FACT CHECK: Did Congress Designate Confederate Soldiers as United States Veterans?

FACT CHECK: Did Congress Designate Confederate Soldiers as United States Veterans? | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
It’s no coincidence that many of these changes in attitude and law, and the erection of so many Confederate monuments and memorials, occurred around the turn of the 20th century. They followed the federal withdrawal from the South in 1877, a strategic retreat from the failed policies of reconstruction.
When a debate over Confederate monuments and flags came under the national spotlight in June 2015, codified changes in burials and pensions enacted in 1929 and 1958 were puffed up to suggest that a nebulous act of Congress, either in the 1920s or the 1950s, officially declared that Confederate soldiers were the same as United States veterans in the eyes of the federal government. However, no legislation either explicitly or implicitly granted Confederate soldiers status as United States veterans. Survivors of dead Confederate soldiers often took offense at measures appearing to equate them to Union soldiers, objections that died off as Southerners from the Civil War era did.

Paula Simons: Removing Frank Oliver's name would whitewash Edmonton's history

Instead of whitewashing our history, it's more honest and instructive to leave Frank Oliver's monuments up.

Via Mr. MacCollum
Rob Duke's insight:
I agree.  There's value in having "frank", no pun intended, discussions about the cultural attitudes that existed previously and how that deprived society of valuable cultural and other benefits of having these immigrant voices in the community.  This discussion might save future generations from making, or tolerating, the same mistakes.

To what extent should can we correct the mistakes of our past? This led in some part to the confrontations in Charlottesville last month, but this question still reverberates much more locally. Here is a look at the Edmonton debate.

Noam Chomsky Crushes Left's Antifa Narrative

Noam Chomsky Crushes Left's Antifa Narrative | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
MIT linguistics professor, anti-capitalist activist and leftist icon Noam Chomsky disrupted the narrative being pushed by his colleagues on the Left about the "anti-fascist" Antifa movement. Rather than being the heroic defenders of the disenfranchised against the forces of fascism, as the left-leaning media is attempting to portray them, Chomsky described the group as a "major gift to the Right," "often wrong in principle," and "generally self-destructive."

The frequently violent, free speech-suppressing Antifa has become the darling of the left-wing media after the horrific events in Charlottesville and President Trump's insistence on blaming both the alt-right and the "alt-Left" for the violence. The famous professor talked with the Washington Examiner about the movement and pointed out several ugly realities that many liberals are willfully ignoring.
Rob Duke's insight:
Chomsky's the other name you need to know (besides Cohen) in the Moral Panic topic.

Boston Police said they arrested 33 people at the Boston free speech rally Saturday that resulted in violence against police more than two hours after the rally ended.

Three of the people arrested had knives and another one had a firearm. WCVB TV reported that three people arrested were wearing bulletproof vests and one of the vest-wearing people had a firearm.

The vast majority of the arrests were for causing a disturbance and resisting arrest. Six people were charged with assault and battery. There were 23 people arrested at the Charlottesville rally on July 8.

DNC Fraud Lawsuit is the Biggest Story in Politics that No One is Talking About

DNC Fraud Lawsuit is the Biggest Story in Politics that No One is Talking About | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
The plaintiffs have filed a class action suit on behalf of three classes of people, arguing that the DNC must return all donations given in the 2016 cycle to Bernie Sanders Donors, DNC Donors and Democrats in general. Why? They claim the DNC defrauded donors in the 2016 primary by failing to remain neutral during the contest. Article 5 section 4 of the DNC bylaws states:

CHARTER

Chairperson, the designated Vice Chair as provided for in Article Two, Section 12(b) of the Bylaws, or the next highest ranking officer of the National Committee present at the meeting shall preside. Section 4. The National Chairperson shall serve full time and shall receive such compensation asmay be determined by agreement between the Chairperson and the Democratic National Committee. In the conduct and management of the affairs and procedures of the Democratic National Committee, particularly as they apply to the preparation and conduct of the Presidential nomination process, the Chairperson shall exercise impartiality and evenhandedness as between the Presidential candidates and campaigns. The Chairperson shall be responsible for ensuring that the national officers and staff of the Democratic National Committee maintain impartiality and evenhandedness during the Democratic Party Presidential nominating process.

Beck and Beck cite the hacked emails from Wikileaks as evidence of Democratic Party leaders tampering with the primary process. Few people are surprised that the Democratic party leadership favored Hillary Clinton in 2016. New DNC Chair Tom Perez admitted as much in a Freudian slip during a speech earlier this year. Some of that was to be expected, Hillary Clinton was a Democrat in good standing, Bernie Sanders was not a Democrat, and was essentially the “ally” who shows up three weeks before a protest march expecting a leadership position because he brought his Dad’s pick-up truck.

