Is coding the new literacy? - Mother Jones

Is coding the new literacy? - Mother Jones | The Other Literacies | Scoop.it

"Unfortunately, the way computer science is currently taught in high school tends to throw students into the programming deep end, reinforcing the notion that code is just for coders, not artists or doctors or librarians. But there is good news: Researchers have been experimenting with new ways of teaching computer science, with intriguing results. For one thing, they've seen that leading with computational thinking instead of code itself, and helping students imagine how being computer savvy could help them in any career, boosts the number of girls and kids of color taking—and sticking with—computer science. Upending our notions of what it means to interface with computers could help democratize the biggest engine of wealth since the Industrial Revolution."

The 8 Digital Skills Students Need for The Future | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

The 8 Digital Skills Students Need for The Future | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | The Other Literacies | Scoop.it

In a recent research article published by PEW Internet under the title " The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing and How Writing is Taught in Schools ", 91% of teachers surveyed report that " judging the quality of information " as the top of the digital skills students need for the future. Similarly, another 91 report that "writing effectively" as being essential skill for students while 54 % of teachers think that working with audio, video or graphic content as being important but not essential.

Reading these stats together with other sections in this research  made me think that the teachers surveyed in this study  ( so as not to fall in the blander of generalization ) put digital citizenship on top of the continuum of digital skills ; in other words, knowing how to use web tools comes secondary to knowing the reasons for which to use them, or at least that is how I interpret it. Have a look at the graph below and try to read the entire report to learn more about this study.

Search 80,0000 Media History Digital Library Artifacts ~ Free Technology for Teachers

Search 80,0000 Media History Digital Library Artifacts ~ Free Technology for Teachers | The Other Literacies | Scoop.it

by Richard Byrne

"The Media History Digital Library is a massive archive of documents about the history film, television, and radio. The library can now be searched and the documents viewed online through MHDL's new site called the Lantern. On Lantern you will find reviews and critiques of movies, books and playbills, many periodicals about the movie, television, and radio industries. Your search can be refined according to date, language, and publication type. You can also browse through collections curated by MHDL.

Applications for Education

"Two thoughts came to mind as I browsed through MHDL's Lantern. First, it's obviously an excellent resource for students studying the history and development of media. Second, through MHDL's Lantern you could find some good examples of how to write a critique. Your students could use those as models for writing their own critiques of movies or even of books."

UK: Embedding digital literacies | UCL E-Learning Environments team blog

UK: Embedding digital literacies | UCL E-Learning Environments team blog | The Other Literacies | Scoop.it

I’ve been at the July meeting of Jisc’s Learning and Teaching Practice Experts Group (aspiring expert, in my case).

The day began with an overview of outcomes from the E-Learning Programme, pointing us to the Design Studio as a repository of programme outputs – tools, activity designs, models, and a synthesis report of outcomes from Jisc’s Curriculum Design Programme.

Sarah Davies summarised the Changing The Learning Landscape Programme (CLL), a multi-organisation collaboration to mainstream outcomes from the projects in Jisc’s E-Learning Programme. The projects challenge existing assumptions and imply a change of practice. Without good management processes, change is liable to be resisted. Resources from these projects are available at The Design Studio where you can find – among other things - Manchester Metropolitan’s groundbreaking work on technologies fit for the practicalities of assessment, including double and blind marking. It’s always worth keeping in mind that while institutions need to change, the technologies also have a long way to go.

Amazon launches Storyteller to turn scripts into storyboards -- automagically

Amazon launches Storyteller to turn scripts into storyboards -- automagically | The Other Literacies | Scoop.it

Excerpt from review article by VentureBeat:
"Upload your script, choose some backgrounds, and magically created a professional-looking storyboard of your movie. Or the graphic novel version of your text-based anything.

Amazon Studios released Storyteller today to allow writers and filmmakers to quickly, easily — and cheaply — storyboard their scripts.

Roy Price, Amazon’s director of Studios said: “Storyteller provides a digital backlot, acting troupe, prop department, and assistant editor — everything you need to bring your story to life.”

You start by uploading a script to Amazon Studios — or by playing with one that’s already there. Then simply page through the script paragraph by paragraph. Storyteller will try to match up characters, props, and background with the words in each chunk of text, and it does a surprisingly good job.

But if you don’t like what Storyteller gives, you can choose from its library, or even upload your own custom background or characters. Currently, the software has a library of thousands of props, characters, and backgrounds..."

For the Educators and Learners who believe in the importance of communication:

Infographics are one of viral contemporary modes of communication on the web. Infographics harken back to Poster Sessions at professional conferences, but have a wider spread popularity among the exploding population of people publishing their thoughts to the web. Infographics are also becoming popular for classroom activities – especially STEAM activities: Building Infographics to report out on a topic/issue/condition. Think of them as another way for students to vet information, organize that information, and communicate in a digital design format. One aspect of Infographics (and one that is lacking on most of the Philosophical Chairs activities observed from a science teacher's perspective) is research, data, and citing sources.

10 Wonderful Virtual Field Trips for your Students | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | The Other Literacies | Scoop.it

t's Spring now, flowers are coming out and the weather is getting better, hopefully no more snow. Teachers are getting ready for field trips and students are over excited about them.

Unfortunately, there are times when taking a field trip with students is not possible and in cases such as these, technology can compensate for it. Using the websites below, teachers will be able to take their students on wonderful virtual trips to see and visit places that could not probably visit in real.

Check out the resources I have for you below and let me know what you think of them. Enjoy
