In this article Khan discusses the conceptual computer presented by Ericson Company.

 

Ericson Company plans to develop a holographic styled computer, complete with laser keyboard and projected monitor. The main objective of the device is to take portability to the next level by providing a pocket outlet for computation. With the progression of technology it is evident that this will be developed successfully in the foreseeable future. However, I have read other articles which have discussed that computers will become more cognitive rather than a succession of processing data; that computers in the future will be able to have a sense of touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. This ‘Spider Computer’ does not seem to have cognitive capability and it can be contemplated whether or not it will be obsolete in the future. This article will not be of much use to my research as there is not enough supporting background information I can interpret. Nevertheless it is still interesting to see these ideas for the future of technology.

when holograms is said people immidiately think about the future, this article shows a new device that will be avaliable in 7 years, it is a computer but projected from a small "spider computer". Both the advantages and disadvantages of this device are listed in the article.

The progression of technology is all about taking development that one step further. Over the course of time in previous years we have seen an increase in human to technology interaction. In particular, touch screen technologies have become widely popular and widely accepted in this technological world. So why not take it that one step further? The advantages of these kinds of technologies would be the reduction of fingerprints on screens and for effortless movement. The point of technology is simply to make life easier, to create technologies that improve the lives of people by making a computer do more and for humans to do less. With gesture controlled screens people barely have to lift a finger. Many of the newer laptop models have implemented touch screen displays. The awkwardness of going from keyboard to screen and screen to keyboard will cease to exist. There are already rumours of cell phones having eye gesture interactment. With that statement it is evident we will most definitely see an increase of these kinds of technologies starting from now and beyond. This article will be of great use in my essay as it has enough evidence to suggest it is worth discussing as an advancement we can expect to see in the future.

"IBM Says Computers Will Have All Five Senses In Five Years" - IBM December 19, 2012. I personally believe with how rapidly technology is growing it is possible to have cognitive computers. However, I am not entirely sure if five years is accurate. It can be debated that it is very possible with emerging technologies such as the driverless car from Google corporation. People are already seeing an increase in human interactive interfaces such as voice recognition, face recognition and touch screens so it is not a surprise that engineers want to take it that step further by pioneering fully functioning cognitive computers. This upcoming technology could mean a breakthrough from data processing machines into the world of artificial intelligence. This will pave way for computers that are smarter, more efficient and adaptable to certain environments and situations. This article is certainly interesting and useful to my research as it explores a plausible concept in the world of computing. This could be a major technology we can expect to see in the future.

This article discusses technology that can project a touch screen on any given surface. The technology is called 'OmniTouch' and is similar to the X-box Kinect technology. This technology is not going to be a major technology in future because it is close to being available now. The prototype for this product is complete and is currently undergoing tests. The advantage of OmniTouch technology is the ability to increase the size of projection. According to the article, OmniTouch has the capability of choosing optimised display settings for every new surface. The current issue with the prototype is the cumbersome size and shape. This problem is being addressed in future prototypes.

 

In my opinion this new technology can be perceived in two ways… Either it will seem intriguing to users but will decrease in popularity as technology enters an era predominantly surrounded by voice control and gesture control; or the technology will bring great success to mobile computing and portability. This article will contribute to my research into projected touch technologies such as the Ericson’s Company spider device.

The future concept provided by Microsoft is an extreme example of the capabilities and possibilities of technology. I will need to do further research before jumping into conclusions about the technologies featured in Microsoft's future vision video. I will provide my insight based on my first impressions. The video begins with a scene that features two children communicating to each other through a Smart Board. It can be assumed that these two children are living in different parts of the world. If we have a look at the technology we have today, we can see we have Smart Boards in existence. These boards are similar to electronic note taking software seen in tablet devices. You can write, erase, draw, drag, copy, paste and do animation that features a physics engine. The Smart board featured in the video can translate different languages, create animations and project images in a transparent styled panel. Essentially it is a data processing computer, which is the same technology we have available in current Smart Boards. The difference between current Smart Boards and future Smart Boards is that; future Smart Boards will have a greater capacity to interpret an input and output an accurate response. The future vision shows communication through video conferencing. In the present time we have video conferencing through outlets such as 'Skype' and 'Yahoo Messenger'.

