Brief commentary on "hybridism" or "foreignness" as being a theme through all his three of his novels. Hamid's comment on the film and the political situation in Pakistan currently (election time) also are a little more revealing; "It's basically just a book about tea and dinner but it becomes this other thing through this High Noon camera work, with tumbleweed and bats flying around, and people lurking," and "Imran Khan at least feels sincere, he says. And he likes his "post-ethnic status - Pashtun origin, Punjab-raised". "So many Pakistanis look like that now. Punjab with Baloch, Pashtun with Sindh ... " This national and ethnic ambiguity, a blurring of identities, may be part of the movements of a globalised community and a post-colonial tension, where a "western/eastern" education and the backward searching nostalgia of an illusory unified nation clash? As he is quoted, '"I used to think when I was younger I should try to be more like people around me. Now I've come to realise we're all becoming more marginalised and eventually people like me are going to be more common. The future of the planet is mongrel," he says with a laugh. "And the sooner that happens the better."'

Regardless that this is a film review, some interesting commentary in regard to "roots and origins" in comparison to "fundamentals" and "fundamentalists". QHOTE: "This film takes the nonsense rhetoric of "us versus them" and blows it out of the water. Instead, you're forced to think of the world in a more sophisticated way: who am I in a world of us vs. them? Do I have to take a side? The answer isn't always no, but it isn't necessarily yes. And the movie gets close to the question, even if it doesn't necessarily have the answer." Is the novel's theme focused on taking sides, or about the dilemmas that often force us to reflect on what makes "us" the moral or immoral beings that we may be or become?

Draws on "a postcolonial form of politics that retrieves the specificity of local Muslim life in Pakistan" - note the spatial oppositions and juxtapositions of "critical localism" with "globalisation" - flight to nostalgia (and perhaps agrarian idylls when faced with "American capitalism"). Provides some critical structure for Post-colonial analysis.

Worth reading for some insight? "it’s important to remember that the values that Changez has to consider are South Asian rather than solely Pakistani. The different paths for economy and society in India and Pakistan since 1947 were to a large extent determined by the imperial decisions of UK governments in the 1930s and 1940s and the development of US foreign policy since the 1950s. Mira Nair is reported as saying that she hoped that her film would “start a conversation”. I hope that it does and that it swiftly moves on from the problems of the romance and the CIA surveillance of Lahore to consider the issues about Anglo-American capitalism, alienation and the South Asian family."

Mira Nair comment on her own film is revealing, "It is not a 9/11 movie, even though the fall of the Twin Towers is a powerful catalyst for what happens later. I would say it is a human thriller, a love story, a coming-of-age story." Such a strong representation on post 9/11 events? Almost a denial that seems to reinforce the nature of film adaptions of novels. Is "9/11" just a catalyst, a moment in world history and Hamid's novel another as a literary event? This focal distancing appears to depend on where the watcher and the reader stands?

learnink learnink's insight:

Interesting commentary on TRF and ideological and theological connections to the Boston Marathon Bombing. Fascinating how quickly reader's can make a connection between a work of fiction and reality with even the barest of facts. Is TRF an Occam's Razor? Literary cultures (English ones in particular) are also bound to an ideological and linguistic context, and TRF is no different, other than it fictiionally explores and challenges orthodox views and explanation about extremist behaviour from an enlightening point of view - that of an outsider, who tried to be an insider and failed. Vicarious explanations (fictional lives of others) do illuminate a solution process, i.e. we all want to explain the 9/11 infamy or the Boston Marathon outrage in some rational form that comforts us, that conforms to the principle of parsimony and agrees with our cultural orthodoxy. Changez' flaws as an individual should not be ignored as they entertain as much as they inform.
