More Mindfulness, Less Meditation

More Mindfulness, Less Meditation | The Resilient Activist | Scoop.it
The practice has benefits, but it is far more effective as a technique of self-management than as a means of personal transformation, Tony Schwartz writes in the Life@Work column.
Neva Welton's insight:

I so appreciate author Tony Schwartz's perspective on the terms mindfulness and meditation, which so often get misused and used interchangeably.  In the day, we used to just say "self-awareness," which I still think is a wonderful term for growing our ability to become less reactive andm ore response to all of our life's experiences. .

ECOBUDDHISM :: Only love can save us from climate change | The Resilient Activist | Scoop.it
Neva Welton's insight:

Activists can caught in an "either/or" mentality when it comes to solving some of the most challenging issues of our time. Either you love and meditate your way to success or you demonstrate on the front lines. I've always beleived it's about balance. Love this interview with Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, one of the world's leading spiritual teachers. "

Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene

Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene | The Resilient Activist | Scoop.it
Many thinkers have argued that studying philosophy is learning how to die. If that’s true, then we have entered humanity’s most philosophical age.
Neva Welton's insight:

I was very moved by this opinion piece by Roy Scranton. I tend to think we can find more creative solutions for environmental challenges if we utilize philosophical and spiritual teachings of love and nonattachment, and learn to face the inevitable impermanence of all.

From the article: "The choice is a clear one. We can continue acting as if tomorrow will be just like yesterday, growing less and less prepared for each new disaster as it comes, and more and more desperately invested in a life we can’t sustain. Or we can learn to see each day as the death of what came before, freeing ourselves to deal with whatever problems the present offers without attachment or fear."
