Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been previously reported as associated with increased risk of breast cancer. A new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has analyzed the relationships between hormone replacement therapy (HRT), body mass index (BMI), and breast density.

Reported findings indicate:
- A greater than 20% increased risk in breast cancer when associated with HRT use among white women and Hispanic women, but not black women
- HRT use was more strongly associated with breast cancer risk in women with low or normal BMI, but no association was observed among women with a high BMI
- Women with denser breasts had an increased likelihood of breast cancer among those who reported HRT use
- HRT use was not associated with breast cancer for women with high BMI with low breast density
- HRT use was associated with a statistically significant higher risk of breast cancer for women with low or normal BMI and high breast density

Comments have been made that these findings could indicate HRT may be used for some women without increasing breast cancer risk, and could be used to help identify women who may use HRT to relieve postmenopausal symptoms without increasing their risk of breast cancer. However can only be speculation at this stage, as details on HRT type and duration of use were not available in the study.

Yet more evidence that personalized care MUST be the approach and survivors and caregivers need to be informed and ask the questions from a "how does this apply to me".  Even those with similar diagnoses can have completely different responses to treatment.  Know your body and insist that your uniqueness be factored into medical decisions.

A study reported in "Acupuncture in Medicine" shows that acupuncture and topical herbs have the potential to clinically cure 44 percent and positively affect 52 percent of lymphedema cases when used together for 12 weeks. Acupuncture appears safe and may reduce lymphedema associated with breast cancer treatments.

Lymphedema is an abnormal buildup of lymph fluid that causes swelling and sometimes pain. It is a common complaint of male and female breast cancer patients following surgery. The likelihood of developing lymphedema increases with more extensive surgery, increased number of lymph nodes removed, and amount of radiation therapy to the axilla following surgery.

Link Between Abortion and Breast Cancer

Link Between Abortion and Breast Cancer | Breast Cancer and Healing ~ The Pink Paper | Scoop.it
Is there a link between induced abortion and breast cancer? Any such link has been hotly denied by official bodies but a new study has added further fuel to

Professor Joel Brind, a professor at Baruch College, City University of New York explains why abortion might increase the risk of breast cancer…. “First, it is universally accepted that having a child decreases a woman’s risk of breast cancer, because the maturation of the cells in the breast into milk-producing cells renders them less susceptible to becoming cancerous. Second, pregnancy hugely increases the number of breast cells vulnerable to cancer. A live birth provides enough time for these “progenitor cells” to differentiate into more mature, more cancer-resistant cells. Therefore, abortion leaves a woman’s breasts with more places for cancer to start than were there before the pregnancy began.”

Many official bodies continue to deny categorically any link between abortion and breast cancer. However 53 (73%) of the 73 worldwide studies since 1957 show an association of induced abortion and subsequent development of breast cancer.

Women should be aware that a link between abortion and breast cancer is biologically plausible but the evidence is still hotly disputed by researchers, obstetricians and gynaecologists.
