Overcoming the Fear of Making Mistakes

Overcoming the Fear of Making Mistakes | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it
“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people.” This is a famous quote from Anne Lamott in her book Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Intuitively, we know that perfectionism is unrealistic and restrictive, a tyrant that steals success. In fact, there are many sayings and experts that stress the importance of making mistakes for creating and achieving great things.

But still there are many people who fear making mistakes. According to Martin Antony, Ph.D, professor of psychology at Ryerson University and co-author of When Perfect Isn’t Good Enough, “Generally, fears are influenced by both our biological and genetic makeup, as well as our experiences.”

We model what we see, Antony said. He gave the example of parents expressing their fears over making mistakes, which a child, like a sponge, soaks up.

Crossing the Bridge

Crossing the Bridge | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

It’s difficult to create a life of abundance until you have a truly inspiring vision of what life will be like on the other side.

Many people try to move towards abundance because they’re fed up with scarcity. They’re tired of working at jobs they semi-dislike just to pay the bills. They notice the years passing and don’t feel they have much to show for it. These people seldom escape that reality, however, because that level of thinking actually reinforces scarcity.

Abundance is much easier to create once you get clear about what you’ll do with it. Why bother with it? Who cares? What will life be like on the other side? Is it just the absence of some annoyances? Is there something more to it?

Is Fear Holding You Back?

Is Fear Holding You Back? | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

Most people have areas in their lives where they would like to make some improvements. Is that true of you? Would you like to be in better shape physically, emotionally, mentally or financially?

That’s a lot of territory, I know. Perhaps you would like to make some positive changes in all those areas. Well, you are certainly not alone. I think all of us feel we have room for improvement in all those areas of life, I certainly do.

So what’s the problem?

If we see things in our life that we want to change, then what is it that is holding us back from doing it? Why don’t we just make the desired changes? Questions like that can sure give birth to a huge list of excuses, can’t they?...

5 Ways To Turn Fear Into Fuel

5 Ways To Turn Fear Into Fuel | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

Uncertainty. It’s a terrifying word.

Living with it, dangling over your head like the sword of Damocles, day in day out, is enough to send anyone spiraling into a state of anxiety, fear and paralysis.

Like it or not, though, uncertainty is the new normal. We live in a time where the world is in a state of constant, long-term flux. And, that’s not all. If you want to spend your time on the planet not just getting-by, but consistently creating art, experiences, businesses and lives that truly matter, you’ll need to proactively seek out, invite and even deliberately amplify uncertainty. Because the other side of uncertainty is opportunity.

Nothing great was ever created by waiting around for someone to tell you it’s all going to be okay or for perfect information to drop from the sky. Doesn’t happen that way. Great work requires you to act in the face of uncertainty, to live in the question long enough for your true potential to emerge. There is no alternative...

20 Practical Ways to Kick Fear in the Butt

20 Practical Ways to Kick Fear in the Butt | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

Hands down, the most common reason I hear from my coaching clients for why they can’t accomplish something is fear.

They may not call it fear directly, but that’s what it is. They are afraid of some perceived bad outcome if they attempt the thing they really want.

And the irony is that the one thing standing between them and what they want in life isn’t really substantive. It is just a feeling, usually without any basis in reality. Most fears are that way — feelings without substance.

If you look back over the fears you’ve had during your lifetime, you’ll probably discover that most of them were unfounded. What you fear either didn’t materialize or wasn’t as bad as you feared.

TODAY’S LEADERSHIP MANTRA : Move!

TODAY’S LEADERSHIP MANTRA : Move! | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

[Today 01-27-2012 for practical issues, I decided to integrate the TODAY'S LEADERSHIP MANTRA topics here.]

Move forward, always moves forward, such is life.

When we say that to stop, it’s go to the back, it’s reality. We live in a world where everything goes very fast and where we must be able to be adaptable, to be open to new things and to assimilate them.

What is it that can prevent us from moving forward, if not ourselves, perhaps fear, but as Victor Kiam has well said:

“Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”

that should give us enough courage to know that we are moving forward in all cases.

As a leader, we know that the only way to achieve his goal is to start and move constantly. The momentum thus created will also galvanize the team who will be drawn, with you, into the spiral to success.

7 Warning Signs That You’ve Given Up on Your Dreams

7 Warning Signs That You’ve Given Up on Your Dreams | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

What do you REALLY want from life? What’s your big dream? Are you taking steps toward it? If not, why not? What’s stopping you from taking action today?

Perhaps you’re scared, or maybe you've built a huge wall of procrastination that you'll never scale. Whatever it is, you probably think it has merit. In fact, you may have simply stopped thinking about your dreams because you've given up.

It's too bad. People in much worse situations than you have created the life of their dreams. You may have excuses and obstacles standing in your way, but you can transcend them. However, it only happens when you’re ready...

The Fear Of Failure Is Stomping On Your Dreams

The Fear Of Failure Is Stomping On Your Dreams | PEOPLE BUILDING | Scoop.it

What’s holding you back? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “I’d like to start a business, but….” And this is followed by any number of well-reasoned thoughts ⎯ from the “timing isn’t right” to “I don’t know who would buy my product” to “I doubt I could support myself” or “my job isn’t that bad right now.”

All of these rationales are founded in one thing ⎯ fear, and more specifically… fear of failure.

That’s right. The fear of failure is probably the strongest force holding people back from their potential. It’s not talent, or ambition, or ideas that stops budding entrepreneurs. It’s fear that can stop people dead in their tracks. And it’s stopped countless great businesses before they even begin.

People who fear failure learn it’s easier to slide along with the status quo than take that important first step. And certainly watching the nightly news doesn’t exactly help. In a world full of uncertainty and delicate economies, it’s easy to see why people want to play it safe. And it’s incredibly easy to rationalize why you shouldn’t do something risky. But just think of it this way: People who fear failure never take their first step to success.
