Libraries and Makerspaces: a match made in heaven

Libraries and Makerspaces: a match made in heaven | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

Every discussion of libraries in the age of austerity always includes at least one blowhard who opines, "What do we need libraries for? We've got the Internet now!"

Facepalm.

The problem is that Mr. Blowhard has confused a library with a book depository. Now, those are useful, too, but a library isn't just (or even necessarily) a place where you go to get books for free. Public libraries have always been places where skilled information professionals assisted the general public with the eternal quest to understand the world. Historically, librarians have sat at the coalface between the entire universe of published material and patrons, choosing books with at least a colorable claim to credibility, carefully cataloging and shelving them, and then assisting patrons in understanding how to synthesize the material contained therein.

I believe libraries are more important than ever--both for helping students learn to find and evaluate resources online as well as for helping to narrow the digital divide. Having said that, I do agree that libraries are--and need to be--in a state of great change. Exciting times!

Lucy Beaton's curator insight, February 24, 2013 6:11 PM

White Paper: Project-Based vs. Problem-Based Learning: Which Is Better for the Common Core?

White Paper: Project-Based vs. Problem-Based Learning: Which Is Better for the Common Core? | The Slothful Cybrarian | Scoop.it

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) place an emphasis on process, not just content. Yes, teaching content knowledge is important, but it's even more important to teach the learning process, so students become independent learners who can obtain knowledge on their own. After all, gathering knowledge is a skill that students will need in the future, when there no longer is a teacher "giving them" the facts.

Karen Bonanno's curator insight, February 25, 2013 3:31 PM

Their verdict: Both project-based learning and problem-based learning are highly effective ways to bring the Common Core State Standards alive in your classroom. Although some educators argue that one way is more authentic or rigorous than the other, it really just depends on how it is done.
