Heart-Pumping Yoga

Heart-Pumping Yoga | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

Cardio Yoga Vinyasa flow is specifically designed to build heat and keep your heart rate up with a series of demanding standing poses, twists, and inversions held for long periods. I've burned up to 400 calories during a 90-minute class! And the breathing technique used in yoga—inhaling and exhaling fluidly and calmly through the nose—can improve your cardiovascular health.

Try this routine three to six times a week: Warm up with Sun Salutation, then do each of the other four poses, separating each one with a flow sequence consisting of Plank, Chaturanga, Upward-Facing Dog, and Downward-Facing Dog. So do Warrior II, the sequence, Warrior III, the sequence, and so on.

A New Definition of Metabolism

A New Definition of Metabolism | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

Many people use the word metabolism, but few know what it actually means. Indeed, if you asked a room filled with a hundred doctors and nutritionists, “What’s the definition of metabolism?” you’d likely hear a hundred different answers. It’s no surprise, then, that the rest of us would be confused about this topic. So in the spirit of furthering science and making nutrition and health a lot more interesting, let’s take a look at the old definition of metabolism, and come up with a newer one that’s more crispy and fresh.

Here’s the basic, undisputed classic textbook definition of metabolism:

Metabolism is the sum total of all the chemical reactions in the body.

Are you surprised it’s that simple? Of course, we can talk about the

metabolism of such specific tissues as the liver and thyroid. We can talk about the metabolism of specific substances such as cholesterol. We can also talk about the metabolism of different body systems, such as digestive metabolism. People who say “I want to speed up my metabolism” are actually referring to calorie-burning metabolism, also known as thermic efficiency...

Five Reasons Your Body Wants You to Get in Shape this Year | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

Starting the process of recreating one’s body and engaging in healthier habits may seem like a difficult task, but few things will change one’s life as much as getting into shape. Many understand that changing their diet and starting an exercise regimen will shed pounds, but few realize just how all-encompassing these changes can be. For those that would like that nudge in the right direction, here are five of the top reasons that getting into shape will improve almost every face of their life.

John Gott Love's curator insight, April 26, 1:33 PM

But what exactly is the difference between the two? Seeking the answer to this frequently asked question, we turned to Lauren Fairbanks, a personal trainer at Equinox."

Why I Prefer To Fight The Aging Process

Why I Prefer To Fight The Aging Process | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

Life doesn't work like the deli counter. We don't all go out in the same order we came in.

I am 63, four years older than my mother was when she died. Unlike my mother, I am not overweight, diabetic, nor do I share her aversion to doctors. She made her choices and I made mine -- in no small part in response to hers. In the scorecard of life, so far I'm ahead.

I prefer to fight the aging process -- which, I'd like to point out, has nothing to do with dressing like a 20-something or running for Botox every time I spot a wrinkle.

Eating breakfast will help you drop pounds, and setting realistic goals will make you more likely to achieve them. Right? Wrong.

"Many of the common messages about combating obesity have little scientific support and, in some cases, are scientifically refuted," says Dr. David B. Allison, director of the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and co-author of "Myths, Presumptions, and Facts about Obesity," a study published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine that's causing quite a scientific storm. "And regardless of our enthusiasm for proposed programs, we must remember our duty to be unfailingly honest about what the scientific data actually shows."

Exercise that Replicates Life’s Demands Could Add Years to Your Life

Exercise that Replicates Life’s Demands Could Add Years to Your Life | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it
Today I lifted a giant, tractor-sized tire, bended over a heavy sled and pushed it while running as hard and as fast as I could, before jumping up and down onto a box—all within several minutes time, within the confines of VO2 Max boxing studio in Needham, Massachusetts.

If you think this sounds like an unusual workout, you probably haven’t been to the gym in a while—or at least to one that’s fallen in line with a new crop of gyms that are embracing functional exercise.

Functional exercise means that the exercise replicates life functions. For example, carrying two heavy gasoline jugs back and forth across the floor—not as easy as it sounds, believe me — is called the farmer’s walk.

Why Milk Isn't As "Natural" As You Think

Why Milk Isn't As "Natural" As You Think | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it
I recently had a conversation about dairy with a friend who is a medical practitioner. She asserted that if she were to choose to give her (as yet unborn) children milk, she would only give them whole milk because it was less processed, or in other words, more natural, than part-skimmed or totally skimmed milk.

Just consider this proposition for a moment, doesn’t it seem logical that whole milk isn’t processed to the same extent as 1 percent, 2 percent or skimmed milk because it hasn’t had any fat stripped away? Just the word “whole” implies a lack of alteration.

Hands down the best way to increase our alkalinity anddetox our purdy bodies is to consume a diet full of sunlight aka liquid chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll contains a powerful blood builder that’s said to increase red blood cells, improve circulation, ease inflammation, oxygenate the body, and counteract harmful free radicals. By eating (and drinking) a diet high in chlorophyll (raw fruits and veggies, especially leafy greens), we dine on liquid oxygen, the very substance we need to stay alive and thrive."

