How Street Artist Vhils Creates a Mural

How Street Artist Vhils Creates a Mural | the mural archive project | Scoop.it
The renowned Portuguese artist shares a first draft
The son of a dissident in Portugal’s Carnation Revolution, the Lisbon-born street artist Alexandre Farto, a.k.a. Vhils, first rose to prominence when one of his portraits appeared next to a work by Banksy at the 2008 Cans Festival in London. Now, at 24, he’s the youngest artist represented by Banksy’s agent, Steve Lazarides, whose gallery website says Vhils is “taking Vandalism as art to its logico ad absurdum conclusion.” Though he works on wood, metal, walls, and billboards, and with a variety of media—most recently a mixture of ink and bleach—his subject is almost always the same: the faces of anonymous city residents. Exhibited at shows like “Grifters” (London, 2009) and “Shadows and Reflections” (Paris, 2011), these depictions of steely-gazed urbanites occupy billboards and walls once reserved for a a certain kind of "1 percent": celebrities, models, and politicians.

Here, Vhils shares a sketch for a portrait, and describes the “Scratching the Surface” method he uses to translate his works from paper to walls, and to create art through destruction......

The making of a street art mural: Interview with Montreal artist Reuben Peter-Finley (photos)

Montreal is known for its cobblestone streets, fine dining and shopping– but the “City of Saints” is also a Mecca for street art.

I was shopping in the funky Plateau neighborhood during a recent girl’s getaway weekend when something caught my eye. A lone artist was painting a massive portrait on the wall of a book store and the locals were hardly batting an eye. Needless to say, I postponed my shopping plans and lunged for my camera.

The artist, Reuben Peter-Finlay, was blending oil sticks with his fingers to create a tribute to French-Canadian activists Gérald Godin and Pauline Julien.

Beyond the Mural: Unconventional Street Art

Beyond the Mural: Unconventional Street Art | the mural archive project | Scoop.it

Street art is not your typical graffiti. I love browsing through street art photos and am constantly blown away by the sheer creativity of street artists. The concepts that these artists dream up are endless and always unique, and vary from photo to photo by wide margins. Murals are beautiful and expansive, colorful and emotive. There is something about street art that resonates with people — perhaps it serves as a reminder that they are not the only ones living in a particular city, and that someone cares enough to create something beautiful and thought-provoking for all to see....

Fleeting Street Art: Fairey Mural Obscured

Fleeting Street Art: Fairey Mural Obscured | the mural archive project | Scoop.it

Construction project in Hillcrest appears likely to completely
block out the Shepard Fairey mural commissioned as part of a street
art show last year.

The building adjacent to the Urban Outfitters building, whose side wall the mural covers, was demolished recently. Now construction crews are working on a new building that appears it will entirely block out the embattled Fairey mural. The temporary mural was one of the centerpieces of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's "Viva la Revolución" street art exhibition last fall....
