Timothy Skorri Correll's insight:

While having multiple Genres does make it easier to classify bands and their diversity, as well as find artists you may like based on similar sounds and structure. It also makes it much harder to find out just how many genres are out there today, and which genre's are similar. The original Genres; Rock, Pop, Classical, Jazz, etc.

As the article states. "Rock is only slightly better than 'Play me some songs that are music."

The list of Genres has become so diluted with sub-genres. Most of which don't really make sense to begin with.

Bent Out of Shape: Has Heavy Metal Become a Joke? | Guitar World | The Overabundance of Music "Genre" | Scoop.it
Heavy metal has lost all form of legitimacy as musical genre. I believe it has evolved, or devolved, to the point where it has become something so ...
Timothy Skorri Correll's insight:

This is a perfect example of how having too many Sub-Genre's can completely ruin an entire wing of music. Everything becomes diluted to a point where the origins of the particular Genre are lost. It stagnates and does not continue to grow. Everything starts to sound the same or it continues to lose what it is to a point where it dissolves into the other major Genres as they expand themselves.

Is It Time We Stop Using Genres?

Is It Time We Stop Using Genres? | The Overabundance of Music "Genre" | Scoop.it
With more and more cross-pollination of genres, maybe it's time to stop labeling music altogether.
Timothy Skorri Correll's insight:

This Article makes a good point by saying, not having Genre's would more than likely expose more people to different kinds of music that they would not be inclined to listen too on their own. Posing the question; Are music Genre's helping or hurting?

Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music | New Home on Techno.org

The guide attempts to depict the chronological order of electronic music genres' appearance. It contains 7 separate parent areas of electronic music to explore - House, Techhno, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore, Downtempo, and Trance.
Timothy Skorri Correll's insight:

This is a neat little application that chronologically depicts not only the Genres of electronic over the years, it also gives information about the particular Genre.

This is great because it shows how Electronic music has grown, and just how different we can get when it comes to music. The problem with this, is it shows just how diluted a single major genre can get. Everything in here is just the Electronica genre.

Showcase: Too many genres

Showcase: Too many genres | The Overabundance of Music "Genre" | Scoop.it
Timothy Skorri Correll's insight:

This is a perfect example of how easy a band can spread across multiple Genre's which can both be a good and bad thing.

Good becuase it is a great marketing tool and being in multiple Genre's gives you a much larger opportunity for a fanbase. However, it can be quite difficult to navigate your particular albums and songs as they may be in seperate Genre's. Also just because a fan likes an album in their Genre, does not mean they will find the rest of your music entertaining.

Timothy Skorri Correll's insight:

This is a list of the wide variety of Genre's that are actually recogized, to give an example as to how wide the range is when it comes to classifying music and bands. Its great because it gives us the option to choose something more specific that we can tailor to our specific traits and emotions. However it can become overwhelming and easy to get lost when trying to find a specific band, especially when each song can be classified in any number of genre's.
