Building Self-Confidence - Prepare yourself for success

Building Self-Confidence - Prepare yourself for success | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

From the quietly confident doctor whose advice we rely on, to the charismatic confidence of an inspiring speaker, self-confident people have qualities that everyone admires.

Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many people struggle to find it. Sadly, this can be a vicious circle: People who lack self-confidence can find it difficult to become successful.

After all, most people are reluctant to back a project that's being pitched by someone who was nervous, fumbling and overly apologetic.

On the other hand, you might be persuaded by someone who speaks clearly, who holds his or her head high, who answers questions assuredly, and who readily admits when he or she does not know something.

Self-confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success.

Do You Give Up Too Easily? How To Power Through

Do You Give Up Too Easily? How To Power Through | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it
The truth is that many of us don't apply ourselves enough to achieve the positive life changes to which we aspire. Why? Why is it that we so often fail to successfully make the changes we really want?

Over the years, I've lectured to tens of thousands of people on the subject of improving their quality of life. One of the main points I make is that an essential element of having more of the life you want is dedicating at least some time each day to clearing and quieting your mind.

After describing the practical, physiological, emotional, mental, and of course spiritual benefits of taking even just a few minutes a day to meditate or relax deeply, it's clear that most people are genuinely inspired to do it. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of people ever act on their inspiration. But these would-be meditators are not alone.

Reboot your life: 20 mental barriers you should let go of | Soul Hiker

Reboot your life: 20 mental barriers you should let go of | Soul Hiker | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

You are in an imaginary hot air balloon. It’s just you and all of your belongings in the wicker basket. Something went wrong and you are losing altitude fast. You will hit the ground in less than ten minutes if you don’t come up with something quick.

The only immediate solution is to get rid of excess weight and throw off at least half of your belongings. It’s that or hit the ground in ten. You look at the things and hesitate for a few seconds but then you do what you have to do and start throwing the things you have gathered half your life one by one. The cargo gets lighter, the descent slows down then you are floating up again back to altitude. You are relieved beyond comprehension.

This happens to all of us in less dramatic circumstances. We attach ourselves to things that we have accumulated over the years. Some of them might have some practical value. Others we just have attached ourselves sentimentally to over time. Some others are just clutter.

Overcoming the Fear of Making Mistakes

Overcoming the Fear of Making Mistakes | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it
“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people.” This is a famous quote from Anne Lamott in her book Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Intuitively, we know that perfectionism is unrealistic and restrictive, a tyrant that steals success. In fact, there are many sayings and experts that stress the importance of making mistakes for creating and achieving great things.

But still there are many people who fear making mistakes. According to Martin Antony, Ph.D, professor of psychology at Ryerson University and co-author of When Perfect Isn’t Good Enough, “Generally, fears are influenced by both our biological and genetic makeup, as well as our experiences.”

We model what we see, Antony said. He gave the example of parents expressing their fears over making mistakes, which a child, like a sponge, soaks up.

When you find your passion, you’ll have a boost of motivation to get started and change your life.

However, this motivation won’t last if you don’t turn it into habits.

We are creatures of habits. Our human nature always looks for ways to create patterns and do things on autopilot.

Habits are what differentiate successful people from others.

The habits that you’ve developed in the LOST phase – where you used to wander aimlessly without a clear passion or purpose – won’t help you build a life of passion.

That’s why you need to develop a new set of habits to serve you in your newly passionate pursuit.

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage. ~Anaïs Nin, Diary, 1969

As you constantly increasing your exposure to life, you’ll build your confidence in mastering or doing anything.

Change Any Habit Painlessly: 6 Tips

Change Any Habit Painlessly: 6 Tips | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it
Almost everything you currently do... you can do even better. Here's how.

Want to change an old habit? You probably should: One study determined that over 40% of the "decisions" we make every day aren't really decisions.

They're habits.

Much of the time we don't really make decisions. We do what we've done before, and that makes us less productive, less effective, less healthy and fit—less everything—than we could be.

So what can we do? Change an old habit into a new habit.

While changing a habit isn't easy, it is simple—especially if you follow the process described by Charles Duhigg, the author of the bestselling book The Power of Habit. (Definitely worth a read, especially if you want to harness the power of habits to improve not just yourself but also your team or business.)

