DO YOU FOLLOW A POSITION OR DO YOU FOLLOW WHAT THE PERSON BEHIND OFFERS YOU?

Leadership is no position – it is action, as said through the word!
Leadership – this word comes from the verb “lead” and leading means taking responsibility for other people and caring for them. Leaders take people on a journey, so to say. Positional leaders only see their point of view, their position. They try to control people. They see themselves as the boss.
They rely on their rights.

Now I may ask you:
Do you follow someone who only sees his side of view – who wants to be a leader instead of “leading” and caring for people?
Do you follow titles and positions?
Or do you follow people who are able to convince with their personal and human side and create new leaders in encouraging and supporting others?

BE SELECTIVE WHO YOU FOLLOW!

By the way: 
A good leader sees himself not as a leader!

Man's search for meaning is the primary motivation in his life. We want to know who we are and why we live. We hunger for significance and importance and strive for power and fulfillment. Our will to meaning is immense. We live for our ideals and are nearly able to die for them. 

And it is proven that those people who know that there is a sense in their life are most apt to master their life. 

Viktor E. Frankl, famous for his writings in the field of Psychotherapy confirmed: 
"In the Nazi concentration camps, one could have witnessed that those who knew that there was a task waiting for them to fulfil were most apt to survive."

Frankl himself survived several concentration camps and when he was
taken to the concentration camp of Auschwitz a manuscript of him ready for publication was confiscated. He admitted that the deep desire and will to write this manuscript anew helped him to survive the rigours of the camps he was in. 

In his book "Man's search for meaning" Frankl explains:
"What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal, a freely chosen task. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him. What man needs is not homeostasis but what I call "noö-dynamics", i.e., the existential dynamics in a polar field of tension where one pole is represented by a meaning that is to be fulfilled and the other pole by the man who has to fulfil it." 

In his book Frankl writes as an expert about Logotherapy. He gave his theory the name "logotherapy" with this background: "Logos" is a Greek word which denotes "meaning". Logotherapy focuses on the meaning of human existence as well as on man's search for such a meaning. Logotherapy is a meaning-centered psychotherapy.

It was created by Shalmor Avnon Amichay/Y&R Interactive, Tel Aviv  for Mercedes Benz Israel.

Many people wonder why some people are more successful than others, why they seem to manage everything easily and seem to reach goals faster than others. Why they not only master the daily routine but also master upcoming problems with ease.


These people seem to be able to orientate their mind to every situation.
Like a good military leader who is able to function not only in safe times but also in times of crisis and combat. Such a person is able to adapt to any situation. Being able to be courageous and powerful, but also calm and reflective when needed.


This is only reached with the combination of two different minds:
An open mind that stands for courage and working on things, but also a reflective mind that finds solutions in deep thinking and being calm.

The brain stores and processes information and there is more between brains and computers than may be apparent. Each time we do something – or think of something – whether it is brushing our teeth, walking across the kitchen, contemplating a business problem or coming up with a new idea, we reflect on how we were able to accomplish it.


A good example to raise awareness of how our brain works is this experiment:


-> Recite the alphabet
Result: You remember this from childhood and you can do it easily.


-> Now try this: Recite the alphabet backward.
Result: You have extreme difficulties.


Why? Because we do not remember whole images.


Our memories are sequential and in order. They can only be accessed in
the order that they are remembered. We are unable to directly reverse the sequence of a memory. And we have difficulty starting a memory in the middle of a sequence. When we have learned to play a piece of music on the piano we cannot just begin at an arbritrary point in the middle of the piece.


Next problem:


-> Think about people whom you have encountered only once or twice.
Can you visualize them clearly?


When we have to identify a criminal the police will not ask:
What did the criminal’s eyes look like? Rather, the police will show us a series of images of eyes and will ask to select one.


What does that show?


There are no images, videos, or sound recordings stored in the brain. Our memories are stored as sequences of patterns. And memories that are not accessed dim over time.


