In the USA only 30% to 40% of women who have a mastectomy undergo breast reconstruction surgery.

A study, published in JAMA Surgery, found that 58.4% of 485 patients surveyed decided not to undergo breast reconstruction surgery, citing such reasons as
- not wanting to have additional surgery (48.5%),
- it wasn’t important (33.8%),
- fear of implants (36.3%), and
- a concern about possible complications (33.6%).

Choice - being at choice, feeling like you have a choice, being supported in your choices - for a survivor to feel empowered, choice is a big part of it. Healthcare professionals, personal caregivers, family, friends, loved ones, and the media must reserve judgment. There is no right or wrong when it comes to what a patient decides.

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet.

Such a diet will result in the body burning fats rather than carbohydrates. We know that the primary nutrient to support brain function is glucose, which is the result of the breakdown of carbohydrates. A low-carbohydrate diet will result in minimal production of glucose. In the absence of carbohydrate to convert to glucose, the liver will convert fats into fatty acids and then into ketone bodies. The ketone bodies then pass into the brain and replace glucose as its energy source. So in the absence of carbohydrate, the consumption of a high proportion of fats will supply adequate nutrients to the brain.

It is well known that a ketogenic diet starves cancer because cancer cells thrive on sugar and cannot survive on ketones. So by drastically limiting carbohydrates (as the low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet does) you reduce glucose and insulin, and thus restrict the primary fuel for cancer cell growth.

Research done by the Silent Spring Institute, a 20-year-old organization made up of scientists who focus on the environment and women's health, lists 17 chemicals woman should avoid that have been shown to cause breast cancer in lab rats and are likely to do the same in women.

The chemicals are found in gasoline, diesel and other vehicle exhaust, flame retardants, stain-resistant textiles, paint removers, disinfection byproducts in drinking water, tobacco smoke, charred food, cleaning solvents like methylene chloride, pharmaceuticals used in hormone replacement therapy, nonstick coatings, and styrene used to make Styrofoam.

"Every woman in America has been exposed to chemicals that may increase her risk of getting breast cancer," according to the co-author of the study Julia Brody. "Unfortunately, the link between toxic chemicals and breast cancer has largely been ignored. Reducing chemical exposures could save many, many women's lives."

Evidence of tumor growth and diseased tissue has been found in fish and other species from the sea and river estuaries. This report shows many photographs of salmon the mouth of the Hydaburg River, Alaska with strange growths, fish from Nigliq Channel and upstream from Nigliq Channel to the Colville River, Alaska with bloody lesions and tumors on them, and many other fish showing classic signs of radiation-caused cancerous tumors.

There is no way to tell exactly where in the Pacific Ocean these fish have been. One thing is for certain: they're ALL from the Pacific Ocean.

If the strange lesions and cancerous tumors were only affecting Salmon, one might theorize that a particular disease had struck a particular species. That's not the case. Fresh water Pike  are also being caught with grotesque cancerous tumors protruding outside their bodies. Tumors are also affecting other species of fish like the Canadian Whitefish. Vancouver Island area Herring are also being found to be bleeding from their gills, eyes, mouths and bellies.

Researchers in Australia noticed a large tumor protruding from the mouth of a great white shark, as well as another mass on the head of a bronze whaler shark. The great white's tumor measured 1 foot (30 centimeters) long and 1 foot wide, according to a study describing the tumors published online in November in the Journal of Fish Diseases. Yet sharks have not been known to get cancer.

Mammals as well as fish are being affected, including various types of Seals, Walruses and even Polar Bears. They have been found suffering from bloody lesions, some are suffering external tumors and others are losing their fur - hair loss is one of the first signs of radiation poisoning, even in humans.

We all need to consider this situation and what it means to ourselves in terms of food and lifestyle choices. There are many possibilities to the likely cause. The most obvious being the Fukushima incident pouring radioactive waste into the ocean. It is expected that Governments and officials will deny any possibility. The bottom line is that something is in the oceans that is causing the fish and mammals to become ill. If we eat those diseased fish it is possible that it could increase our risk of becoming ill.

Chronic Inflammation Resulting from Typical Lifestyle Choices Promotes Cancer

Graham Player Ph.D.'s curator insight, April 25, 2014 2:52 AM

There is direct connection between chronic inflammation and the development of cancer, as well as many other disease states. Many factors can contribute to chronic inflammation including stress, toxins, genetic predisposition, lack of exercise and diet.

Many doctors today recommend people take daily anti-inflammatory medicine, such as aspirin, to reduce their chances of developing chronic long-term inflammation. While this may be the case, research indicates this practice may be causing more harm than good for some people.

One byproduct of inflammation is an increase in C-reactive protein in the body, and it is good practice to have this checked during routine medical checkups. Research indicates that foods high in magnesium (e.g. almonds, spinach, cashews, black beans, kelp, pumpkin seeds, etc.) can help reduce inflammation and elevated levels of C-reactive protein.