Self-Acceptance Lessons from Ralph Waldo Emerson

Self-Acceptance Lessons from Ralph Waldo Emerson | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else, is the greatest accomplishment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the greatest American essayists, poets, and thinkers, clearly understood the importance of self-acceptance. He believed in searching for truth from within. Back in the early days of the Transcendental movement, Emerson had experienced firsthand both the benefits and drawbacks of going against mainstream culture and society. Emerson’s clear message was that a self-directed path is the only path that can lead to true happiness and contentment.

The same message applies even in modern times. We are constantly bombarded by ideas that try to make us something else. We are told how to be, who we should be like, how to live, what our beliefs ought to be and what we should wear… and the list goes on.

3 Foundations of Courage – How to Create Momentum

3 Foundations of Courage – How to Create Momentum | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

How Do You Define Courage?

Do you think you are courageous? I know I didn’t think I was. A couple of years ago, I found myself curled up in my bed, depressed.

I had a good life. I had a reliable job and a nice place to live. I had friends around me. And I felt guilty about being depressed.

Deep inside, I knew that I was meant for more but I felt paralyzed to make a change because I didn’t have a clear vision of how to move forward.

I remember wrapping my arms around my knees and hugging them to my chest. I was so afraid to move forward, but I knew that I could not continue living a “good” life when my spirit longed to be free. I wanted to express my greatness!

You may feel the same way I did. Maybe not. You may doubt that same greatness lies within you or you may have absolute confidence in it.

No matter what your situation is, courage is the common denominator when it comes to success. Let me share what I did to move from depression to momentum...

Balance is the regulator of happiness!

Why the regulator of happiness? It’s simple… without balance, no happiness possible! You know it and you’ve already realized many times in your life, I’m sure.

To have a balanced life, we must:

  • Giving and receiving, otherwise we will be quickly emptied of all our energy.
  • Move and rest, otherwise we will not be productive for a long time.
  • Live and let live, so as not to be won by frustration.

You will understand, too much or too little always end up creating problems that will interfere with our lives and also our well-being.

When I say balance, I am also referring to the core areas as:...

7 Ultimate Ways to Build Self-Confidence

7 Ultimate Ways to Build Self-Confidence | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

Self-confidence is the strand of confidence which exclusively deals with the self-assuredness in one’s personal judgment, ability, and power. It therefore is the most important sort of confidence because deprived of it we are simply left without a backbone.

That’s why whenever I write articles I always emphasize self-confidence because everything you ever do is built on this foundation.

These 7 strategies which will help you not just build, but radiate self-confidence.

1. Start Positive
A huge part of self-confidence simply comes from perspective. It comes from your outlook towards the world. So if at this moment you have any negative thoughts, begin replacing them with positive ones.

Redirect your substantial energy of frustration and negativity, and convert it into positive, determination.

60 Inconvenient Personal Development Truths

60 Inconvenient Personal Development Truths | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

I know you want to be the best you can be. We all do. But sometimes we look for success in the wrong places or we try to achieve it in the wrong ways.

Here are 60 inconvenient truths about personal development to help you stay on track.

  1. The acquisition of knowledge doesn’t mean you’re growing. Growing happens when what you know changes how you live.
  2. You can’t have good ideas unless you’re willing to generate a lot of bad ones.
  3. A good idea without action is nothing at all.
  4. It’s not so much about finding opportunities as it is about creating them.
  5. 10% of our lives is decided by uncontrollable circumstances. 90% is decided by how we react to those circumstances.
  6. What we don’t start today won’t be finished by tomorrow.
  7. If you’re waiting for the perfect conditions, ideas or plans to get started, you’ll never achieve anything.

27 Traits Of Successful People

27 Traits Of Successful People | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

Is it really possible to become a successful person in just one day? I actually believe you can become a successful person in just one second.

Why? Because to be a successful person you only have to change your thoughts and start to think like a successful person. Your have to program your brain to respond differently to situations that it was previously refusing.

But how exactly are successful people made and how do they think? I’ve read and studied a lot of books on the subject, as well as experimenting and asking around. The following is list of 27 traits that distinguish successful people from ordinary people. If you take the commitment to apply every day each principle in your life, you’ll start to see amazing results in no time.

