Mitt Romney and the myth of self-created millionaires

Mitt Romney and the myth of self-created millionaires | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

A century ago, entrepreneurs sought to pass themselves off as parasites: they adopted the style and manner of the titled, rentier class. Today the parasites claim to be entrepreneurs.

Stephen King: Tax Me, for F@%&’s Sake! | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

Mitt Romney has said, in effect, “I’m rich and I don’t apologize for it.” Nobody wants you to, Mitt. What some of us want—those who aren’t blinded by a lot of bullshit persiflage thrown up to mask the idea that rich folks want to keep their damn money—is for you to acknowledge that you couldn’t have made it in America without America. That you were fortunate enough to be born in a country where upward mobility is possible (a subject upon which Barack Obama can speak with the authority of experience), but where the channels making such upward mobility possible are being increasingly clogged. That it’s not fair to ask the middle class to assume a disproportionate amount of the tax burden. Not fair? It’s un-f--king-American, is what it is.

Why Do They Hate Us?

Why Do They Hate Us? | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

In a crisp three-and-a-half pages, Rifaat lays out a trifecta of sex, death, and religion, a bulldozer that crushes denial and defensiveness to get at the pulsating heart of misogyny in the Middle East. There is no sugarcoating it. They don't hate us because of our freedoms, as the tired, post-9/11 American cliché had it. We have no freedoms because they hate us, as this Arab woman so powerfully says.

Yes: They hate us. It must be said.

I Paid a Bribe and Similar Corruption-Exposing Sites Spread

I Paid a Bribe and Similar Corruption-Exposing Sites Spread | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

The going rate to get a child who has already passed the entrance requirements into high school in Nairobi, Kenya? 20,000 shillings.

The expense of obtaining a driver’s license after having passed the test in Karachi, Pakistan? 3,000 rupees.

Such is the price of what Swati Ramanathan calls “retail corruption,” the sort of nickel-and-dime bribery, as opposed to large-scale graft, that infects everyday life in so many parts of the world.

MindMixer & The Future of Urban Democracy

MindMixer & The Future of Urban Democracy | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

The basic unit of the MindMixer is the idea; users submit ideas under categories such as land use, transportation, public health or “visions for the future”. Other users then support or comment on these ideas, bringing the most innovative and pragmatic ideas to the forefront of discussion.

When the city implements an idea generated by the platform, it is proudly displayed along with the names of those citizens by whom the idea was proposed. Don’t be fooled by the forum-like atmosphere, this is an instrument for action.

The hackers at Anonymous promised a big release of hacked information on Friday, and at least part of it is a recording of FBI agents on a conference call with Scotland Yard talking about their mutual investigation into Anonymous. A released audio recording contains about 16 minutes of agents chatting about what evidence they’ve got on already-arrested hackers.

“Do you have plants in your home?” he asks impatiently. “Do you water them every day? Why do you water them? Because,” he goes on, “otherwise they’re ratty little dead things.” That’s why these forgotten cultural icons are important ... "If we restore an early 20th-century subway station, we don’t imagine Electricitè de France will ask us to transform 200,000 volts to 20,000. No, we just want to get as close as possible to a functioning state.”

Internet Research & Ethics: The Case of the London Riots Analysis

Internet Research & Ethics: The Case of the London Riots Analysis | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

In the summer of 2011, London erupted in flames. Now, it's not the first time the city has burned; it's had a rich history of conflagration within its walls and revolt in its urban sprawl. But this time it was different: the source of the unrest echoed the sounds of virtual revolutions around the globe -- inequality, incomprehension, inefficacy -- yet like the people on the streets of Tehran and Cairo, the Londoners who chose to riot also chose to leave an incredibly rich trail of information in their wakes.

By using social media to organize and report, to promote and to publicize, they gave curious academics and other interested parties a trove of pickings that can be analyzed for impressive insights.

Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1% | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

In terms of income equality, America lags behind any country in the old, ossified Europe that President George W. Bush used to deride. Among our closest counterparts are Russia with its oligarchs and Iran. While many of the old centers of inequality in Latin America, such as Brazil, have been striving in recent years, rather successfully, to improve the plight of the poor and reduce gaps in income, America has allowed inequality to grow.

President Obama AP Luncheon Speech Video April 3, 2012: ASNE Convention Keynote Address | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

“It doesn’t make us weaker when we guarantee basic security for the elderly or the sick or those who are actively looking for work. What makes us weaker is when fewer and fewer people can afford to buy the goods and services our businesses sell, or when entrepreneurs don’t have the financial security to take a chance and start a new business. What drags down our entire economy is when there’s an ever-widening chasm between the ultrarich and everybody else.”

Arrests Sow Mistrust Inside a Clan of Hackers

Arrests Sow Mistrust Inside a Clan of Hackers | The Revolution Will Be Scooped | Scoop.it

For months, The Real Sabu, as he called himself on Twitter, boasted, cursed and egged on his followers to take part in computer attacks against private companies and government agencies worldwide.

It turns out that Sabu had become an informant for federal law enforcement authorities. On Tuesday, in what could be one of the biggest breakthroughs in the government crackdown on a loose, large confederation of politically inspired “hacktivists,” he was unmasked and revealed to have helped the authorities catch several fellow hackers in Europe and the United States.

This Is What It Felt Like to Get Arrested at Last Week’s Occupy Oakland Riots

The video’s not quite as jaw-dropping as those in last year’s pepper-spraying cop meme, but it sure looks like it hurt when they grabbed the one guy by the straps on his bike helmet. Somehow, hearing Jingle Bells in the background towards the end just makes the whole two-minutes haunting.

It’s hard to watch this video and not think about the increasingly visible race awareness within (and without) Occupy as a whole.

This bill, passed late last night in a 93-7 vote, declares the entire USA to be a "battleground" upon which U.S. military forces can operate with impunity, overriding Posse Comitatus and granting the military the unchecked power to arrest, detain, interrogate and even assassinate U.S. citizens with impunity.
