The Market Doesn’t Solve Problems; People Do — Think Libertarian

The Market Doesn't Solve Problems; People Do - Think Libertarian - Medium
It is wrongly accepted by many liberals (i.e., libertarians) that most, if not all, social problems can be “solved by th…
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

The free market is not superior because it offers solutions. It is superior because its basis is freedom, a freedom that is used by individuals to find new ways for them that are in harmony with the interests of their fellow men. Of course, there are many problems and abuses with the market, but entrepreneurs — if not prevented from entering the marketplace by governments — seek to solve these problems in the pursuit of profits. Through these entrepreneurs, the market is a process that tends to satisfy the most urgent, not-yet-satisfied, needs of the consumers.

Ayn Rand’s Theory of Rights: The Moral Foundation of a Free Society - The Objective Standard

Ayn Rand’s Theory of Rights: The Moral Foundation of a Free Society - The Objective Standard | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it
Examines Ayn Rand's theory of rights in contrast to theories of God-given, government-granted, and "natural" rights.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

Morality or ethics, observed Rand, “is a code of values to guide man’s choices and actions—the choices and actions that determine the purpose and the course of his life.”24 And the first step toward understanding a code of values, she reasoned, is to understand the nature of values. Thus, Rand’s approach to morality began not with the question: Which of the existing codes should I accept?—but rather with the questions: “What are values? Why does man need them?”25 These questions directed her thinking away from the established views and toward the facts of reality.

Mídia Sem Máscara - O que realmente pensam os conservadores | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it

O argumento completo em defesa da liberdade | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it

Rodrigo Constantino: Liberais e Conservadores | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it

Gay Rights: A Libertarian Approach

Gay Rights: A Libertarian Approach | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it
In this essay, Ralph Raico examines the libertarian case for gay rights and describes how that case was expressed in the Libertarian Party’s positions.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

We hold that only actions which infringe the rights of others can properly be termed crimes. We favor the repeal of all federal, state and local laws creating “crimes” without victims. In particular, we advocate: … . (b) the repeal of all laws regarding consensual sexual relations, including prostitution and solicitation, and the immediate cessation of state oppression of homosexual men and women, that at last they be accorded their full rights as individuals … (e) the use of executive pardon to free all those presently incarcerated for the commission of these “crimes.”

We call for the end of Defense Department policy of discharging armed forces personnel for homosexual conduct when such conduct does not interfere with their assigned duties. We further call for the retraction of all less-than-honorable discharges previously assigned for such reasons and the deletion of such information from military personnel files.

Liberalism, by Ludwig von Mises (1927) | Foundation for Economic Education

Liberalism, by Ludwig von Mises (1927) | Foundation for Economic Education | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

The social order created by the philosophy of the Enlightenment assigned supremacy to the common man. In his capacity as a consumer, the “regular fellow” was called upon to determine ultimately what should be produced, in what quantity and of what quality, by whom, how, and where; in his capacity as a voter, he was sovereign in directing his nation’s policies. In the precapitalistic society those had been paramount who had the strength to beat their weaker fellows into submission. The much decried “mechanism” of the free market leaves only one way open to the acquisition of wealth, viz., to succeed in serving the consumers in the best possible and cheapest way. To this “democracy” of the market corresponds, in the sphere of the conduct of affairs of state, the system of representative government. The greatness of the period between the Napoleonic Wars and the first World War consisted precisely in the fact that the social ideal after the realization of which the most eminent men were striving was free trade in a peaceful world of free nations. It was an age of unprecedented improvement in the standard of living for a rapidly increasing population. It was the age of liberalism.

Camille Paglia: “O pós-modernismo é uma praga para mente e coração” - Setor VIP | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into."  Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

How the horrors of war led to the birth of American conservatism.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

The clearest difference between the two conservatisms arose in foreign policy: humanist conservatives, Christian or otherwise, were less apt to support military interventions or restrict citizens’ civil liberties in the name of fighting communism. “A ‘preventive’ war, whether or not it might be successful in the field—and that is a question much in doubt—would be morally ruinous to us,” Kirk wrote in A Program for Conservatives, his 1954 sequel to The Conservative Mind.

Bruce L. Benson joins us for a discussion on the idea of law without a government. How would such a system work? How did the law as we know it today come about?
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

A modern example. In Japan, if an individual commits a crime against another individual, and that individual gets caught, he – typically a representative of that individual, someone in his family perhaps or something like that, will go to the victim and say, “Boy, this guy is really sorry for what he did. Is there something he could do to alleviate your suffering?”

