Six Top Interior Designers on the Highlights at The Salon: Art + Design

Six Top Interior Designers on the Highlights at The Salon: Art + Design | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

by Mieke Ten Have

The Salon: Art + Design, which opens to the public today, is the sister fair to the Paris Biennale and brings with it 56 of the most distinguished high-design dealers, including Axel Vervoordt, Galerie kreo, and Carpenters Workshop. While the work on display ranges from the eighteenth century to contemporary, Salon’s strength lies in its expansive 20th-century offerings. Although the Salon’s blockbuster offering is often art, the innovative and beautiful furniture are the real stars of the show. We asked six top interior designers to take us on a tour of what they’re most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Salon.

The Salon: Art + Design Returns, Mixing Historic with Contemporary | Artinfo | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

NEW YORK — The Salon: Art + Design show returns to the Park Avenue Armory this month, replete with nine tours being led by top designers including Muriel Brandolini, Robert Couturier and Rafael de Cardenas among others, each with a view to point out the current trends in art and design that influence their design aesthetics.

The Salon plays host to the world’s leading exhibitors in fine and decorative arts and design from 1890 to the present, and this year’s roster of exhibitors includes more than 50 dealers and galleries from nine countries, who are bringing with them a wide range of items from 18th century French furniture to Art Deco, to 20th century and contemporary art and design, along with major works of ethnographic art and antiquities

“The Salon is the only fair that reflects the way that people live and collectors collect,” said Jill Bokor, executive director of the fair, which is produced by Sanford Smith in association with the Syndicat National des Antiquaires. “The mix of historic design with contemporary art, the pairing of an antiquity and a sofa made in 2014 is precisely what discerning collectors and influencers seek.”

Among those making their debut at the fair are DeLorenzo Gallery and Jousse Entreprise, while returning exhibitors include leading Paris Deco galleries Vallois and L’Arc en Seine. Galerie Downtown returns with a selection of furniture by Charlotte Perriand, while Galeries Beres, Boulakia and Le Minotaure are once again bringing a stellar range of modern art.

The Salon: Art + Design runs from November 13 to 17 at the Park Avenue Armory

Syndicat National des Antiquaires 's insight:

We are proud to announce our first participation at The Salon: Art + Design in New York. The fair will run from 14 till 17 November 2014 at the Park Avenue Armory.

Our booth will convey the universal and timeless use of form language, in archaeological pieces through modern day design. It is interesting to see how a pure use of lines and forms has captivated designers, artists and craftsmen, resulting in form language that has transgressed time and geographical boundaries.

We present a rare prototype of the well-known “Egyptian chair” designed in 1928 by Mogens Lassen, a pioneer of Danish Modernism.  His well-proportioned designs added a new dimension to the modernist movement due to their simplicity and craftsmanship.
Another important piece is a painted relief (1975) from the Dutch ZERO-artist Jan Schoonhoven. He fully accepted the contemporary viewpoint  that a work of art was just an object which established itself as art within a specific cultural context. So he created simple, geometrical white painted reliefs, based on the same non-expressionist principle.
One of our archeological highlights is an architectural ornament from Yemen (5th Century BC), a motif borrowed from the Egyptian false doors. It’s a stone imitation of the window frames featured in the South Arabia's earlier wooden buildings
All pieces form a unity through the universality of proportion and form.

The Salon à New York : de plus en plus américain

The Salon à New York : de plus en plus américain | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

Adolf Loos at Salon Art & Design

Adolf Loos at Salon Art & Design | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

One of the most fascinating exhibitors at the Salon Art & Design is Yves Macaux, whose gallery in Brussels specializes in early Viennese design and turn-of-the-century Belgium design. This time, he has a strong representation of furniture and objects by Adolf Loos, the Viennese architect who is mostly known for his essay "Ornament and Crime," and who was inspired by English design culture, when promoting his campaign against what he perceived as "trendy" Viennese design.

Junko Mori at the Salon Art & Design

Junko Mori at the Salon Art & Design | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

The greatest triumph last night at the opening night of the Salon Art & Design. The Fair is open to the public starting today until Monday evening, and I am going to share some of my thoughts as I plan on attending the show everyday, as there is so much of the greatest design to see and experience. Adrian Sassoon is always a must stop at the Salon. I particularly loved the pieces by Japanese artist Junko Mori who crafts metal the way no other artist does. She forges steel, iron, and silver into poetic and somewhat mystical forms, which are sensual and clearly come from her personal observation of nature.

