Frontiers | Mental representation and motor imagery training | Frontiers in Human Neuroscience

Research in sports, dance and rehabilitation has shown that Basic Action Concepts (BACs) are fundamental building blocks of mental action representations. BACs are based on chunked body postures related to common functions for realizing action goals. In this paper, we outline issues in research methodology and an experimental method, SDA-M (structural dimensional analysis of mental representation), to assess action-relevant representational structures that reflect the organization of BACs. The SDA-M reveals a strong relationship between cognitive representation and performance if complex actions are performed. We show how the SDA-M can improve motor imagery training and how it contributes to our understanding of coaching processes. The SDA-M capitalizes on the objective measurement of individual mental movement representations before training and the integration of these results into the motor imagery training. Such motor imagery training based on mental representations has been applied successfully in professional sports such as golf, volleyball, gymnastics, windsurfing, and recently in the rehabilitation of patients who have suffered a stroke.
Mike Margolies's insight:

This is likely more than most people want to read about mental imagery in sports. I post it here because this is what we in sport psychology have been doing for decades. Researching both in the lab and in the field the effects of imagery on performance. The use of imagery to increase performance outcomes is not some woo-woo science or pop psych endeavor. It's science and it's one tool we use in sport psychology / mental training to help athletes perform at the next level.

25 Life Lessons From Albert Einstein

25 Life Lessons From Albert Einstein | THE MENTAL GAME | Scoop.it
Albert Einstein was more than just a scientist. Here are 25 amazing life lessons coming from the man himself!
1. Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.
2. Everyone should be respected as an individual, but no one idolized.
3.  Never do anything against conscience
Mike Margolies's insight:

I've used Einstein in blogs and with clients for decades. Whenever I find a post like this I like to re-post because of the lessons you can find in his one liners. (even if some are redefined). These apply to both sports and business pursuits.

Mike Margolies's insight:

Interesting discussion on when an athlete works with a mental trainer / sport psychology consultant. Personally I don't work with 9 year old kids. 12 is usually the youngest. At 9 they should be having fun even in competitive gymnastics. Even if it is hard core competitive, If it's not fun something more is wrong. maybe the coach is the wrong coach for the child. Maybe the parents are putting too much stress on the athlete, but at ages 7-10 it's too early for me to want to work with these young developing athletes. Now maybe that is just me. I work better with teens and adults. Yes I see a need to introduce mental skills training for young athletes. This can be in group settings working with the coach.

Here is the extreme version of the 2 C's I have written about before, Conviction & Commitment.  The Marathon Monks are are fanatical and yet there is something we can learn from them. To be clear I am referring to their conviction & commitment, not to their actions and / or consequences of failure. Via J. Kip Matthews
Mike Margolies's insight:

I appreciate much about this post, though I will disagree with the emphasis. By categorizing what we do as mental health services instead of focusing on mental skills he helps perpetuate the issues he is trying to alleviate. If we were to provide athletes to handle the challenges and pressures of sport, rather than helping them avoid mental health issues we would in essence accomplish the same goals. By referring to things as a mental health issue he helps distance sport psychology away from many who simply need a new skill.