  1. They are positive. Successful people don’t let negative events alter their ego. They see the glass half full and not half empty. They are known as the ones who raises positiveness among others. Benefits: other people want to stay with them because they make them feel better.
  2. They say yes to everything. They take every opportunity they can. They are not afraid of doing something new, like giving a talk in public. They take everything like a challenge with themselves...

“Happiness is a habit – cultivate it.” Elbert

Happiness is one aspiration all people share. No one wants to be sad and depressed.

We’ve all seen people who are always happy – even amidst agonizing life trials. I’m not saying happy people don’t feel grief, sorrow or sadness; they just don’t let it overtake their life. The following are 21 things happy people make a habit of doing:

1. Appreciate Life
Be thankful that you woke up alive each morning. Develop a childlike sense of wonder towards life. Focus on the beauty of every living thing. Make the most of each day. Don’t take anything for granted. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

2. Choose Friends Wisely...

You Mean Anything Is Possible? | Psychology Today

You Mean Anything Is Possible? | Psychology Today | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it
Once there was a man named Lester Levenson. This is true; I know former students of his. One day when he was in his early forties, doctors sent him home from the hospital, giving him only a few months to live. There was nothing to be done, they said. His heart was so weak he was instructed not even to tie his own shoelaces, lest the exertion cause him to drop dead.

Now Lester, being a thinking kind of guy, decided he had been stupid to have gotten himself into this position. So he set about to correct things. Overwhelmed with a fear of dying, he began to examine his predicament. He concluded that it was his feelings that were causing all his problems, not others or the world, as he had previously thought. He also discovered that each of us has an inborn capacity to release our negative feelings. So he began to systematically let go of every negative emotion he was experiencing.

He has a new book, Freedom Is Blogging in Your Underwear, where he explores how blogging, and the intellectual and creative freedom it gives him, changed his life.

Having a blog isn’t the right route to happiness for everyone, of course. But zoikes, it’s a thrilling tool. And his book is really about how to think big for yourself and the possibilities that the internet offers.

3 Things a CEO Learned: a Yoga Manifesto

Def Jam records founder Russell Simmons, “The Voice” star and singer Adam Levine, and Jon Bon Jovi all practice yoga. People from all walks of life, all ages and all religions practice yoga for spirituality, relaxation, detox, strength and flexibility. Looking in from the outside, I always wondered, “What do they know that I don’t?”

When my wife suggested taking a yoga class two years ago, I went with trepidation and visions of chanting, incense, and body parts in odd places.

What I didn’t know at the time was that I was beginning a journey learning more about myself and, surprisingly, more about business than I learned at one of the top ten business schools in the country and 20 years of professional experience.
Here are three things I learned:

As I’ve grown older, I’ve been tempted to put those dreams aside.
I’ve been told to be a realist and tone those dreams down.
Don’t get your hopes up John, it will lead to a letdown.
Put your dreams away, and do the mundane.
Follow the rules and do what you’re told.

20 Practical Ways to Kick Fear in the Butt

20 Practical Ways to Kick Fear in the Butt | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

Hands down, the most common reason I hear from my coaching clients for why they can’t accomplish something is fear.

They may not call it fear directly, but that’s what it is. They are afraid of some perceived bad outcome if they attempt the thing they really want.

And the irony is that the one thing standing between them and what they want in life isn’t really substantive. It is just a feeling, usually without any basis in reality. Most fears are that way — feelings without substance.

If you look back over the fears you’ve had during your lifetime, you’ll probably discover that most of them were unfounded. What you fear either didn’t materialize or wasn’t as bad as you feared.

10 Ways to Find More Hours in Your Day

10 Ways to Find More Hours in Your Day | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

We all wish we had just a bit more time.

Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or spring-clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar, or get a new qualification.

I can’t magically make all your days 25 hours long. But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

  1. Get Out of Bed Earlier
If you normally get up at 7.30am, try getting up at 7am. That half-hour might not sound like much -- but it could be time that you use to meditate, to exercise, to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish, or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.

The first hour or half-hour of the day is often a great chance to work on something important, before other demands crowd in on you. And if you need your beauty sleep? Just get to bed half an hour earlier.
