How To Capture Ideas Visually With The iPad

How To Capture Ideas Visually With The iPad | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

"Visual recording is what it sounds like it’d be. As opposed to recording audio, visual recording captures visuals, though not necessarily in photographic form. The process of visually capturing ideas with the iPad isn’t terribly complex in concept. If you can think of concept-mapping, you’ve halfway there."

I am not a doodler, though my video work obviously requires thinking visually.  I am exploring the world of visual notetaking which has always fascinated me, plus I've seen several people  using sketches on Periscope videos to communicate concepts on the new platform. Looks like fun, either by hand or with apps.

How Does Your Boss See You?: Proof That Principals Value Librarians

How Does Your Boss See You?: Proof That Principals Value Librarians | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

Principals value their librarians. They also want them to be more visible leaders.

Those are just two of the interesting findings from a recent survey of 102 media specialists and 67 principals. In fact, 90 percent of the administrators that we surveyed think we have a positive impact in schools—and a large number also feel that our jobs are important.

Are Librarians Still Important? |

Are Librarians Still Important? | | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

"The link between strong school library programs and student achievement is well documented. Today's librarian is less a stern guardian of the collection and more like a curator, eager to share resources she has found and the skills it takes to distinguish good information from bad. "As certified librarians with a master's degree, our focus is on teaching our students," says Young. "If a principal understands that, that's a huge hurdle [overcome] right there."

Being a Digital Native Isn’t Enough

Being a Digital Native Isn’t Enough | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

It is our role as teachers to help students develop the skills to problem solve independently and collaboratively use 21st-century skills while not relying on technology to do all of the thinking for them. Just because these students are digital natives, does not mean that they do not need guidance to navigate the digital world–both in terms of learning how to discern important and relevant information from a large swath of data, and also to be able to inquire and solve problems that take time, thought, and energy.

Digital Literacies and Web Literacies: What's the Difference? | DMLcentral

Digital Literacies and Web Literacies: What's the Difference? | DMLcentral | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

I’m currently iterating some work around Web Literacies for the Mozilla Foundation (you can see the latest version of my thinking here). Perhaps the biggest consideration when dealing with so-called ‘New’ Literacies is distinguishing them from one another, so what I want to consider in this post is the relationship between Digital literacies and Web literacies. Aren’t they just synonyms?

The topic of digital literacies was the focus of my doctoral thesis, which is available to read online at neverendingthesis.com. The conclusion I came to after delving deeply into the research was that we need to always talk about literacies in their plurality and that there are broadly eight essential elements to digital literacies. My question when it comes to Web Literacies, therefore, is whether (a) they constitute a subset of Digital Literacies, (b) they are wholly distinct from Digital Literacies, or (c) there is some overlap between the two. These three positions are represented by the graphic at the top of this post.

Teachers Guide to The 21st Century Learning Model : Connected Learning

Teachers Guide to The 21st Century Learning Model : Connected Learning | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

Why connected learning

Connected learning is a necessity in this digital age. More and more of our students learning, attention, and access to information is taking place outside of classrooms and through online networks and exchanges. Connected learning, however, can help them cultivate the skills necessary for fulfilling adult lives and careers and that formal instruction alone could not afford.