Visiting the Salon Art + Design Fair

Visiting the Salon Art + Design Fair | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

by Rachel Small
Looking over the drill hall of the Park Avenue Armory is an antique Tiffany clock, its face marked with Roman numerals and its hands like pokers. When it struck 5pm last night, well dressed ladies and gentlemen began streaming into the space, which was lavishly adorned for the third annual Salon Art + Design Fair. An elegant piece of decoration itself, the Tiffany clock was the perfect timepiece to count the moments as dealers snapped into action while visitors dispersed into the three aisles of booths. The fair's emphasis is on contemporary objects, although select merchants specialize in pieces from the 20th, 19th, and 18th centuries. Wandering about we overheard a few telling snippets: "But it is authentic?" "A lot of these things, prices are negotiable," "It's created as a miracle of nature in China...a lost art," and "It's lovely, but would it go with the chairs?"

A sister fair to the Paris Biennale, Salon distinguishes itself by offering a simple visual splendor that is undermined in many other art fairs by flashy, attention-seeking curatorial practices. And that's on purpose: The 55 booths at Salon are decorated so one might be able to picture their own dream living room, not an ideal art collection. While the fair is the only one to include fine art and design objects, various displays seamlessly integrate both elements into mock interiors. The most animated piece by far was Moderne Gallery's nearly seven-foot-tall sculpture that resembled a molecular structure, titled Diamond, which balanced on one pivot and rocked back and forth when pushed, startling passerby who thought it was toppling over.

Fair organizers Jill Bokor and Jen Roberts were busy attending to last minute arrangements opening night, so we caught them on the phone a few weeks in advance. With Bokor coming from a background as the publisher of Art+Auction and Roberts having co-founded Modern, they collectively have an understanding of every aspect driving the design market. "A big part of the buying is done by designers for their clients for projects they're working on. This is a can't-miss in the architecture and design community" says Bokor. "Also, the fashion world is becoming interconnected with this sort of design, and we're getting a lot of traction for fashion figures who see this as a very chic and important show."

"So many fashion designers are tastemakers creating unique designs and unique interiors and they want to live uniquely," adds Roberts. "This is a place where you go to find things that you're not going to see everywhere.

Galerie Boulakia, The Salon: Art+Design Chagall, Ernst, Léger, Mitchell...à New York

Galerie Boulakia, The Salon: Art+Design Chagall, Ernst, Léger, Mitchell...à New York | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it

by Richard Rabel, interior designer and art advisor
I’ve been on the lookout for interesting chairs for a new project in New York and my timing could not be better with the last of the year’s major art fairs in New York opening last night.  The Salon Art + Design which principally showcases work from the 20th and 21st century (totally my thing!), is one of the most interesting fairs on this side of the pond since many of the exhibiting dealers are from Continental Europe and rarely exhibit in the USA outside of this Fair.

So between the ooh lalala’s and the “c’est magnifiques” and plenty of air kisses, these are some of the chairs that caught my eye:

Galerie L’Arc en Seine had this par of splendid Pierre Chareau fauteuils from 1938  (image above).  Can’t get enough of their nod to Cubism with their angular geometric form. (...)

HIGHENDWEEKLY.com Weekend Shopping at The Salon NY | The Salon Art+Design | Scoop.it
The second edition of The Salon: Art + Design didn't disappoint at all. It is quite possible that it was even better than the inauguration last year. Sandford L. Smith and his associates welcomed some of the best dealers in the world back to The Park Avenue Armory, and it was a delight to discover the most outstanding and rarest works of art in the market - many of which have not been seen for a very long time, nor ever been seen before. Opening night, for me, is mostly about networking with the dealers, and socializing with my peers in the industry, therefore, I had to return to the fair yesterday morning in order to do some shopping, and quite frankly, at times, furniture gawking. During my shopping run, I was surprised and a bit taken back when legendary artist and renowned dealer Barry Friedman told me that as of January 2014, he will be retiring after 48 years in the business. A huge hole will be left by his absence in the industry, but it is important to note that Friendman Banta will still be in operation.

The Salon is open until Monday, November 18th. The schedule and location of the fair can be found in my previous post. If you are an art and design lover, collector, or an enthusiast, this fair couldn't be a better one visit