Maintaining a proper balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can also help to reduce the risk of inflammation. The typical western diet is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, and has excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. Research has indicated that excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids and a very high omega-6/omega-3 ratio, as is found in today's Western diets, promotes many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

One study found that a ratio of 2.5/1 (omega-6 / omega-3) reduced rectal cell proliferation in patients with colorectal cancer, whereas a ratio of 4/1 with the same amount of omega-3 had no such effect. Studies indicate that the optimal ratio may vary by disease.

The bottom line is that reducing the level of chronic inflammation, assisted by a diet with a lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is desirable in reducing the risk of many of the chronic diseases including cancer. To learn more see here - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12442909

The belief of medical experts seems to be that cancer is a genetic disease. A belief that is expressed in our college education, biology textbooks, medical education, and top scientific journals. The belief is extended to suggest that if there is any metabolic component to the cause of cancer, then it is due to some genomic instability.

The origin of these beliefs dates back to 1914 with the work of Theodor Heinrich Boveri, a German biologist. However it turns out that he never actually studied cancer himself. Today many scientists have a different view of cancer and do not subscribe to the theory that cancer is genetic in origin. Cancer cells also are metabolically abnormal. Research has shown that transferring the nucleus of cancer cells into normal cells does not result in the normal cells becoming cancerous. Further research indicates that transferring normal mitochondria into cancer cells can also suppress the development of the cancer. This suggests that abnormalities which may exist in the nucleus, such as various genomic instabilities, are not the drivers of the cancer. These findings contradict the theory that the genes are driving the cancer.

So what does drive cancer? Typically the mitochondria in cancer cells are damaged and the integrity of their structure, and therefore function, is compromised. Some studies have shown that many tumor cells have no mitochondria. Thomas Seyfried , PhD, asserts that if the respiration function within the cell becomes damaged it can give rise to the development of cancer. Compromised respiration gives rise to increased fermentation which allows the cell to survive with defective respiration. His work, together with preclinical and case report studies, has led him to the conclusion that restricted diet can be an effective metabolic therapy for cancer, in place of the normal standard of care that involves radiation and chemotherapy.

Specifically he has found that the ketogenic diet is able to restrict and reduce cancer growth. It involves calorie restriction through lack (or severe restriction) of carbohydrates in the diet. The absence of glucose as a result of lack of carbohydrates is replaced by high fat content. The combination of lack of carbohydrates and high fat encourages the liver to make ketone bodies from the fats. The ketones become the food supply for the brain cells and other important organs such as the heart. Tumor cells cannot metabolize ketones so they gradually die off from lack of glucose.

However it is important that the ketogenic diet is maintained within restricted amounts. Unrestricted consumption of fats can have the effect of compromising the effect of insulin, and therefore result in high glucose levels which will then feed the cancer cells. Further, Dr. Seyfried has established that hyperbaric oxygen therapy together with the ketogenic diet has been found to have a very beneficial synergistic benefit on the reduction of cancer.

The process first involves getting people into the right metabolic state where their ketone production is increased and their glucose is reduced. This may involve a 3-day therapeutic fast, and then transition to a ketogenic diet. In this state the cancer cells become vulnerable to attack, and the normal cells are protected.

To learn more refer to Dr. Seyfried’s book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease”.

This is not a new discovery and has been advocated by many researchers and scientists for many years. For those with an interest in cancer or cancer prevention please do your own research or look through the references to Vitamin D here throughout my topic.

An article published way back in 2009 in the Annals of Epidemiology projected that raising the minimum year-around serum 25(OH)D level (i.e. Vitamin D level in the blood) to 40 to 60 ng/mL (100–150 nmol/L) would prevent approximately 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer each year, and 75% of deaths from these diseases in the United States and Canada. It is beneficial for colon, breast, ovarian, renal, pancreatic, aggressive prostate and other cancers. Professor Joel Brind, a professor at Baruch College, City University of New York explains why abortion might increase the risk of breast cancer…. “First, it is universally accepted that having a child decreases a woman’s risk of breast cancer, because the maturation of the cells in the breast into milk-producing cells renders them less susceptible to becoming cancerous. Second, pregnancy hugely increases the number of breast cells vulnerable to cancer. A live birth provides enough time for these “progenitor cells” to differentiate into more mature, more cancer-resistant cells. Therefore, abortion leaves a woman’s breasts with more places for cancer to start than were there before the pregnancy began.”

Many official bodies continue to deny categorically any link between abortion and breast cancer. However 53 (73%) of the 73 worldwide studies since 1957 show an association of induced abortion and subsequent development of breast cancer.

Women should be aware that a link between abortion and breast cancer is biologically plausible but the evidence is still hotly disputed by researchers, obstetricians and gynaecologists.

