One of the biggest drawbacks of using Medium for business purposes is its lack of support for link building SEO efforts. Any outbound links by default carry “rel=nofollow” attributes, which poses two problems, the first being that all of your hard work is contributing to Medium’s authority score, not your own domain, and two, link building efforts are not possible. As a result, your content will only be as valuable as the traffic that is driven to your website by clicking on outbound links. I'm not saying that this limitation is ineffective in helping gain organic reach, but it severely limits the shelf life of your content and provides no help in growing your domain's SEO efforts.

Beyond the issues with the platforms SEO capabilities is its terms of service. I don’t believe that the team at Medium ever plans to do anything nefarious with your content, but their terms of service states that they are free to use your content in any manner that they would like (Medium Terms of Service).

The following five modern characteristics of marketing, if used properly, can increase the persuasive power of any marketing campaigns:

  • Authority. Rooted in Ethos, the modern appeal to authority is all about demonstrating your trustworthiness, experience, or values as a brand. 
  • Emotion. This is Pathos, the emotional side of persuasion. The goal here is to tap into a powerful human emotion to make your arguments more compelling, whatever they might be. 
  • Logic. The logical appeal, Logos, is less colorful and requires less creativity than an authoritative or emotional appeal. That's because logical arguments are rooted in facts and data. 
  • Impulse. The appeal to impulse is one of my "new" modes of persuasion, and I refer to it because of the fleeting nature of consumer attention today. Accordingly, you need to apply a sense of urgency—a sense of impulse—to your persuasive methods. 
  • Social. Some 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations, so include any reviews and testimonials you can in your messaging, and get involved actively on social media (though that should be a given).

This is adding new wrinkles for CIOs selected by CEOs to build platforms that deliver on a digital strategy. In some companies, CIOs are partnering on these strategies with CDOs and CMOs. In other, CDOs have taken the digital reins. Gartner said 25 percent of large companies will have CDOs by 2017.

At many companies, marketing and IT have long enjoyed a contentious relationship, with the CMO striving to move fast to get ahead of customer trends with little concern for business risks, leaving the CIO scrambling to pump the breaks. But as customers prefer to connect with their brands digitally, CIOs and CMOs find themselves working together rather than at cross purposes.