Ayn Rand on Fascism

Ayn Rand on Fascism | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it
Smith explores Rand’s contention that America was sliding down a slippery slope to fascism.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

Observe that both “socialism” and “fascism” involve the issue of property rights. The right to property is the right of use and disposal. Observe the difference in those two theories: socialism negates private property rights altogether, and advocates “the vesting of ownership and control” in the community as a whole, i.e., in the state; fascism leavesownership in the hands of private individuals, but transfers control of the property to the government.

Ownership without control is a contradiction in terms: it means “property,” without the right to use it or to dispose of it. It means that the citizens retain the responsibility of holding property, without any of its advantages, while the government acquires all the advantages without any of the responsibility.

Cicero almost single-handedly staved off the destruction of the Roman Republic, even in the face of assured destruction. That makes him a hero.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

By Cicero’s time, the place was rife with corruption and power lust. The outward appearances of a republic were undermined daily by civil strife and a growing welfare-warfare state. Many who gave lip service in public to republican values were privately conniving to secure power or wealth through political connections. Others were corrupted or bribed into silence by government handouts. The republic was on life support and Cicero’s voice was soon to be drowned out by a rising tide of political intrigue, violence, and popular apathy.

Here's a Libertarian Definition Compared to the Left and Right Wing

Here's a Libertarian Definition Compared to the Left and Right Wing | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it
A libertarian definition is not that hard to do compared to the other two parties. We're for freedom, they're for force, it's as simple as that.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

Unlike the left and right wing we believe in freedom on all issues not just a select few. We believe individuals should be free from government force and able to make their own personal and economic decisions. We believe that adults should be treated like adults and allowed to control their own lives. They should be able to consume what they want, choose who they marry, what kind of unregulated healthcare they buy, use any type of currency they choose, not be forced to pay income tax, and not be forced to fund wars. Live and let live is the most basic libertarian definition. - See more at: http://alibertarianfuture.com/define-libertarian/libertarian-definition-compared-left-right-wing/#sthash.7rFBHM1L.dpuf

The evils of government threaten all people, but ought to be particularly concerning to Christians. Libertarianism is the political answer.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

Also, as individuals, we are incapable of individually defending ourselves against foreign and domestic aggression, so the government can rightly raise a standing military and police force. To preserve liberty, the government must be able to defend against threats on liberty. Taxation should only be used to support these proper functions of government. Any further use of tax dollars is illegitimate and amounts to legalized plunder.

Self-Ownership: A Biography of Lysander Spooner

Lysander Spooner was an American legal theorist, abolitionist, and anarchist.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

He rejected the claim that people are adequately protected by the right to vote. Voting, he observed, “can be exercised only periodically; and the tyranny must at least be borne until the time for suffrage comes. Besides, when the suffrage is exercised, it gives no guaranty for the repeal of existing laws that are oppressive, and no security against the enactment of new ones that are equally so. The second body of legislators are liable to be just as tyrannical as the first. If it be said that the second body may be chosen for their integrity, the answer is, that the first were chosen for that very reason, and yet proved tyrants.”

Neither Left Nor Right | Foundation for Economic Education

Neither Left Nor Right | Foundation for Economic Education | the reality of my surroundings | Scoop.it
Rodrigo Gonçalves Da Silva's insight:

To him, communism, fascism, nazism, Fabianism, the welfare state—all egalitarianism—fit the definitive description that Plato, perhaps cynically, gave us centuries before any of these coercive systems were evolved:

The greatest principle of all is that nobody, whether male or female, should be without a leader. Nor should the mind of anybody be habituated to letting him do anything at all on his own initiative; neither out of zeal, nor even playfully. But in war as well as in the midst of peace—to his leader he shall direct his eye and follow him faithfully. And even in the smallest matter he should stand under leadership. For example, he should get up, or move, or wash, or take his meals . . . only if he has been told to do so. . . . In a word, he should teach his soul, by long habit, never to dream of acting independently, and, in fact, to become utterly incapable of it.

Ascending the Degradation

Libertarians reject this principle and in so doing are not to the right or left of authoritarians. They, as the human spirit they would free, ascend—are above—this degradation. Their position, if directional analogies are to be used, is up—in the sense that vapor from a muckheap rises to a wholesome atmosphere. If the idea of extremity is to be applied to a libertarian, let it be based on how extremely well he has shed himself of authoritarian beliefs.