Acupuncture appears safe and may reduce lymphedema associated with breast cancer treatments.

Lymphedema is an abnormal buildup of lymph fluid that causes swelling and sometimes pain. It is a common complaint of male and female breast cancer patients following surgery. The likelihood of developing lymphedema increases with more extensive surgery, increased number of lymph nodes removed, and amount of radiation therapy to the axilla following surgery.

Graham Player Ph.D.'s curator insight, September 23, 2014 12:32 PM

This article brings to light the fact that people have been able to cure their own cancer using natural and unproven remedies focused primarily on significant lifestyle changes, such as radically altering the diet, using herbs and supplements, and embracing social support. It points out that these approaches have no scientific basis and can give false hope.

As people become more informed and interested in natural approaches to helping to overcome cancer, there is bound to be considerable debate, disagreement and doubt over what works and what doesn’t work. On the one hand the conventional scientific approach will predictably support chemotherapy, radiation and surgery as the only viable standard of care. This is not an unreasonable view based on the past 50 years of scientific research, investment and focus of the medical system and pharmaceutical companies.

However on the other hand many people believe that the proclaimed ‘War on Cancer’ by President Nixon in the early 1970s has very little likelihood of success. Amidst the best of what science, medicine, research and money has been able to offer over more than 40 years of focus, cancer prevalence has now increased to affect 1 in 2 males and 1 in 3 females. So it is not an unreasonable view that science does not yet have the answers.

Lately there have been popular and best-selling books written that have analyzed what cancer survivors have done who have had apparent spontaneous remission of their cancer without any use of the conventional science-based standard of care.

It is quite predictable that advocates and supporters of the conventional science-based standard of care speak out against these books and natural methods saying the approaches have not been scientifically proven, and offer false hope. In terms of false hope we also need to look at the conventional model and realize that after 40+ years of dedicated and focused research there is not only no cure, but the cancer incidence has increased significantly. So I suggest it is up to the individual patient to determine for themselves which approach has what degree of false hope.

It is very easy and convenient to relegate natural approaches to treatment into the “not been scientifically proven” basket, and to regard them as ‘anecdotal’ only. However if thousands of people are overcoming cancer by using non-conventional methods (as seems to be the case), then maybe we should be asking ourselves at what stage does ‘anecdotal’ evidence (i.e. unproven scientifically but proven in terms of evidence of outcome) begin to have some relevance? Surely there is a point at which it is normal and logical for that evidence to be relevant and significant. We may begin to wonder about the objectives - are we protecting science or are we protecting people.

Following cancer on a daily basis I get to see both sides of the argument. I report mostly on what is being discovered and researched in the conventional scientific world, simply because that is what is mostly reported in scientific journals and the media. However it certainly does seem to me that evidenced-based natural therapies surely warrant serious consideration, if only based on the fact that there seem to be thousands of cases of people overcoming their own cancer using various ‘non-proven’ methods. In addition there are hundreds of natural holistic practitioners and clinics worldwide helping cancer patients. Another consideration is that when ordinary people do things that seem to be able to achieve what previously was considered not possible (according to the conventional view) then those things may quickly become the normal approach for everybody. The fact that science cannot explain it, has very little relevance.

Science will always have its important role and relevance in society. But we certainly know that science’s focus on cancer for 40+ years does not have all the answers. Perhaps part of the problem is the desire to hang on to and understand everything from only the perspective of Newtonian science rather than embrace quantum science, and to step outside the box with a willingness to objectively consider the holistic principles, what nature has always been able to provide, what cultures have successfully done for thousands of years, and what today people are doing to help cure themselves of cancer. While it may not lead to the development of any patented medicines, may reduce the profits of some of the present drug therapies, and may turn out to be inconvenient in upsetting the status quo, it is something that needs to be done based on the growing evidence in front of us all.

Long ago in 1847 Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis had anecdotal evidence that doctors carried germs on their hands that infected patients, and therefore they should wash their hands before treating patients. However his anecdotal observations conflicted with the established scientific and medical opinions of the time and as a result, his ideas were rejected by the medical community and he was forced to leave his career. Let’s hope that same rigid unbending thinking and dogma does not still prevail in the contemporary medical system.

Research has shown that breast cancer cells send out chemical signals to recruit other cells for the process of spreading the cancer.

The cancer cells, which differ from normal cells in their oxygenation, send out a chemical signal called hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), which they release to help them cope with low-oxygen conditions. The researchers also group found that HIF-1 induced adult stem cells called mesenchymal stem cells to release a signal to nearby breast cancer cells, which made them more likely to spread. Breast cancers need the support of several types of host cells in order to metastasize.

Gregg Semenza, a professor and director of the Vascular Biology Program in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Institute for Cell Engineering, commented that the study adds to the evidence that an HIF-1 inhibitor drug could be an effective addition to chemotherapy regimens.

