This week we’ll be looking at the more unscrupulous things that have taken place in the name of science
Nelia Beth Scovill, Ph.D.'s insight:

In this article, the author identifies five incidents he views as unethical/immoral.  However, because he doesn't provide any reasons why he classifies them as such, he hasn't yet made an argument for 1) what was wrong about the actions or 2) why they were the worst.

 

Here's today challenge:  take one of the actions, and give reasons for why they were wrong.  Can you think of other actions done in the name of science that were worse?

The central philosophical problem of modern democracy is the clash between natural law theory and social justice theory.

While this claims to be just a comparison ("The thesis of this essay is that natural law theory is irreconcilable with social justice theory. If the thesis is true, liberals and conservatives will never agree.") it is in fact an argument against the social justic theory approach.

A good example of a clear statement of a conservative's vision of the common good.

"To me, the pillars of a decent society are (1) respect for the human person (and that means every member of the human family, including the child in the womb, the mentally and physically impaired, and the frail and elderly); (2) the marriage-based family and the other institutions of civil society, religious and secular, that support and assist the family in its essential health, education, and welfare functions; and (3) a fair, uncorrupted, and effective system of law and government."
