John Ward's insight:

It is fundamental to the Museum's mission to provide access to the Museum's collection and promote appreciation of its significance.

Among the primary means for achieving this goal is the presentation of exhibitions of its own works and those borrowed from other owners. The Museum shall provide additional access to its collections through study rooms and loans to other institutions. The Museum shall support continuing scholarly investigation and research in order to document, publish, and advance understanding of the Museum's collections as well as contribute to broader academic and public discourses.

Famine, the Black Death, and health in fourteenth-century London
John Ward's insight:

In the first half of the fourteenth century two catastrophes struck the population of Europe: the Great Famine and the Black Death. The latter has been extensively studied, but much less is known about the biological effects of the Great Famine. A large assemblage of skeletal remains from one of the Black Death burial grounds, the Royal Mint cemetery in London, provides a unique opportunity to investigate these effects by analyzing the teeth of individuals who survived the famine but died during the Black Death.

The Material Culture of Magic - Call for Chapters
John Ward's insight:

Call For Chapters - The Material Culture of MagicBook project, ed. by Dr Antje Bosselmann-Ruickbie and Dr Leo RuickbieMagic is a wide field of research comprising what we might call the occult, paranormal events, anomalous experience, spirituality and other phenomena throughout human history. However, research has often been focused more narrowly on the historical analysis of written sources, or theanthropology and occasionally sociology of practitioners and their communities, for example. What isoften overlooked are the physical artefacts of magic themselves.

John Ward's insight:

We began by examining the high-resolution photographs, drawings, and detailed descriptions and dimensions of the excavated pieces provided to us by Wachsmann.  These data formed the basis for the as-found 3D model of the ancient ship.  From the basic as-found model, we could output the files for viewing with virtual reality (VR) software and allow Wachsmann (and colleagues) to examine the ship as though holding a single object in their hands. The VR version allowed nuances of the object to be examined close-up, it could be rotated it in any direction, and the ship could be viewed from all angles to compare against photos, providing an exciting and effective way to study ancient objects.

Dark Impulses: Magical Innovations

John Ward's insight:

This was a book that upon first reading it I figured that it deserves a three star rating, but as I continued on I found enough useful information that it was deserving of a four star review. The book “Becoming Magick” is really geared towards the more advanced practitioner yet I was able to pull out several things that I would find useful and those things will find themselves copied into my notes for further use.

The Safari Collection | Giraffe Manor | The Related Researches & News of Dr John Ward | Scoop.it
John Ward's insight:

Giraffe Manor is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings: characterful, picturesque, and enveloped in history like the foliage creeping over its brickwork. Set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi and with verdant green gardens, sunny terraces and delightful courtyards, it harks back to the 1930s when European visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris. With its stately façade and elegant interior, Giraffe Manor has an extraordinary appeal. Guests remark that it’s like walking into the film Out of Africa: indeed, one of its six suites is named after the author Karen Blixen, and includes the Danish writers’ effects.

Gebel el Silsila Survey Project | The Related Researches & News of Dr John Ward | Scoop.it
John Ward's insight:

Oh dear, how does one begin to summarize 2 months, almost 9 weeks, of survey work? This first half of the 2014 season’s fieldwork has brought an incredible amount of new material, knowledge and understanding of the site in general, and chronologically span over 10 000 years of history. Epigraphy, topography, ceramic analysis, geological (surface) analysis, lithic studies, rock art recording, ‘contemporary’ epigraphic documentation (early travellers, etc.), quarry marks, team marks, extraction techniques, transportation routes; these (along with many more) are all topics that have been incorporated into the larger umbrella of our comprehensive archaeological study of Gebel el Silsila this season.