In this video (11 minutes) Chris, who cured his own stage 3 colon cancer without chemotherapy or radiation, answers a question that would benefit every cancer patient – what do you wish someone had told you when you were first diagnosed with cancer? I have included below what I felt are the important points.

Don’t Be Afraid

Being afraid is a normal reaction to a cancer diagnosis. The first reaction is to think you are dying. But you are not. Cancer is a normal process and the body is designed to recognize and eliminate cancer cells. The cancer itself is not the real problem for you. The main problem is that you have a systemic metabolic disease that is resulting in tumors growing in your body. The tumor is the symptom. If you simply take out the tumor your body will build another. Cancer results in a body that is nutrient deficient and overloaded with toxins, and typically the result of a suppressed or overloaded immune system.

Don’t let anyone rush you into surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. You have time. The majority of cancers are not life-threatening and not emergency situations. Most doctors will admit you have some time. The cancer diagnosis should be a wakeup call telling you that you need to radically change your life and focus on becoming healthy.

The following four factors will either promote your health or promote disease, depending on the choices you make. You have choices. You can turn your diseased body into a healthy body by changing your life and making wise choices. Doing so will give your body everything it needs to repair, regenerate and detoxify.

Diet

What causes the cancer are a number of factors, including the processed man-made food that we were not designed to eat. We are overfed but malnourished. We get plenty of protein, fats and carbohydrates. But we are not getting the much needed micronutrients, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and the phytonutrient compounds in fruits, vegetables and plants that support the body’s ability to heal. Instead we pollute our bodies with processed foods, artificial chemicals, flavors, texture-enhancers, artificial fats – i.e. non-natural food that essentially is poisoning and polluting us. What we need to eat are foods that come from the earth in their natural form. Obesity is the second leading cause of cancer. Being overweight results in your body being in a chronic state of inflammation.

Lifestyle

If you drink too much alcohol, smoke or take drugs it can result in cancer. Especially taking pharmaceutical drugs. Pharmaceutical drugs do not heal. They only mask and alleviate symptoms. The only way to true healing is through nutrition to give your body all the building blocks that it needs to repair and regenerate.

Exercise
If you are not active and moving you are not sending signals of life to your body to grow, to get stronger and to live.

Stress

Stress suppresses and destroys your immune system. This applies to stress from relationships, work, or over-exercise. Harboring negative emotional stress like unforgiveness and bitterness, jealousy, being judgmental and critical of others, will put your body in a chronic state of inflammation. Your stress hormones will be elevated which can lead to encouraging cancer.

So many people have made radical changes like the above to their life, and have reversed chronic disease conditions and cured their own cancers. The medical view of cancer is that it is a linear progression that will grow and spread all over your body. The latest clinical research has proven that to be false.

Learning from the experience of others who have overcome their own cancer should be a primary focus of cancer sufferers and their family and friends. It is important to take time, don’t let anyone rush you into something, and listen to your own instincts. Don’t do something you do not feel good about. It is your life, you are in control and you make your own decisions. You have options, and your body can heal itself. You are also encouraged to come to terms with your own spirituality and faith, and seek the path of healing.

There is no doubt that cancer is more prevalent today than in the past. The cause of this could be the subject of lengthy debate. However it is likely most would agree that an increase in the rates of obesity and a decrease in physical activity are two important factors that contribute considerably to this situation.

If that is the case then cancer rates could be significantly reduced through more physical activity and changes in diet.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been previously reported as associated with increased risk of breast cancer. A new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has analyzed the relationships between hormone replacement therapy (HRT), body mass index (BMI), and breast density.

Reported findings indicate:
- A greater than 20% increased risk in breast cancer when associated with HRT use among white women and Hispanic women, but not black women
- HRT use was more strongly associated with breast cancer risk in women with low or normal BMI, but no association was observed among women with a high BMI
- Women with denser breasts had an increased likelihood of breast cancer among those who reported HRT use
- HRT use was not associated with breast cancer for women with high BMI with low breast density
- HRT use was associated with a statistically significant higher risk of breast cancer for women with low or normal BMI and high breast density

Comments have been made that these findings could indicate HRT may be used for some women without increasing breast cancer risk, and could be used to help identify women who may use HRT to relieve postmenopausal symptoms without increasing their risk of breast cancer. However can only be speculation at this stage, as details on HRT type and duration of use were not available in the study.

Yet more evidence that personalized care MUST be the approach and survivors and caregivers need to be informed and ask the questions from a "how does this apply to me".  Even those with similar diagnoses can have completely different responses to treatment.  Know your body and insist that your uniqueness be factored into medical decisions.

Common sense should also prevail when seeking treatment. Second opinions can also be beneficial. At the end of the day, doctors are simply people.