Police Report Contradicts ‘Hate Crime’ Narrative In Milwaukee Attack On Muslim Woman

Police Report Contradicts ‘Hate Crime’ Narrative In Milwaukee Attack On Muslim Woman | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
A Muslim woman who was attacked by a stranger in Milwaukee in April told police that she did not believe that she was targeted because of her religion, a statement which is at odds with how her story was portrayed in the media by local and national Muslim civil rights groups.

“In this attack of the Muslim woman, we know of no evidence that would indicate that this attack was anything but a hate crime,” Munjed Ahmad, a lawyer for the woman and board member of American Muslims for Palestine, claimed at a press conference held on April 14, four days after the 58-year-old woman was assaulted while walking home from prayer services at the Islamic Society of Milwaukee.

But police incident reports, obtained by TheDC through an open records request, paint a different picture.

Alaska Supreme Court says attorney’s claim against Legislature was ‘creative advocacy,’ not frivolous

Alaska Supreme Court says attorney’s claim against Legislature was ‘creative advocacy,’ not frivolous | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
The Alaska Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a lower court's sanction against an Anchorage attorney who sought a whistleblower payment for saving the state millions of dollars though a lawsuit.

Though no state law provides for such a payment, the Supreme Court ruled that attorney Jim Gottstein's claim against the state amounted to "creative advocacy" and was not "frivolous."

The 4-1 ruling, written by Justice Peter Maassen, stems from a lawsuit filed in 2015 by Gottstein challenging a no-bid lease extension by the Alaska Legislature for its downtown Anchorage office space on West Fourth Avenue.
Rob Duke's insight:
The power of the sword; the power of the purse; the power of the word.  We worry so much about the power of coercion (rightly so, because of the excesses of the past), but the power of influence through persuasion and reciprocity/exchange is also formidable and subject to abuse.  See Gordon Tullock's "rent-seeking behavior" and William Ker Muir's discussion of power.

Boston ‘antifa’ group lists pro-police symbol with hate symbols

Boston ‘antifa’ group lists pro-police symbol with hate symbols | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it

The Boston “antifa” group lumped the thin blue line pro-police symbol with a list of white nationalist, neo-nazi and alt-right logos, enraged NYPD union officials said Monday.

The thin blue line symbol is used to show support for law enforcement and commemorate fallen members who died in the line of duty and has become a symbol of police pride across the country and abroad. However, during the antifa protests in Boston over the weekend, it was shown on one of their posters as a symbol of hate to watch out for, next to images of an alt-right flag and a neo-nazi flag.

Rob Duke's insight:
The first groups that are censured are always the legitimate public administration and the legitimate law enforcement.

Jason Kessler

Jason Kessler | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
Relying on familiar tropes of “white genocide” and “demographic displacement,” white nationalist blogger Jason Kessler seeks notoriety with his "Unite the Right" march in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Rob Duke's insight:
Kessler, the organizer for the Charlotte "White Supremist" group was actually involved in Soros "Occupy Wall St." movement and a young Democratic supporter for President Obama, but switched his allegiance in 2016.  Makes for some suspicious origins for this supposed "race riot".
We may look back on this in the decades ahead and shake our heads about the national group psychosis that we allowed to sway the public heart.
See Stanley Cohen's work (1927) where he showed that a Moral Panic can come from the lower classes to attempt to shake up the existing power structure; or, it can result from the middle classes' fear that their position is at risk and act as a tool to shore up that position; or, the Moral Panic is a tool of the elite to pit the lower levels of society against each other; thereby distracting them from the excesses and abuses of the elite.

Protesters topple Confederate soldier statue in downtown Durham

Protesters topple Confederate soldier statue in downtown Durham | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
A protest in downtown Durham on Monday night left a statue of a Confederate soldier erected nearly a century ago crumpled on the ground.
Rob Duke's insight:
Taken from either Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals or from Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, taking other people's freedom of expression and ability to participate in the public discussion is a tool of the organizer to use the power of the mob to seize power.  No good comes from destroying civil society.
See also Stanley Cohen's Moral Panics...1972.  There's a reason one group is pitted against another and it rarely has to do with the outward issue--it's usually about redistributing or maintaining power in some way.

CNN accepts resignations of 3 involved in retracted story | Moral Panics, Rent-Seeking Behavior & Fake News | Scoop.it
CNN, in initially taking down the story, said it didn't meet its editorial standards. The episode is a damaging blow for a network that Trump has frequently derided as "fake news," and for a story that never even made it onto any of CNN's television networks.

The story had been quickly questioned both internally and externally, including by the conservative site Breitbart News. It was determined that the story was posted without going through the expected checks and balances for a story of such sensitivity, the executive said.

The failure to follow proper procedures is what led to the resignations, the CNN executive said.
