Food logos light up kids' 'pleasure' centers

Food logos light up kids' 'pleasure' centers | The Rambling Epicure | Scoop.it

This child's brain -- brought to you by McDonald's.

Finally, there's proof of what most parents already know: food ads work really well on kids.

Researchers have found the most popular food companies have branded the brains of young people in such a powerful and genetic way, just seeing a logo trips the pleasure and reward switches in their young heads.

This means, on cue, if they see certain company names, their appetite controls are triggered. Although the same doesn't happen with logos for items not connected to food -- say, BMW versus Rice Krispies. . . .

Food label language confusing: Greens

Food label language confusing: Greens | The Rambling Epicure | Scoop.it

A GREENS' bid to tighten food labelling laws went before the Federal Parliament for the third time this year on Monday.

The bill seeks to change current laws which allow some foods to be labelled "Made in Australia" when the food was grown overseas and re-packaged here.

Greens MP Adam Bandt read the bill in the House of Representatives. It is due for a second reading on Tuesday.

"The language (on food labels) is unnecessarily confusing," he said.

"We can have clear labelling that lets Australians know if they are buying Australian-grown food, and if that product has been processed in Australia."

While the 2008 Blewett Review recommended changes to food labelling laws and the government response said it would take action within two years, little has been done.

Various government ministers have said the issue requires the agreement of the states and that the government was working with the states, but no resolutions have been reached in the four years since the review was completed.

On the same day Mr Bandt again raised the issue, food labelling campaign group Australian Made Australia Grown released survey results revealing 40% of consumers surveyed found it hard to decipher the language on food labels.

11 Food-Based Campaign Promises That We Wish The Candidates Would Make

11 Food-Based Campaign Promises That We Wish The Candidates Would Make | The Rambling Epicure | Scoop.it

Finally, a bipartisan platform...

Do you hear that? It's the sound of millions upon millions of dollars being spent on campaign ads instead of, y'know, something useful. It's late September in an election year and with both parties' conventions now over, the 2012 Presidential Election is officially in full swing. Soon we'll be listening to the candidates debate each other on live TV while political operatives do everything they can to dig up as many closeted skeletons as possible. For now, though, we just have promises in the form of optimistic speeches and party platforms. Both parties want to jump-start the economy with new jobs, but how do they feel about free refills? I'm here to present 11 food-based campaign promises that I wish the candidates would make.
