carrier waves, etc., that are unrelated to the core “message.” The earliest days of analog signaling rapidly uncovered the signal to noise problem — if a message is hard to hear because of background static, turning up the volume amplifies the noise along with the signal. Context and Curation help us to isolate the signal from the noise.

Michael Harris is the author of “The End of Absence: Reclaiming What We’ve Lost in a World of Constant Connection,” a new book about how technology affects society. It follows in the footsteps of Nicholas Carr, whose “The Shallows” is a modern classic of internet criticism. But Harris takes a different path from those that have come before. Instead of a broad investigation into the effects of constant connectivity on human behaviour, Harris looks at a very specific demographic: people born before 1985, or the very opposite of the “millennial” demographic coveted by advertisers and targeted by new media outlets.

The community that built the largest encyclopedia in history is shrinking, even as more people and Internet services depend on it than ever. Can it be revived, or is this the end of the Web’s idealistic era?

Wikipedia is in decline as the number of editors (over 51,000 in 2007)  continues to fall, with only 31,000 considered as active contributors in 2014.


The main source of these problems is not mysterious. The loose collective running the site today, estimated to be 90 percent male, operates a crushing bureaucracy with an often abrasive atmosphere that deters newcomers who might increase participation in Wikipedia and broaden its coverage.


But are the problems deeper than this, given that the web culture now is a lot different to what it was back in 2001, when Wikipedia was first launched.


Clay Shirky was one of the biggest boosters of an idea, popular during the previous decade, that the Web encouraged strangers to come together and achieve things impossible for a conventional organisation. Wikipedia is proof there was some truth to that notion. But today’s Web is dominated by sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where people maintain personal, egocentric feeds. Outside specific settings like massive multiplayer games, relatively few people mingle in a shared virtual space.

The 3 R’s:  Reinvent, Rethink, and RewireAccording to Cognizant, the following are the 3 R’s of corporate model transformation to future-proof your business:


  1. Reinvent: Updating the Business Model.   Cognizant says: “In some cases, companies are putting customer opinions and ideas at the center of their R&D model to ensure new products and services will succeed in the market. In others, business-to-business suppliers are using social networking to improve their delivery and replenishment models. In all these cases, moving to a collaborative business model opens new channels of talent, knowledge, expertise and capability.”
  2. This includes customer-facing core competencies; intuitive user interfaces inspired by consumer-facing mobile applications; collaborative business models involving customer and supplier co-creation; and virtual, globally dispersed teams focused on executing knowledge-intensive business processes.”


8 Future-of-Work Enablers

According to Cognizant, the 8 future-of-work enablers are as follows:


  1. Community Interaction.  Interacting/engaging with users through social media.
  2. Innovation.  Creation of an environment to breed and enable innovation of products and services, in the form of open, closed and virtual innovation.
  3. Worker empowerment.  Empowering the workforce to be location-agnostic through communication-rich mobile devices and enabling a culture of collaboration and creativity for millennial employees.
  4. Virtual collaboration.  Building platforms of collaboration to enable the virtual environment.
  5. Customer empowerment.  Empowering customers by providing cutting-edge tools and media to improve the customer experience.
  6. Commercial model flexibility.  Flexibility to choose between being asset heavy vs. asset light (Cap-Ex vs Op-Ex; buy vs. lease), as appropriate.

Another excellent article from Dion Hinchliffe, on the state of social business. He notes the reason the enterprise and the consumer digital world often look so different, is because they are different. And while you can't replicate the Internet within the enterprise exactly, you can bring in and adapt what works about it best, such as an effective and pervasive deep link structure, simple APIs for everything, a relentless focus on user experience, new models for working together, cloud-based technology stacks, decentralised service delivery, and just-plain sufficient investment in technology.

 

And also...the hardest part of the whole challenge facing the enterprise is likely adopting a 'digital-first' mindset. As in, how do I rethink my business in terms of digital possibility in today's fast-changing and complex technology landscape.

So here is a better question. Which ONE social media site would you be on if you could only be on ONE site? For me the answer is still Facebook, but I am pretty darned close to changing that vote to Twitter....

At the risk of sounding trite, I stick by the mantra that "Facebook is the place to go to connect with people you knew at school; Twitter is the place to go to connect with people you WISHED you had known at school".

 

It works for me :-)

Yes, Google is encroaching into Microsoft’s traditional business space in a vicious productivity fight. But Google's rebranding of its Enterprise Business as Google for Work yesterday seems to be a tacit acceptance — for the moment, at least — that Microsoft is the Enterprise Daddy.Microsoft, meanwhile, has responded to Google's blows with a number of financial incentives that must have many Chief Financial Officers salivating over their ledgers. A useful summary of Microsoft's Office365 strategy and how it is positioning itself against Google's enterprise initiatives (Google for Work/Goggle Drive). Interesting to note that Apple's enterprise ambitions are not mentioned (e.g. iCloud) - I get the impression that Apple is trailing in the wake left by Google and MSoft, and are becoming more of a platform provider (e.g. iOS) than a serious competitor in the enterprise application market. As the article concludes, it's not going to be a choice between Google OR MSoft that users will have to make, but some combination of both.

Before the internet we learned from institutions, friends, family and co-workers.  Learning was a process largely influenced from local resources; schools, work, communities and civic activities.  We also learned from media fed to us and media we sought in books, videos and sound.  Our resources were limited by reach, access and choices.

 

Today the resources for learning are unlimited and for the most part free. Our reach to information is unlimited and access is 24/7  which expands the venue of choices.  As a result we are all learning what we didn’t know but want to know and we are being taught by others that do know.

A recent study in Memory & Cognition offers up an intriguing possibility about how to best learn: that learning with the expectation of teaching might be more effective than learning with the expectation that you'll be taking a test.

An interesting experiment in learning: the study found that students achieved better results if they thought they would have to teach the topic to another student, than learning with the expectation they would be taking a test.


Perhaps the results are not too profound - if you're teaching you need to know far more about your subject than can be revealed in a test.

A study of a strategy consulting company shows that junior and mid-level consultants who use social information from a KM system are promoted more quickly because they are able to build a network and connect to key people in the firm.


They also had access to experts they would otherwise find difficult to approach.


That's all fine, but tying the use of a knowledge management system to career advancement is in my opinion a narrow approach.


The most important source of competitive advantage for modern organizations is its ability to find, share and act on the right knowledge. Social learning and the exchange of knowledge is not something that happens in a closed ecosystem inside the organizational boundaries. Furthermore, knowledge sharing shouldn't be considered as merely a smart career move - benefiting only egoistic 


The objective should always the creation of an adaptive organization where people connect and participate in knowledge flows. It is this opportunity to see many different perspectives, continually challenge our thinking and come up with new ideas, new approaches that will help us to become even more effective in times of change.