Here the best example for our ability to think in patterns and to being able to recognize patterns:


Garry Kasparov, the world chess champion, has indeed learned to remember 100.000 board positions! Armed with that knowledge Kasparov looks at the chessboard and compares the patterns that he sees to all 100.000 board situations that he has mastered and he does all 100.000 comparisons simultaneously. Striking, isn’t it?


Our memories are in fact patterns organized in lists (where each item in each list is another pattern in the cortical hierarchy) that we have learned and then recognize when presented with the appropriate stimulus. Memories exist in the neocortex in order to be recognized.

 

OUR BRAIN IS A FASCINATING ORGAN … WE SHOULD LEARN TO USE IT MORE EFFECTIVELY!

Dharmesh Shah explains confidence like that:

He states 9 qualities of truly confident people:

2. They listen ten times more than they speak.

3. They duck the spotlight so it shines on others.

My opinion:
I have learned that confidence has nothing to do with "I am the best, I master everything" but with "I trust in my abilities, I am humble and I have faith". Confident people don't need the limelight, they sparkle through what they do.

Blogging is a wonderful means to express and to present ourselves – our #expertise and our abilities. Through regular #blogging we are able to improve our #writing #style and quality. People get to know our feelings and emotions and our thoughts. We are able to mediate our imaginations and our inspirations in blogs.  

But regular blogging needs time – time that we often do not have as our lives are sometimes full of obligations. If this lack of time is of greater extent people often think about a #ghostwriter for themselves – for their blogs. They believe this is THE solution. Their problem is solved herewith they assume. They see a ghostwriter as a perfect substitute for writing the own blogs.

This means that one's behavior is related to both one's personal characteristics and to the social situation in which one finds oneself.

Kurt Lewin (1890-1947) was a famous, charismatic psychologist who is now viewed as the father of social psychology.  Born in Germany, Lewin emigrated to the USA as a result of World War II. 

Lewin viewed the social environment as a dynamic field which impacted in an interactive way with human consciousness.  Adjust elements of the social environment and particular types of psychological experience predictably ensue.  In turn, the person's psychological state influences the social field or milieu.

It is so easy to make a judgment about other people – and we too often believe to know what other people might think and how they might react. But the truth is, we never really know what others see and how others feel. We only know our feelings and our point of view exactly and with absolute certainty.


Although we may believe that we instinctively understand how another person feels, it is probably never true. Each human being is different, each of us is unique – in his feelings and in his kind of thinking, we all have different backgrounds and instincts. Two apparently similar people can react in very different ways.


Showing empathy for others is certainly good and always to recommend, but we should learn that the same empathy for two different persons can indeed lead to different results and both can react totally different. We are never sure how others perceive our feelings and our point of view.


Therefore we cannot set up a general rule how to treat other people or how to effectively communicate with others. We can only give some good advice and useful tips.

 

What we should learn:


WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW OTHER PEOPLE SEE THEIR WORLD!

WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW OTHERS SEE US!

NEVER ASSUME TO KNOW OTHER PEOPLE!

Our world is originally built for specialists – “what’s valued intellectually is specialty knowledge … It’s not enough to be a physicist, one has to be particle physicist or a quantum-loop theorist.”

Good thing you would say – find your personal niche and be this very special person!


The internet allows people to make money from new ideas, from their passion. Finding and occupying the own special niche is the trend!

There are many books for future entrepreneurs who sell you this dream: “It is so easy … find your niche … and success will be yours!” You only have to find your niche …


And people follow the own dream … joyfully and willingly! They say: “People make money from the strangest ideas, I only have to sell this particular dream.”


But times have changed and the internet and our technology is complex. And no one in marketing really knows what they are doing. Insecurities arise and people don’t know where to find solutions. And how will they know – they are specialists in their field, placed to explain you the own field, the own expertise. Their knowledge is reduced to this special field – targeted knowledge. They could explain you everything in their field but not what is false in context, in relation to other fields. A kind of limited thinking, that shows you always where your potential ends and where you cannot follow.

Convincing people is often not so easy. Enchanting people’s hearts and minds is a great challenge, and will always be. No matter what we try to sell – services, products or ideas – we are constantly forced to give our best. Convincing people needs trustworthiness and persuasion. People have to like us and our offer. They have to feel the need to say YES. And it is not about manipulating people to get our way. Creating enchantment in people is about creating an environment of welcome, acceptance, tolerance and understanding. An environment of empathy and care about the other person we try to convince.


