Here’s what’s interesting: as the co-founder and CMO of an B2B account-based automation company called Terminus, it has quickly come to my attention how little representation there is for the account-based marketing (ABM) industry on these sites. In fact, ABM hardly has a presence at all. I find this particularly surprising given the amount of buzz around account-based marketing and advertising — and the number of players that are currently dominating the ABM landscape, including big names like DemandBase and Bizo.

The thing is, there is a market demand for account-based marketing, and we see it every day (according to Matt Senatore, Research Director at SiriusDecisions, ABM generated enough global search traffic in only 12 months to appear on Google Trends). As the B2B selling landscape continues to evolve, buyers are looking for more customer-centric solutions, and customer-centricity is what account-based marketing is all about. In fact, account-based marketing requires flipping the funnel completely on its head (feel free to join the #FlipMyFunnel revolution) so that the customer comes first, making it the perfect solution for buyers that are looking for ways to better meet their customers’ needs.

And so, we come back to my original question. With account-based marketing showing many of the same signs and growth patterns as familiar industries like cloud computing and marketing automation (high growth, but low penetration), it won’t be long before we see ABM become a category of its own in the minds of analysts and business people alike.

More than 90 Percent of Marketers Believe that Account-Based Marketing is a B2B Must-Have - DemandBase | The Marketing Technology Alert | Scoop.it
Demandbase's Marketing Innovation Summit for B2B, SiriusDecisions unveiled the results of its 2015 State of Account-Based Marketing (ABM) Study. The survey reveals that ABM is essential to improving sales and marketing alignment, but many marketers believe they lack the support needed to succeed at ABM. While 92 percent of companies recognize the value in ABM, going as far as calling it a B2B marketing must-have, only 20 percent have had full programs in place for more than one year. The study shows wider adoption is expected with more than 60 percent planning to invest in technology for ABM to better align sales and marketing over the next twelve months.

Additional findings include:

  • Strong sales and marketing alignment with ABM: All companies practicing ABM claim to be at least somewhat aligned with sales, with 34 percent saying they were tightly aligned.
  • High willingness of companies to try ABM: Companies in the study see the value of ABM, with 52 percent of respondents currently having pilot programs in place.
  • Sales involvement is high: 74 percent of respondents work with sales to define account goals and plans, and 67 percent get help from sales on account insights.
  • Where marketers have more alignment has to do with their peers: Respondents said just 46 percent are getting help with ABM from other marketing functions.
  • Major skills gap: 47 percent of companies surveyed say that they don't feel their ABM teams have the skills needed for ABM and that marketing teams need more support to succeed at ABM.

iNeoMarketing's insight:

Oracle seems a bit of a stretch: (1) it would suck up a good part of their cash, and (2) it would run up against antitrust. Microsoft certainly has the cash, and investors have wanted them to put it to use. But the Google rumor is the best one: (1) they have the cash; (2) their advertising business growth rate has slowed; (3) and they've had previous partnerships that have been positive, i.e., they can work together.


What I haven't seen is an outside investor coming in, leveraging the assets, and selling it off as parts. The Marketing Cloud could be far more valuable on its own than as a part of the mothership.


Regardless, once this gets rolling, it's hard to stop.
