Mark Edmundson's new book calls for renewed emphasis on teaching | Inside Higher Ed | The Principal's Page | Scoop.it

It’s a question many professors may be asking themselves this month, as they prepare for another academic year: “Why teach?”

Mark Edmundson, professor of English at the University of Virginia, answers the question in a new book, Why Teach? In Defense of a Real Education, out Tuesday from Bloomsbury.

But what is a real education – and why does it need defending?

Stop and think it!

Values, success and happiness

Liliana Martes's insight:

Is common that people don't think about themselves. Only make every day activities like robots, they love the routins and lose sight of what makes their happy what is the meaning of the things they do every day.

About me, it makes me happy to see the smiles of the children in my school every day. See he school and be proud to be better humans beings.

I enjoy traveling to differents cities and teaching adults, teenagers, librarians, teachers and childrens about the power of literature.

Work whit others and for others strengthens my life values: solidarity, perseverance, joy, friendship, respect and entrepreneurship.

Finally, the success or me is to enjoy every step you take  in your life to be happy.

What is authentic leadership? It continues to surprise me how many leaders attempt to be one way at work, while their “true” personality emerges outside of work.

Vocabulary: passion, inspire, unique, strengths, values, success

From video: How to Find and Do Work You Love (TED.com)

What are your unique strengths?

What are your values?

What are your experiences?  What are you good at?  What are you terrible at?

What makes you happy? Who/What inspires you?

What is the definition of success?

What does he mean, "climbing up the ladder?"  "Most of the people who haven't spent time figuring out what actually matters to them just keep reaching for something that doesn't mean anything to us but we are doing it because everyone said we are supposed to."

Now that you have reflected on your strengths, values, and experiences, is there a job or activity that fits well with you?
