Pinterest doubles down on making money, rolls out video ads

Pinterest doubles down on making money, rolls out video ads | The Perfect Storm Team | Scoop.it
Pinterest may be a popular service with an estimated 47.1 million monthly users, but profitable? Not so much.

To help change that, the social network expanded its ad products on Tuesday by rolling out video ads called Cinematic Pins.

Cinematic Pins work similarly to Pinterest’s current ad products, Promoted Pins, in that they’re formatted to blend in with other items in your home feed — except for the fact they're motion-based.

Gap, L’Oreal, Target, Unilever, Visa, Walgreens and Wendy’s are among the first crop of paid advertisers.

Online video: The next best thing to in-store shopping?

Online video: The next best thing to in-store shopping? | The Perfect Storm Team | Scoop.it

Video has proven itself for its ability to create a brand experience on YouTube, Facebook, and other social media platforms. But retailers of all sizes are catching on to the fact that video can be the next-best thing to visiting the store in terms of product education and conversion.

Consumers are increasingly adept at ignoring banner ads, and video is the format that grabs attention. Almost all (96%) shoppers find videos helpful when making purchase decisions online, according to a survey  from Animoto, a video marketing consultancy, and 80% say that having a video to show how a product or service works is important.

“Video is the right communication tool to help replace actually being in the store,” Animoto CEO Brad Jefferson told Retail Dive. “Photos got us there for a long time, but now when you go to a website and there’s nothing moving, it starts to feel stale.”...

Have you ever wondered why people dislike auto-play videos? According to Liraz Margalit, it is steeped in history.

A fascinating look at how human behavior plays a role in marketing. This is something that is vital if you want your products to sell.

The post is interesting as well, because it is hosted on a website that does the exact opposite of the author advised. I already discussed this issue with one of the founders, but apparently they don't care about the UX. If you read the comments, you will understand what I mean.

A great article. Too bad that The Next Web doesn't walk the talk!

Mike Donahue's curator insight, June 19, 12:23 PM

Every website that has one of those annoying "sign up" screens that pops up immediately after the page loads and before you've even read anything (that includes you TNW) needs to read this. A great article that explains how your desire to drive a visitor a specific action may in fact drive them to do the opposite.

@Liraz - The only suggestion I would make is that rationalization happens in the conscious, not the subconscious, mind.

How to Integrate Social Media and Blogging from The Art of Social Media

How to Integrate Social Media and Blogging from The Art of Social Media | The Perfect Storm Team | Scoop.it

Ideas that spread, win. ~Seth Godin

A few years ago, blogging and social media were separate. Blogging was long-form, serious, and crafted. Social media was short-form, personal, and spontaneous. Some people predicted that social media would replace blogging because of declining attention spans.

Now blogging and social media not only amicably coexist; they complement each other. The trick is to use a blog to enrich your social media with long-form posts and to use social media to promote your blog.I recently did a live webinar event with Marketo about The Art of Social Media, and we’d like to share the takeaways from the presentation and a few of the follow-up questions that we answered....
