In some peer production communities, participation is voluntary and non-monetary. They participate because they want to. For example, Wikipedia is a very popular where individuals voluntarily to do research in specific subject areas and post it to Wikipedia. No one commands or order individuals to research and submit articles. They do it because they want to contribute. Another example is the Linux open source software development platform where software programmers voluntarily submit code to the software development project. Again, no one orders or commands programmers to submit code. They do it because they want to contribute.