 

The technology featured in the video is an advanced computer system with this integration. It can be possible to see this technology in the future because technically, such technologies already exist. As for touch screen paper, there are ipads, smart phones and e-readers available with touch screen capability. There is a possibility paper could be the next step in mobile computing. These are just some of the examples of the contrast between current technology and predicted future technology and with the level of innovation seen in previous years it is not hard to envision the technologies featured in the video to be made a reality. This video will be useful to my assignment but it will require more research if I am to include it into my essay.

A postdoctoral student has developed a technique for implanting thought-controlled robotic arms and their electrodes directly to the bones and nerves of amputees, a move which he is calling “the future of artificial limbs”. The first volunteers will receive their new limbs early in 2013.

 

“The benefits have no precedent,” Max Ortiz Catalan, who carries out research in biomedicine and artificial intelligence at the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, told Wired.co.uk. “They will be able to simultaneously control several joints and motions, as well as to receive direct neural feedback on their actions. These features are today not available for patients outside research labs. Our aim is to change that.”

 

Ordinary myoelectric prostheses work by placing electrodes over the skin to pick up nerve signals that would ordinarily be sent by the brain to the limb. An algorithm then translates these signals, and sends instructions to motors within the electronic limb. Since the electrodes are applied to the skin surface, however, they will undoubtedly encounter countless issues in maintaining the fluid transferal of information back and forth between the brain and the limb. By implanting those electrodes directly to the patient’s nerves, Catalan is hoping to get one step closer than anyone else to replicating natural movement.

The quantified self goes nanoscale with a stick-on silicon electrode network that could not only change the way we measure health metrics, but could enable a new form of user interface. And the researchers behind it aim to have the device available in the next few weeks through a spinoff company, MC10.

 

The development takes wearable technology to the extreme, designed as a non-invasive diagnostic sensor that could be used to measure hydration, activity, and even infant temperature. It bonds to the skin, somewhat like a temporary tattoo, flexing and bending in sync with your skin the way you wish a Band-Aid would. How? Researchers at the University of Illinois, Dalian University of Technology in China, and the University of California at San Diego made it really, really small.

 

With a thickness of 0.8 micrometers at the widest — around one-thousandth the diameter of a human hair — the thin mesh of silicon actually nestles in to the grooves and creases in your skin, even the ones too small to see. Being small helps, but it’s also important that the silicon is laid out in a serpentine pattern and bonded to a soft rubber substrate, allowing the stiff material to flex, a little bit like an accordion.

This article talks about the technology of ‘smart glasses’. We have smart phones and now there are hints that smart glasses will be the next big thing... The particular model discussed in the article is being dubbed as Google Glass’ competitor. Vuzix Corporation has designed ‘Vuxix Smart Glasses M100’ for on the go data access from the internet and from smartphones. The device includes a camera and display. In my opinion it may be the next big thing but I’m not sure how quickly this device will catch on and how comfortable people will be with an everyday device such as this one. There is the concern of privacy; if this device contains a camera and if the general public has access to these devices… Should we be concerned?  One of the capabilities of Google glass is to share locations with social networks. It is uncertain how the general public will feel about that. There is also the issue of the cost. According to the article Vuxix will be commercially available for $500. The rumoured starting price for Google Glass is $1500. This will be quite unconventional for the general public. However, it is arguable to say we spend thousands of dollars on phones and computers… Would this be any different? The area that I feel would affect the social acceptance the most for this product would be the aesthetics of this product. In my personal opinion I would feel slightly uncomfortable to see people wearing these technologies on their face. It is comparable to cyborg, android like beings. Overall, I believe this article is useful to my essay as it discusses what we can look forward to in the future – the start of wearable technologies.