The 4 elements of physical energy and how to master them

The 4 elements of physical energy and how to master them | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

"Manage your energy, not your time" says the famous quote from Tony Schwartz. Physical energy is the most important element of it, here we take a closer look:

Schwartz famously proclaims in his book, that most of us are chasing the wrong resource: hours in the day. Instead, we should focus on something entirely different: our energy.

Our energy can be broken down in 4 different elements:

Your physical energy – how healthy are you?Your emotional energy – how happy are you?Your mental energy – how well can you focus on something?Your spiritual energy – why are you doing all of this? What is your purpose?

Oil Pulling Benefits and Treatments : Underground Health Reporter

Oil Pulling Benefits and Treatments : Underground Health Reporter | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

The ancient Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling has many benefits and has been shown to heal a wide variety of health problems.

What in The World Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is the practice of taking 1 tablespoon of a cold-pressed vegetable oil (such as sesame or sunflower seed oil) and swishing it in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes. This is done soon after waking, before eating or brushing one’s teeth — and it has the effect of “pulling” bacteria, parasites, mucous and other toxins from your body through your saliva. Oil pulling has its roots in Ayurveda, the Hindu art of healing, which asserts that the tongue is mapped by organ-locations. This means that each section of the tongue is connected to, or corresponds to, the liver, heart, kidneys, lungs, spleen, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine. When you swish the oil around the tongue, you effectively soothe and stimulate the key meridians of the body, and their corresponding organs. Cortisol: Turn Your 'Bad Boy' Hormone Into Goldilocks

Cortisol: Turn Your 'Bad Boy' Hormone Into Goldilocks | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

You know the bad boy you dated in high school or college? You knew he was bad news, you even knew it would end badly, but you dated him anyway. That's cortisol.

Cortisol is a stress hormone designed to give us the bursts of energy needed to escape a dangerous situation, like running away from a tiger. Unfortunately, modern life often convinces our brains that everything is a stressful situation -- and it's nearly impossible to escape an overflowing inbox. Instead of resolving the issue, we stay on high alert all the time, with elevated blood pressure and glucose levels. Over time, this becomes a serious health issue, despite how conventional medicine neglects the importance of this bad-boy hormone -- and that's not just my opinion, but the evidence continues to mount.

Using a foam roller is a great way to help prevent acute injuries when you frequently engage in high intensity exercise, such as Crossfit.  An article on T-Nation has a great explanation on how myofascial release works, and why it is beneficial:

Randy Bauer's curator insight, May 11, 2:57 PM

The foam roll is a valuable tool to promote physical recovery of muscles overused, or requiring relief from effects of physical training or postural overuse. This is a great overview of the foam roll, providing various uses for different parts of the body.

At www.bauerpt.com we use the soft foam roll, usually white, or the firm foam roll http://amzn.to/12lgovR, usually black. If you follow the link to amazon you can purchase. This price is very good as we retail the black foam roll for 20.00.

If you have questions regarding the use of the foam roll, and this infographic and video does not answer your questions, I would suggest consulting with a physical therapist near you.

Mediterranean Diet Can Cut Heart Disease, Study Finds

Mediterranean Diet Can Cut Heart Disease, Study Finds | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it
Until now, evidence that the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of heart disease was weak, and some experts had been skeptical that the effect of diet could be detected.

The findings, published on The New England Journal of Medicine’s Web site on Monday, were based on the first major clinical trial to measure the diet’s effect on heart risks. The magnitude of the diet’s benefits startled experts. The study ended early, after almost five years, because the results were so clear it was considered unethical to continue.

How to REALLY Do a Perfect Plank - RKC School of Strength

How to REALLY Do a Perfect Plank - RKC School of Strength | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it

When I first started learning kettlebells, there was a common cue I heard from all of them. It was “Squeeze your glutes like you have a quarter between them.” This cue came along with “flex your quads and brace your core.” But the “Squeeze your glutes” cue really stuck with me.

Well, what I came up with is, how a plank should really be done. How a plank is actually the key to getting your abs to fire. How a plank is biomechanically necessary to master many bodyweight movements. How a plank can prep the body to do many of the exercises in Convict Conditioning. I will also relate how a plank is extremely functional, or transferable as I say, to a large number of exercises.

Foods & Herbs that Help Combat Adrenal Fatigue

Foods & Herbs that Help Combat Adrenal Fatigue | SELF-HEALTH | Scoop.it
Let’s talk about adrenals! I know a lot of people who are suffering from adrenal issues, usually referred to as adrenal fatigue or adrenal burnout. When you have adrenal fatigue, you always feel tired and run down, no matter how much rest you get. Frustrating right?

So, where are these adrenal glands and what do they do?

Your adrenal glands are about 3 inches wide, pyramid-shaped, and sit right above your kidneys. These glands produce hormones that help us deal with stress. The center of the adrenal gland is called the medulla. It produces the hormone adrenaline which results in epinephrine and norepinephrine. The outer part of the gland, known as the cortex, makes the hormones aldosterone, DHEAs, cortisol, and trace amounts of the hormones testosterone and estrogen. These are busy little glands!
