Libraries as Coworking Spaces: Understanding User Motivations and Perceived Barriers to Social Learning | The New Library and Library Technology | Scoop.it

This project aimed to inform design strategies for smart space technology to enhance libraries as environments for coworking and informal social learning. The focus was on understanding user motivations, behaviour, and activities in the library when there is no programmed agenda.

More and more libraries are removing bookshelves to make way for infrastructure and interior design elements (e.g. lounge areas, couches, meeting rooms, whiteboards, projectors, video consoles, cafés and food bars) aiming to facilitate social learning, open sharing and collaboration among their users. Is this the future of libraries?

Libraries Partner with Local Airports

Libraries Partner with Local Airports | The New Library and Library Technology | Scoop.it

espite the recent recession, Hudson Group, which operates Hudson Newsstands in airports and other transit hubs around the country, has expanded its presence in America’s airports in recent years, opening more newsstand locations and taking over former Borders bookstores. But their limited selection, pricing, and lack of ebook offerings mean they’re not meeting the reading needs of all travelers. To fill that gap, libraries are seeking permission to land in airports around the world.

Latest Stupid DRM Idea: Ebooks With Corrupted Texts That Vary By Customer | Techdirt

Latest Stupid DRM Idea: Ebooks With Corrupted Texts That Vary By Customer | Techdirt | The New Library and Library Technology | Scoop.it

It is extraordinary how companies have failed to grasp three basic facts about DRM: that DRM only needs to be broken once, and it is broken everywhere, thanks to the Internet; that DRM is always broken at least once; and that once DRM is broken, anything still with that DRM is effectively worth less than zero -- since copies freely available online never have DRM. Despite these inconvenient truths, copyright companies continue to hope that there is some magic technology that will "protect" them from the pirates. Here's the latest forlorn attempt to do that, as reported by paidContent:

Germany's Fraunhofer Institute is working on a new ebook DRM dubbed SiDiM that would prevent piracy by changing the actual text of a story, swapping out words to make individualized copies that could be tracked by the original owner of the ebook.

This kind of fingerprinting is hardly new: it's used for music, and also for documents where people wish to track the origin of any leaks. But as paidContent points out:

Holyoke to promote child literacy by creating 'mini-libraries' at police substations, stocking cruisers with books

Holyoke to promote child literacy by creating 'mini-libraries' at police substations, stocking cruisers with books | The New Library and Library Technology | Scoop.it

"The catch phrase "Book 'em, Danno" will take on a new meaning as the city bolsters its child literacy efforts by stocking police substations and cruisers with reading materials for children and families.

"As part of the city's Early Literacy Initiative, Chief Neiswanger and I announced today that all of our city's community policing substations will also serve as 'mini libraries' where children and families can get free books," Mayor Alex B. Morse wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday.

Officers will also receive books to keep on hand in their patrol cars, to hand out to children around the city."
