The SWIB conference (Semantic Web in Libraries, German: "Semantic Web in Bibliotheken") is an annual conference focusing on Semantic Web and Linked Open Data (LOD) in the library world. It is held by turns in the Cologne region and Hamburg. The topics of talks and workshops at SWIB revolve around opening data, linking data and creating tools and software for LOD production scenarios. These areas of focus are supplemented by presentations of research projects in applied sciences, industry applications, and LOD activities in other areas. SWIB mainly targets IT staff, developers, librarians and researchers.

Trudy Raymakers's curator insight, March 31, 1:10 AM

The DPLA Metadata Application Profile (MAP) is designed to build on the experience of the Europeana Data Model (EDM). It incorporates feedback from the DPLA community and digital hub pilot participants to create a balanced framework that allows us to accommodate existing and emerging data models for library, archive, and museum resources.

DPLA MAP Version 3 is targeted towards exposing contributed metadata via the current version of the DPLA API. We anticipate continuing to evolve this model over time in response to ongoing community input and to extend the functionality provided by the DPLA in its API and its public portal.

A starting point blog | National Library of Australia | The New Library | Scoop.it

There are so many stories about Australia yet to be told. Trove’s job is to help you find them.

In preparation for this shiny new blog we spent a fair bit of time hunting through the Trove pictures zone looking for an image we could use to represent what it is we actually do. What is Trove? You can see one of the photos we found below. This, I suspect, is how many of our users see us – purveyors of Australian newspapers to the world. And fair enough. The Trove newspapers zone currently contains more than 120 million articles and receives about 70% of our web traffic. But Trove is much more.

Our Favorite Things: Musical Libraries | Library as Incubator Project | The New Library | Scoop.it

Libraries collect music, libraries host music, librarians moonlight as musicians and offer patrons spaces to create their own mixes . . . Which is to say, the “silent library” trope is so outdated. Here are some of our favorite musical libraries!

Libraries aid older people in search for computer knowledge, BY Eric Peddigree - NewsItem

Libraries aid older people in search for computer knowledge, BY Eric Peddigree - NewsItem | The New Library | Scoop.it

"As the world shifts to the digital age, a knowledge of computers is becoming an essential part of life.

The group having possibly the hardest transition is the elderly. The technology hasn't been a part of their lives as much as it has for younger people.

To help the elderly ease into the digital world, local libraries offer assistance to learn the ever advancing technology. Whether it is computers or e-readers, library staffs deal with people trying to find comfort using these tools on a daily basis.

At the Frackville Free Public Library, free computer classes are held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday for people ages 55 and older. The hour is designated to help people learn basic computer skills, such as operating the machine or using the Internet."

Science Experiments for Kids: CERN accelerates Future Library initiative in Greece

Science Experiments for Kids: CERN accelerates Future Library initiative in Greece | The New Library | Scoop.it

Future Library is a non-profit organization funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundationwhich aims to develop a sustainable network of public and municipal libraries to act as unique hubs for creativity, innovation and learning across Greece.
Over the last two years, Future Library with the collaboration of Google, Aarchus City Library and the Mozilla Foundation have been working on the creation of Media Labs in nine public libraries to reinforce their significance as knowledge, creativity and interaction-promoting centres. Within a Media Lab, people can get immersed in a range of creative activities such as producing a video, recording a song, creating a digital story and accessing exclusive digital content in an attractive and comfortable space. Library staff, trained by Future Library, support these activities by creating new youth-oriented services and working with people and organizations across their region.