We have to overcome old patterns of thinking, old habits of behaviour and old imaginations in order to reach out to others. Entrenched habits will prevent the adoption of new ideas and will hinder each progress in coming to a mutual understanding. Such habits will always be friction points and will nip in the bud each small ray of hope.


By putting ourselves in the mind-set of people we try to enchant, we will better understand how they think, feel and what they expect. It is about finding common ground with others, even when we have to come down to a lower level of understanding to reach a consensus. Showing humility and thoughtfulness for the other person are means to gain likability and respect. Thus we demonstrate that we appreciate the other person in their humanity, as human being, and with their own understanding. Superiority will never help to reach a mutual understanding. Only when people meet from their human perspective, freed of each egoism and urge to self-presentation,

they will detect the soul of the other person. When we want to change the hearts, minds and actions of other people we have to find a way to their soul. The human soul is the essence of all being, of all life, the door to our higher self and the door to a better human understanding. Reaching out to people’s soul creates nearness, creates inner connectedness.

 
SHOW HUMANITY FOR OTHER PEOPLE!


GAIN THEIR SOUL AND THEIR TRUST!


CHANGE THEIR HEARTS AND MINDS!

Man nowadays puts himself in chains. Lacking motivation, rigid consistency, harmful thoughts and prejudices, daily routines. Life is about what it always had been. Conventions and commitments rule our daily life – we don’t dare to break out and think free. Our brain uses the old, obsolete patterns in thinking. We never ask us if everything makes sense and is adequate. Totally trusting we rigidly continue with our old scheme.


Everything around us could develop further – we still insist on our old thinking.


The book “Mindfire – Big ideas for curious minds” of Scott Berkun sees three challenges for mankind that prevent us from a life of a free thinker:


  • The First Challenge: Be wrong. It’s ok.
  • The Second Challenge: Other people
  • The Third Challenge: Be alone

 

Let’s see what these challenges are:


The first challenge: Be wrong. It’s ok.

The first challenge for us is to realize that we are so often wrong in what we think and believe. We should not pride ourselves on rigid consistency. We should rather put faith in our ability to learn and to develop ourselves further. Nobody decides in the end if old traditions are valid anymore or not.


The second challenge: Other people

The second challenge is not to rely only on these people who share our ideas and thoughts and stand behind us. Sharing our ideas only with these people would mean sharpening our prejudices. Prejudices against those who don’t agree with our opinion and who think differently. Just the diversity of different opinions is exciting. It gives us the chance to compare different attitudes and to learn from them. “Freedom grows best in diversity” says Scott Berkun.


The third challenge: Be alone

The third challenge for mankind is to be free from others, to be alone. Having time for the own thoughts and reflections. Hearing our inner voice what it has to say.

6.) Do I put other people ahead of my personal agenda? 
7.) Do I have an unchanging standard for moral decisions, or do often outer circumstances determine my decisions? 
8.) Do I make difficult decisions, even when they have a personal cost attached to them? 
9.) When I have something to say about people, do I talk to them or do I talk about them? 
10.) Am I accountable to at least one other person for what I think, say and do?

A great problem in business is that people lack the necessary business ethics. They proclaim integrity and authenticity and demand it from others. But at the same time, ironically, studies indicate that the majority of people don’t always act with this integrity they request from others.

+John Maxwell says in the preface of his book “Ethics 101“:

“There’s no such thing as business ethics – there’s only ethics.
People try to use one set of ethics for their professional life, another for their spiritual life, and still another at home with their family. That gets them into trouble. Ethics is ethics. If you desire to be ethical, you live it by one standard across the board.”

Everybody has some influence and that indicates the depth of their leadership. But then, why is it that some leaders can mobilize nations, and others, who have all the wisdom, all the knowledge in the world, have no influence?

Why do patterns matter?

In order to become great Leaders one should always ask questions if something is not clear. Like the saying goes the only dumb question is the one not asked.