'London 3D printer show: A world of pure (plastic) imagination'  is a video posted to YouTube by CNETTV (October 22, 2012). The video is a presentation of 3D printers featured at the 3D print show in London. Although it is not an entirely new concept (brought to life in 1986), 3D printing has certainly advanced in the progression of technology. Some may question, what use is 3D printing and is it necessary? 3D printers can provide conceptual designers with scale models which is crucial for planning and development, especially in the manufacturing industry. 3D printers are also capable of printing unique shapes and designs generated from computer algorithms this can open doors for greater creativity. The technology doesn't just end there, the printers are able to print moving components and print in great detail which results in accurate creations. Now if we were to take this technology to the next level, just imagine all the possibilities. For example, what if we could print on a much larger scale, such as buildings? Or what if we could print organs? Or medications? The possibilities are endless and the technology to do these things will be around the corner in several years. This video will be beneficial to my essay as it has enough supporting evidence to suggest that 3D printing will be a major technology advancement in the future.

This concept provided by the company "Corning" is hard to interpret. Several questions can be asked; are these technologies possible in the future? Are we anywhere near to developing these kinds of technologies and how will this affect the lives of everyday individuals? Will older generations be ready to interact with technology on this level? It is uncertain. As for the question of how achievable would it be to develop this kind of technology - with touch displays, wireless connections, 3G/4G networks and NFC (near field communication) technology, this concept provided by Corning can be made possible with research and development. The material in this article is interesting and I can draw possible ideas for my essay.

The first item discussed is the idea to make planes rechargeable. With global warming on the rise and concerns for environmental health increasing, it comes with no surprise that this idea was created. There have been some break throughs in the automotive industry in environmentally efficient design. There are developments for electrical or rechargeable cars but there is no product readily available for the mainstream consumer. Evidently, if environmentally friendly cars are still in development it may be some time before rechargeable technology is available to aircrafts. With the above statements there is the need to continue to research further into this topic to gain a better understanding on the possibilities of airline and automotive technology.

Big idea 2 – Fuel the Planet with Micromachines is about using man made molecules for energy. This idea is quite far from development. A micro scale battery will be required for these molecules. This is bigger thinking for a bigger future and not much can be said at this point but I feel to understand the possibility of this technology I should do more research. In my opinion this technology is something to expect in the distant future.

Big idea 3 – Spray Wi-Fi hot spots on everything is an idea about preparing for widespread WiFi. According to Wired, the WiFi and 4G network industry will contribute several trillions of dollars on a global scale by 2020. To keep up with demand Chamtech Enterprises has developed a spray containing millions of nano-capacitors which is more conductive of signals than the standard antennae rod. Personally, I am not sure how I feel about this kind of technology. This research is very useful to my essay by supporting the claim that technology needs to be updated for the purpose of keeping up with high demand.

Big idea 4 – Turn Deserts into Power Plants is not a new idea but many questions have been asked; how do we harness the energy? What is the most optimal way of channelling this energy? and what is the most cost effective way of directing energy to the required destination? With the power of technology there is always an answer.

Big idea 5 – Put Digital Displays in Your Eyes and this article is not talking about the “Google Glass” kind.

Big idea 6 – Declare War on Incoming Asteroids, do we have the technology for this? Are we prepared enough?

Big idea 7 – Build Skyscrapers from Diamonds, as the title suggests the proposition is to consider alternative materials for construction. Diamonds are formed from Carbon, the hardest element known to mankind. Imagine this near indestructible material used for construction the security and aesthetic appeal would be phenomenal. There is technology readily available to manufacture man made diamonds (small diamonds). However, the creation of diamond is a lengthy process and the costs to manufacture diamond on bigger scale would be unbelievably expensive.  This is a great concept, highly ambitious but not currently plausible.

One of the most exciting things about this bioprinter is that it uses low-cost fabrication techniques. This will potentially allow it to be used in economically disadvantaged areas (e.g., developing countries) that might not otherwise have access to such cutting-edge medical technology.

Professor Lee Cronin has turned a 3D printer into a universal chemistry set that could make its own prescription drugs via downloadable chemistry.

 

Cronin is the leader of a world-class team of 45 researchers at Glasgow University, primarily making complex molecules.

 

The “inks” are simple reagents, from which more complex molecules are formed.

 

As he points out, nearly all drugs are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, as well as readily available agents such as vegetable oils and paraffin. “With a printer it should be possible that with a relatively small number of inks you can make any organic molecule,” he says.
