CPS has libraries—but where are the librarians?

CPS has libraries—but where are the librarians? | The New Library and Library Technology | Scoop.it

"Even after all the school closings, CPS still can't find the money to hire librarians for about half its schools."

In other words, we don't have a shortage of certified librarians. We have a shortage of money to pay the librarians.

But just to double check, I called Marci Merola, an official with the American Library Association, which happens to be located right here in Chicago.

"If Barbara Byrd-Bennett is looking for certified librarians, I can send her a bunch of resumes of librarians who are looking for jobs," Merola said. "There are many universities graduating librarians every year."

So there you have it Ms. Byrd-Bennett—call Marci! You can find her number in the book.

Cost-cutting effort attempts to save four Hertfordshire County (England) libraries by relocating them to "modern new facilities" in village fire stations.

"Richard Thake, cabinet member for community safety, said: “Fire stations and libraries are both at the heart of the communities they serve and it makes perfect sense to use spare space at our village fire stations to support other important local services.

“This scheme will help to guarantee the long-term future of both our local fire stations and local libraries. It’s a great example of how public services can work together creatively to improve value for money.”

This program allows seniors at two nursing homes and an independent living facility to have access to museum collections without having to leave their homes or the local library. Using Skype as the communication vehicle it allows seniors to ask questions and explore their local cultural institutions. What a great model to be expanded to other cultural institutions and other library systems.

The DPLA Metadata Application Profile (MAP) is designed to build on the experience of the Europeana Data Model (EDM). It incorporates feedback from the DPLA community and digital hub pilot participants to create a balanced framework that allows us to accommodate existing and emerging data models for library, archive, and museum resources.

DPLA MAP Version 3 is targeted towards exposing contributed metadata via the current version of the DPLA API. We anticipate continuing to evolve this model over time in response to ongoing community input and to extend the functionality provided by the DPLA in its API and its public portal.
