The WebP image format is a new format derived from the WebM technology and the VP8 codec. It allows an image to retain all its quality while reducing its overall size and making it possible to load images before the browser has finished decoding them.Support for “decode as you load” image display will be made available in Chrome as early as version 12. As with any new format, however, WebP must face the challenges of convincing the masses to adopt. Google, as usual, is trying to bribe everyone with features.
The next time you turn on your television tuning in to your favorite TV show, a great movie or perhaps the news, listen carefully to the background music. Then turn off the sound for a few seconds. How much of the ambiance did the program lose? Including a music score to your videos can really add impact, emotion and professionalism to your videos.
The Public Domain Calculators available on this website answer the question of whether a certain work or other subject matter vested with copyright or neighboring rights (related rights) has fallen into the public domain in a given European country.
The songs are completely free. No strings attached. But more importantly we want your songs and raps. We also want you to take one of our songs on this site and re-record it, re-write it, mash it up, hack it to bits, tear it apart, then put it back together again. Click the button to submit and we'll post them. The songs can be about anything: local issues, national, international, whatever. We don't care. We just want music about what's going on. If you're in a band and you cover one of our songs, send it to us. If you play a cover of "Which Side Are you On Boy?" we'll post that too.
Getty Images contributors urged not to sign new contractsBritish Journal of PhotographyFor example, image places in the rights-managed collection could be moved to a royalty-free model if it has not been licensed in three years.
The Supreme Court will decide whether public domain works can be pushed back into the copyright closet. Advocacy groups say that public access to some of the greatest novels and compositions of the 20th-century is at stake in this case, as is the First Amendment.

Google built the royalty-free WebM video format with the sophisticated VP8 compression technology that it obtained in its 2009 acquisition of On2. In addition to advancing the goal of open video for the Web, the search giant also used On2 technology to build a new image format called WebP with the aim of reducing page load time by increasing the efficiency of image compression.
In spite of its promise, the tag is one of the most controversial and contentious aspects of the HTML5 specification. The controversy stems over the various codecs that can be used with HTML5.
There are three different video codecs — or formats — that can be used with the tag. These formats are H.264, Ogg Theora and WebM. The technical merits of these formats vary — for what it is worth, H.264 tends to have the best size-to-quality ratio and has best support of commercial encoding, serving and processing tools. H.264 is also well-supported by hardware vendors and chipset makers.
The problem with H.264 is that it is controlled by the MPEG LA, and as such, needs to be licensed for use. The licensing costs don’t mean much to the average video consumer, but could potentially cost video producers or software makers lots of money. Ogg Theora and WebM are royalty-free, which means that software developers and content distributors can use the codec without having to pay licensing fees.
The Unlicense is a template for disclaiming copyright interest in software you've written; in other words, it is a template for dedicating your software to the public domain. It combines a copyright waiver patterned after the very successful public domain SQLite project with the no-warranty statement from the widely-used MIT/X11 license.
These days, patent lawsuits have become the big guns that tech companies use to battle their competitors. But when it comes to Google's WebM video technology, the company is trying to establish a neutral zone of patent peace. Today, Google is announcing a program called the WebM Community Cross License initiative designed to dispel patent-related threats looming over freely usable video technology for the Web.
There are a number of websites which maintain databases of freely downloadable audiobooks. The audiobooks that are available as free downloads are often classic titles that have entered into the public domain and are no longer under copyright law.
In recognition of the growing importance that the Internet plays in the generation and consumption of video content, MPEG intends to develop a new video compression standard in line with the expected usage models of the Internet. The new standard is intended to achieve substantially better compression performance than that offered by MPEG-2 and possibly comparable to that offered by the AVC Baseline Profile. MPEG will issue a call for proposals on video compression technology at the end of its upcoming meeting in March 2011 that is expected to lead to a standard falling under ISO/IEC “Type-1 licensing”, i.e. intended to be “royalty free”.
